Chapter 81: Whispers

Grabbing a fishing pole, I pulled out a raw fish from my inventory, quickly pulled out its entrails, and chummed the water. Baiting my hook with the rest of the fish, I stuck the pole in the sand and waited.

As it could take hours to catch something worth cooking, I joined the rest of my crew in the beach time activities. Evos, Robin, Ace, and I had to stay on land, so we decided to build a sandcastle.

Though I thought such childish activities were beneath me, it was an excellent chance to practice. Creating ten black holes the size of baseballs, I controlled them to start digging out a pit.

The sand that entered the black hole disappeared, the grains on the event horizon got compressed, turning into a solid stone. I finished my project just when the bell attached to my rod started to ring, meaning something was on the line.

Running over, I opened the clutch letting the line spool out smoothly. When the line wasn't under threat of breaking, I started to reel in the fish. Repeating this cycle over and over again, I could feel the fish had given up.

Giving it one last jerk, the fish soared out of the water and landed at my feet. Jumping on the fish before it could squirm back into the water, I pinned the muscular animal down. It looked like a catfish but with silver scales and two-foot-long whiskers.

Sighing, I took the hook out of its mouth and dragged it back into the water, "Why did you do that? That fish was probably about eighty pounds." Ace had been watching me for the last few minutes as he had yet to get a bite.

"Catfish are bottom feeders, most of the time, they're good to eat, but when they're not, it hits you hard," I said, brushed off the dirt and slime from my hands. "Well, that's a shame because It looks like I have a bite." I watched as Ace wrangled with his catch, and I feared that the metal pole would break from the sheer strain.

"Do you need some help?" I smiled as Ace was dragged across the beach, "No..I..got it!" The last few words came out more as a grunt. Just as the line was about to break, the metal turned pitch black, and Ace pulled hard, yanking the fish out of the water.

Something blocked out the sun for a second, and the ground shook as the giant whale of a fish landed on the beach. "Oh, you go to be kidding me!" Rushing over, I frowned as Ace gloated victoriously. Next to his catch was still very much alive.

"It looks like a win for me. Can you make something that pairs with my drink? I was thinking a nice stew." Before I could respond, Ace disappeared as the fish lunged forward and swallowed him.

Sighing, I retrieved my largest butcher knife and sized up the animal. "Why did you go and make things difficult." After killing the fish, I started the long and laborious process of taking apart the fish at some points, having to use my sword technique to cut through the thick backbone.

Pulling out the guts and moving them far away from the rest of the fish, I located the stomach and started to cut. My nose wrinkled as the contents of the fish's belly spilled out, including one very pissed-off pirate.

"Not a word." Ace scowled as he turned into flames burning off all the bile covering him, "I'm going to take a shower. I still don't feel clean." I watched as my traumatized friend disappeared into the ship and waited for a minute before I burst with laughter.

"I don't even care that I lost anymore!" Recovering from my fit of laughter, I looked at the plethora of meat at my disposal. Twirling my knife, I got to work to make a meal so delicious that even Ace would forget about today's events.

Two hours later, the sky was almost black as I set down the last silver platter, "Okay, dinner is served!!" Before I could blink, my crewmates filled all the seats as I had denied everyone lunch and any snacks before dinner.

"Finally, it's about time, starving." Evos looked between me and the food with eyes full of desperation. Giving the signal, the teenager started to grab anything in his reach. Sitting down myself, I noticed that Ace had a flush to his cheeks and was holding an open keg beneath his arm.

Smirking, I leaned in closer. I whispered to him, "I hope it was worth it." Glaring at me, Ace flipped me off before returning to his meal. Turning back to my meal, I started to eat, enjoying the taste of good food and the company of friends.

Dragon smiled as he looked at the extensive report given to him, "I hope you weren't injured too badly. It was a risky move going after him yourself." Aokiji leaned against the table and sighed.

"Call it what you want, but I got the information you wanted, so what do you think about him?" Aokiji asked while feeling as if he had cheated death somehow. "I think that we can use him. Once you report your little fight, the World Government will pour all their resources into catching Soren, especially if you nudge them in the right way.

Standing, Aokiji started to disintegrate into snowflakes, "I'll do my part make sure you don't underestimate the kid. The younger generation is nothing to mess around with." Dragon didn't reply and waited until Aokiji was gone.

Reaching into his cloak, Dragon pulled out a picture of Luffy, "Soon we'll meet, but until then, I'll watch you from here." Returning to his usual post Dragon stared out on the empty wasteland and realized that the winds were speaking again.

"I wonder whose talking." Closing his eyes Dragon started to listen, as people would never realize how far their words carried.
