Chapter 16: Supply

School has long since ended for the day, the sounds of birds chirping and the autumn wind blowing through the trees greet the sounds of elementary school kids playing and screaming in the nearby park during my walk. The fragility of life crosses my mind as I see a dead golden-brown leaf blow past my face. A frown lands on my sullen face as this thought crosses my mind but it is soon replaced by a neutral look as the serene atmosphere from before once again returns.

Before I could even gather my thoughts, I reached the front of my house. A car parked out front notifies me of my mother's brief return from the hospital. I make my way to the front door swiftly throwing it open and stepping through I notice my mother sitting on the couch but find it unnecessary to say much about my day so I just greet her and head upstairs. I didn't really have much of a goal apart from looking through the new entry on the main menu.

I click the now illuminated and decoded training tab and to no one's surprise, a couple of drop-down lists appear in front of me. The first list is labeled 'exercises' and the second is labeled 'Memory.' I open the first of the drop-down lists and a bunch of exercises are shown to me. The only ones available are labeled: Pushups, Sit-ups, and Jogging. The three most basic of exercises, I was never that athletic, on a good day I could do 15 pushups but that was the max, I am sure that if I trained, I could easily do 100 but that's only hypothetical.

It's a better time than ever, I guess. Selecting pushups another menu was shown in front of me confirming my payment. I could feel something click inside my brain and various feelings began to go through my body wave after wave. I decided to test out my new found body and could notice various side effects, for one I could feel ease in lifting my body as if many unnecessary movements were removed. I decided just to go with it and did the first version of pushups that came to my mind.

As I began to do one pushup after another, I began to approach my previous limit, it didn't feel like a limit but more like a goal by this point. As I pushed past this limit, I began to feel my blood pumping faster and I began to pour sweat despite this. I couldn't feel discomfort, it felt good to push past this limit of mine so I kept going. Soon my shirt became so soaked that it began to stick to my body so I briefly stopped and threw it off my body. After resuming I began to restart my count, by this point it neared 50, I could feel my body wringing out every last bit of stamina it had yet that stamina felt infinite.

An eternity seemed to pass but I finally reached 100 pushups, a goal I never thought I would reach today. I noticed a couple of things while tirelessly doing pushups, my arms did not move an inch from where I placed them on the very first pushup, my back was perfectly straight and held its form with each rep, and lastly, I could feel each desired muscle group being worked out with precision. I reached my upper limit around 150 as I could feel my joints being overworked, the constant and unfamiliar strain on them has caused them to begin to give out. I can feel if I don't stop now then I won't be able to do a single push up ever again.

I decided it would be best to take a break from pushups and sat myself up. I could feel my blood flow return to a normal pattern as I stood up and felt invigorated. Despite how much I wanted to revel in this feeling I could feel my sweat sticking to my body and the discomfort that came with it truly beginning to set in fast. Leaving my room, I rushed into the bathroom, and hastily took a shower in an attempt to rid myself of such a gross feeling as quickly as possible.

Once I had my shower, I threw on some clothes and sat down at my computer again. Each exercise cost me 250 dollars and I had around 4250 at this point so I purchased the other 2 exercises and navigated over to the memory tab. Just like the exercise tab, I found 3 illuminated options all with a price tag of 500 dollars. The 'memories' I could purchase were labeled: Step discipline, Rifle discipline, and Pistol discipline.

The weapon disciplines were easy to discern the use of but the very last one sparked my interest so I spent the necessary 500 dollars on Step discipline. The familiar prompt came up confirming my purchase. After closing the window, I began to feel a warmth flow through my body. All of my muscles seemed to relax at once as I stared at the ceiling unable to gather the strength to raise my head.

---------------------------------------

After a few moments, the feeling began to lose intensity but I couldn't tell if I was just getting used to it or if it was truly fading, regardless I could feel a persistent comfort in each of my limbs primarily in my legs but evenly spread through the rest of my body. I am assuming that it is related to my steps. I stood up and once again felt an immediate change. Firstly, I could stand with very little pain to my healing bullet wound. Secondly, I could stand very quickly if I wished, it felt as if a great weight had been released from my body.

With a smile I began to walk around my room, it felt quite nice to walk around. My weight felt very evenly distributed amongst the various parts of my feet. "I want to test something" thinking out loud I gathered strength in my legs and gracefully hopped into the air. Instinct took over and I landed with very little discomfort. It is quite easy to deduce that the lack of 'discomfort' is attributed to the lack of some casual unnecessary movement and the proper use of muscles.

From a third-person perspective, I'm sure I had only done a fairly normal jump but I could feel my muscles contract in different areas. While I was thinking about the various uses of step discipline, I was thrown from my thoughts by the sound of my mother calling me from the living room. I am not one to keep people waiting so I hurriedly rushed downstairs while deciding my next course of action.

"How was school?" My mother asked me as I sat down at the table to enjoy the freshly prepared food. Between bites, I began to describe my day only leaving out the details of the conversations with my friends. "Well, it's good to have peaceful days." with a remark my mother began to eat her food as well. Dinner finished without much difference so I finished my food quickly in order to get back on the topic of the shop. Before I went upstairs my mother let me know that she would be taking another night shift at the hospital so I bid her farewell and went upstairs.

I sat down at my computer and reopened the terminal. I quickly navigated to the 'memories' section of the training section and purchased both disciplines at once. While getting used to the feeling of the two disciplines being added I nearly fell asleep it was truly quite a pleasant experience. After a moment I was able to sit up and since I have no way to really test the two new disciplines I decided to look back to the screen and assess the shop's current wares. I decided very quickly that I should purchase more .45 caliber bullets as I had used quite a few in the last mission.

With a couple of clicks, I easily purchased the ammunition and gazed at the shop a bit more. Since I had extra money I checked the shop for more useful equipment. While looking around I bought a rifle grade ballistics vest and took a look at a few of the rifles that had unlocked after the last mission. The vest took a large chunk out of my money so all I could do was look at some price tags and make goals for numbers that I should try and hit in the future.
