Chapter 41: Goblin training

The meatballs with pasta were divine as were all of Pata's dishes.

I somehow manage to drag myself to my bed before being transferred into a dungeon. Thankfully the transfer relieves me of any excess food I've eaten by converting it into energy.

<So, as per your request, you are in a forest type dungeon that is mainly populated by goblins. These types of dungeons are tedious to clear and take ages to grow so they rarely get attacked.>

Why is that?

<Every dungeon floor is a forest with the passage to the next floor hidden inside. Most monsters here aren't worth a lot and worthwhile plants or other natural resources only appear on higher floors. In return each floor takes is a sort of separate dimension which makes it costly for the dungeon to expand.>

So this is like a real forest but at the edge of the forest, the dungeon just ends? I pull up the dungeon map and there are indeed walls all around the forest. There are also plenty of green dots representing the monsters of this floor. The forest is pretty big and there must be at least a thousand green dots in total.

Not that I need a lot of them, I'm just here to train some goblins. Goblins often walk in groups so I approach the nearest group of green dots on the map.

They are goblins, four of them sitting on the ground resting. They notice me approaching and grow alert but after seeing I'm a goblin too they settle down again.

"Hey, guys."

They turn to me looking annoyed.

"What wants?"

Right, seems I forgot that they are stupid. It usually wasn't a problem since they understood simple things like to follow and fight. But how am I supposed to tell them that I want to train them?

I can see that they are getting more annoyed as my silence lasts. If I don't say something soon they might ignore me. Here goes nothing.

"Need training, grow strong, kill more enemies! Me show how get strong!"

"Strong? Kill enemies?!!!"

They take the bait and immediately become eager. Are all goblins this stupid?

<Goblins yes, their intellect is comparable to a child. Once they evolve they usually gain a boost in their mental capacity unless they evolve into something like a goblin barbarian that inhibits intellectual growth.>

Ah, I see. So there is no hope for improvement unless I look for more evolved species.

<Don't even think of trying to train a hobgoblin. They aren't going to listen to someone weaker than them so you'd have to evolve first.>

Anyway. Back to the goblins that are looking at me with enthusiasm. I pick up some branches that are more or less straight and have a good length and circumference. I hand one to each of them and take one for myself.

"Do as I do."

I know that this command is probably too much for them but during the last mission, I discovered that they learn best by emulating what I did. Therefore I grab my branch with both hands and start to whack the air in front of me.

I've seen swordsmen do this on TV and call it training so surely this will help the goblins improve right? Maybe I should ask Edward for a better way to train.

<If it's a simple swing you are after then doing this is good training. Though you should make sure each strike holds a good amount of strength. If you just swing the branch using momentum you'll get nowhere.>

Looks like Navi is a pro when it comes to these things too. I keep swinging the branch but try put strength into each individual swing. The goblins are trying to copy me but their overblown enthusiasm leaves no room for proper form. They swing their branches like their lives depend on it using their body's full range of motion to increase the swing's momentum. Their faces are filled with joy as they let out their will to destroy and kill.

Since they are giving it their all without holding back they quickly exhaust themselves. Two of them give up immediately after and throw away their branches. The other two look at me trying to make out why I'm not exhausted yet. Not much time has passed so I'm still swinging my branch pausing slightly after every swing to make sure I don't rely on momentum.

The two goblins look a little confused but once again try to imitate my movements. Since they are paying closer attention now they get it right and despite still being exhausted they do practice swings.

After half an hour I take a break of ten minutes before resuming. During my second interval of slashing the air with a branch, another group of goblins comes by. They look questioningly at what we are doing until one of the goblins that is currently swinging calls out to them.

"Get strong! Kill enemies!"

They are all pea brains but somehow they understand what the goblin means. They all find a branch of their own and join us. Like before most of them quickly lose interest but some keep going.

I repeatedly rest and keep swinging and by the end around twenty goblins have joined me in my branch swinging. Another fifty goblins are sitting close by either watching us or just staring off into space.

Navi informs me that it's time to return and go home. I stop swinging my branch and place it against a tree.

"Me go, return tomorrow."

Navi extracts me from the dungeon and I wake up in my room at VR-dungeons. I look at my status and see that I've made some progress.
