LATEST NEWS:

Hey, have you heard? The second special seat was taken.

#1 – Srsly?

#2 – What? Is that true?

#3 – Impossible. So far there are 14 candidates, and none of them made it past the entrance.

#4 – No, it’s not a candidate.

#5 – Then who is it?

#6 – Stop asking. Read the school announcement.

#7 – Can someone post it here? Too lazy to find it.

#8 – No need to thank me.

Dear all, due to some family issues, the special student, Lucifer Nightwalker von Nightmare, finally enrolled to our academy today. Do welcome him by giving your best applause.

#9 – WHATTTTTTT!??

#10 – That ghost student!?

#11 – Not anymore.

#12 – FXXKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

#13 – Why the hell does he get to be with Kuroyuki!?

#14 – Hey, doesn’t that means… we can challenge him in a duel?

#15 – A duel? How?

#16 – Don’t we have a scoreboard to overcome first?

#18 – As far as I know, those rules doesn’t apply to the first challenge.

#18 – Ahhhhh right. It’s been so long I’ve forgot about this rule.

#19 – Me too.

#20 – Speaking of which, anyone have any news about that new guy?

#21 – What news?

#22 – Like, his enrolment results and sorts. He needs to pass that, right?

#23 – I saw Kuroyuki’s homeroom teacher entering the Student council.

#24 – What!? Mrs Luna?! Is she there to evaluate him personally just like Kuroyuki?!

#25 – I just confirmed from one of the teachers. That guy… he entered the room barehanded.

#26 – Barehanded? Are you serious???

#27 – No fxxking way.

#28 – How is this even possible?

#29 – I’ve never heard anyone entering that room barehanded and make it out alive.

#30 – He must be cheating!

#31 – That seems possible. It’s already June now. I’m surprised that the school still haven’t withdraw his name.

#32 – You mean, he’s buying his results with money?

#33 – Most probably.

#34 – That’s unfair?!

#35 – I don’t care. I’m going to challenge him to a duel.

#36 – Chill down, mate. We don’t know anything about this guy yet.

#37 – You do know we had a bunch of monsters this year, right?

#38 – Let’s say if I win by accident. Like, he let down his guard or something. Doesn’t this means I get to spend at least three months with Kuroyuki?

#39 – Da heck, man. ARE YOU A FXXKING GENIUS!?

#40 – I can’t believe I saw this. Thank you, o wise one.

#41 – Now I know what I must do.

#42 – Hold on, is that new guy reading this?

#43 – Crap. Didn’t think of that.

#44 – Come on, guys, use your brain a little. That guy just enrolled today. There’s no way he would know about this secret group.

#45 – There’s no one he could ask for the invitation link.

#46 – Hah. There’s only Kuroyuki he can ask, but as if she knew.

#47 – SHUT THE FXXK UP.

#48 – Dude, why?! You just made me imagine that scene!

#49 – I’m so freaking jealous of him right now.

…………………………………………………………………………………

After reading through the absurd comments on the fan club site, I sighed and closed my screen, letting my eyes rest for a moment. The glow of the screen faded, but the echoes of those obsessive remarks lingered in my mind.

“…Made up your mind?” Kuroyuki’s voice cut through the silence, her tone calm yet insistent.

“……I don’t wanna,” I murmured with a fatigued voice, leaning my head back to stare at the ceiling.

“…Do you really think you had a choice?”

Her words carried the weight of inevitability, and I couldn’t help but groan in response.

“…What’s the point? It’s not like I could beat you,” I uttered with resignation. “Even if I try, they’d still hunt me down like zombies after brains.”

Kuroyuki tilted her head slightly, her lips curling into the faintest smirk.

“…That’s why you will show them that special students are not someone they can beat, even if they let down their guard.”

I sighed deeply, running a hand through my hair.

“…Fine, fine,” I muttered, my tone defeated. “I’ll do it, okay? I’ll duel with you.”

“…You should’ve agreed right from the start,” Kuroyuki said, folding her arms as if she were giving me a lecture.

I shot her an annoyed glance before letting out a huff.

“…Member? No,” she replied matter-of-factly. “I created it.”

“…I beg your pardon?” My head whipped toward her as I stared in disbelief, my mouth slightly agape.

Kuroyuki looked at me innocently, as if her words were the most natural thing in the world.

“…Is it wrong to try and protect myself?”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at her ingenuity. “Heh. No, of course not. Honestly, I think it’s a pretty clever idea. Still, I’ve got to ask you something.”

She narrowed her eyes slightly, curiosity piqued.

“…Why the pause?”

“…Because I hope this is just my imagination.”

Her gaze sharpened.

“…Do speak,” she insisted, her tone tinged with suspicion.

“…Are you the one who posted the latest news and wrote comments twenty-five and thirty-eight?”

Her expression flickered for a moment before settling into mild surprise.

“…………………That was quick,” she murmured.

“So it is you!?”

“…I wasn’t expecting you to notice so quickly,” Kuroyuki admitted, a rare hint of sheepishness creeping into her voice. “I thought you’d figure it out after our duel.”

“…So it really was you. Why?”

Kuroyuki’s gaze didn’t falter as she answered.

“…I want you to tell me your answer first.”

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees.

“If you insist. But first, let me make something clear—this is just my assumption. If I offend you… I hope you’ll correct me.”

“……N.” She nodded slowly.

“…You orchestrated this duel by stirring up the first years to challenge me,” I began. “If I refused, I’d have to deal with their endless challenges—an annoying and exhausting prospect. You left me with only one option: to fight you. One, to instill fear into them, and two, because you wanted to see my strength for yourself.”

“…Three,” Kuroyuki added coolly, “if you last long enough, they’ll stop questioning your rank altogether.”

I blinked at her confidence.

“I don’t know where you found the confidence to think I’d survive,” I said flatly.

“…You already did,” she replied without hesitation. “Even if I was holding back, no one has lasted a minute against me. But you did.”

Her words made my stomach churn.

“I don’t want to fight you!” I protested.

“…Then surely, you can handle a few hundred of them, no?”

Her calm logic made me want to tear my hair out.

“ARGHHHHHH!!!!!!!” I screamed, clutching my head like a madman.

Kuroyuki remained unfazed.

“…It’s pointless, Lucifer,” she murmured. “What is supposed to happen, happens. Even if I hadn’t incited them, dealing with them is a matter of time. I simply made it happen faster.”

“…Somehow, that line makes you sound like a villain trying to destroy the world.”

“…I was one,” Kuroyuki said flatly, her tone chilling. “At least, I was made to be one. Can you imagine how many times I’ve been confessed to?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess—a hundred?”

“…You’re missing a zero.”

My jaw dropped. “Seriously?”

“…I’ve had enough of rejecting people. Even my heart has a limit,” she said coldly.

I chuckled awkwardly. “Haha, doesn’t that mean you’re charismatic?”

Her icy glare pierced through me, silencing my laughter.

“…It’s not funny.”

“...Sorry.”

She sighed, her expression softening just slightly.

“…If you were in their position, what would you say?”

Her sudden question caught me off guard. My mind raced, but no matter how I thought about it, I was trapped. Her gaze bore into me, expectant yet unreadable.

“…You’re really asking me to confess to you, aren’t you?”

Her lips curved into the faintest smirk.

“…Consider it punishment for annoying me.”

Somehow, I had the distinct feeling that answering her question would lead to my demise.

…Then again, not answering it might be just as fatal.

Caught between the proverbial rock and hard place, I decided to go with the honest truth.

“…Kuroyuki, when I first saw you, I thought you were very pretty,” I began cautiously, keeping my eyes on her expression. “But then, after seeing how you beat up five people in a flash and nearly killed me, I thought… well, that you were a little violent.”

Her eyebrows raised slightly, and she blinked, seemingly caught off guard.

“……Did I offend you?” Kuroyuki murmured, her voice softer than usual, her expression dumbfounded.

“Saying no would be a lie,” I replied candidly. “But after sitting down and talking with you, I realized you’re really smart and brave. And… well, that’s about it.”

Kuroyuki tilted her head slightly, her eyes narrowing in a mix of confusion and expectation.

“…Did I miss something?” she murmured. “Where are the rest?”

“Nope. You never said this had to be a confession of love,” I replied with a shrug.

Her expression shifted into something unreadable, though the faintest blush crept across her cheeks.

“…And here I thought I might consider,” she murmured, almost inaudibly.

“Huh? You would?” My surprise was unguarded.

“…Because you look really similar to someone I knew,” she admitted, her tone laced with a subtle, lingering melancholy.

“Ah, no wonder.” I nodded knowingly. “So you’re a maiden in love.”

Her eyes immediately sharpened, a glare capable of freezing time itself.

“…D-Did I say something wrong?” I stammered, forcing a wry smile as I instinctively leaned back.

“…It’s precisely because you didn’t say anything wrong that it annoys me,” she muttered coldly.

“Ah, so that means…” I began, feigning a moment of enlightenment, “…I look pretty similar to your childhood friend.”

Her glare intensified, her lips pressing into a thin line.

“……Another word, and you’re dead,” she uttered icily.

I raised my hands in silent surrender.

Seeing my retreat, Kuroyuki exhaled a short sigh and looked away, as if to compose herself.

“…Now I understand why the principal recommended you right from the start,” she murmured. “You’re too attentive, Lucifer Nightwalker von Nightmare.”

Her tone held a warning, a quiet note of caution that felt heavy with hidden meaning.

“…At this rate, you’ll meddle in someone else’s matters before you even realize it.”

Someone else’s matters.

Her words hung in the air, unspoken but crystal clear— Stay out of it. Don’t pry into what doesn’t concern you. Don’t pry into me.

“…Don’t you think it’s already too late for that?” I said with a wry smile.

“…I guess so.” She murmured.

She broke eye contact, her gaze drifting as if lost in memory.

“…Eight years ago, I made a promise with him,” she murmured, her voice softening with nostalgia. “He said he would marry me if I found something better than him.”

“…Something better than him?” I echoed.

“…Hard to imagine, isn’t it?” she replied with a faint, bitter smile. “But he was just that good. The most talented person I’d ever seen.”

“Even more talented than you?” I asked, genuinely curious. “But you’re practically a celebrity here. Even your paintings…”

Her eyes widened slightly.

“…You even noticed that?” she said, clearly surprised.

“…Although the paintings had different styles, I didn’t miss that signature. Especially that one you left out to dry,” I added.

“…You never cease to surprise me,” she murmured, shaking her head slightly.

“…Is he the reason you came here?” I asked hesitantly.

“…No,” she said softly, her voice trembling ever so slightly. “…I lost contact with him.”

The sight of her tears swelling nearly broke my heart. It was as if she was holding back a flood of emotions, trying to maintain her composure.

In a desperate attempt to distract her, I blurted out, “Y-You know, if he saw how pretty and talented you’ve become, I bet he’d be absolutely stunned.”

Her teary eyes turned toward me, her expression softening into something almost childlike.

“…Really?” she asked innocently.

“At least, that’s what I think,” I replied, offering a reassuring smile.

A moment of awkward silence settled between us before it was shattered by the sound of the digital bell.

“…So, it’s time,” Kuroyuki murmured, her usual composure returning. “…Are you prepared?”

The weight of her words pressed down on me.

…I see.

There was no escaping my fate.

Little did I know, however, that what I said to Kuroyuki during that moment would ultimately hurt her the most.
