Chapter 264: Taking Over
"As I have already said, I am doing this for my family and this town where I grew up in. I would want to request 1 thing for my family and 2 things for the town itself.", said Axel.
"You are truly magnanimous, Mr. Axel.", said the mayor but from the inside he was panicking. He was feeling that the request would not be in his favor.
"As I would not always be with my family and they insist to stay there, I want 10 guards as a bodyguard for my family at all times. Among them, 3 must have elemental rank Pokemons.
They are not compelled to follow my family's every moment but they should be able to protect them."
"That can be arranged.", said the mayor nodding his head.
"Second is for the town itself. For that, I have to ask. How many of the soldiers are equipped with elemental rank Pokemons and among them who are the permanent soldiers and the village guards?"
"Currently, we have 15 soldiers and village guards who have elemental rank Pokemons. Among them, 8 are permanent soldiers and village guards.", reported the mayor.
Village guards were for the city itself. All of them are from the city. Permanent soldiers were those who are stationed here permanently all their lives. Almost all of them are from the city itself. Temporary soldiers are those who were sent here by the league.
"I would like to personally train them in strategy and give them some pointers in their Pokemon training which would be helpful for the tide. This would include all of the permanent soldiers and the village guards.
If the temporary soldiers are interested in the training, they would have to get permission from the league and the league would have to pay them.", said Axel.
The mayor was stupefied with the proposal.
"This… Mr. Axel could be difficult."
"Can you tell me the reason for this difficulty?", asked Axel.
"The soldiers follow a strict hierarchy. I know you are a young prodigy but they would not follow you. You don't have any experience being a soldier. I also know that you are an advanced-rank trainer. Being an advanced-rank trainer at such a young age is commendable. But some of the captains and lieutenants are also advanced-rank trainers. So, it is unlikely that they would follow you.
I think that you would feel embarrassed if they reject you. So I don't think that I can fulfill your request.", said the mayor.
"If those are the only problems, then it is already solved.", replied Axel.
"Huh?? I beg your pardon."
"I have been a zone commander of Burbos town during the tide so I have plenty of experience on the field. Due to my contribution to the tide, the league has given me the position of permanent zone commander.
I also have 4 elemental-rank Pokemons and 1 pseudo-king rank Pokemon. I may not have got the trainer certificate of a higher rank, but I will do so in the near future. So can I assume that my request would be fulfilled?"
"Ahh.. Yes, Mr. Axel. You are quite a prodigy for being in such a high rank in the military at such a young age.", said the mayor while his face showed that he was sweating from his ass.
Mayor was appointed by the league to help the town grow. They were elected from the city itself. Theoretically, the mayor would rule the town till he was 70 yrs old, and then a new election was held for the new mayor.
But practically, the mayor's son or daughter would be the next mayor. The league didn't care about the politics of such a small town. So, in the town, the mayor was like a king.
However now, Axel was taking over the military part of the mayor. He was losing his power and being in the seat for so long, he didn't like losing his authority. He also didn't have a good reason to decline the request cause on paper, Axel was helping the town.
If Axel was a nobody or just a genius of the town, he could have just said no and been more oppressive. But Axel was a genuine successor of the Pokemon master. So, he could not decline the request without any good reason.
"My third request is also for the town. I want to set up a school where children from age 6 to age 13 are given theoretical knowledge about Pokemons and also some practical knowledge.
The children would be charged a minimum amount of fees only to cover up the cost of the school. I want the young generation to grow well unlike ours.", said Axel with a sad face.
The town didn't have any school as of right now. The Pokemon world didn't force children to go to school like on Earth. There were schools but there were in well-developed cities and they cost a lot. They were only for rich kids.
"Mr. Axel, this is…"
"I know your doubts. Fear not, I am fully qualified to teach the students. I have gone to school myself when I was a child and I am a bonified researcher myself. I would be the principal of the school and my friends who are equally qualified would teach them.", said Axel before the mayor could tell anything.
The mayor could not refute any of those things. But if he gave the military and the school authority to Axel, he would just be a puppet mayor of the town. Axel would be the one ruling the town, not him. The best he could say in the future would be 'I am still the mayor of this town.' And after that? Nothing. He would still be controlled by Axel.
"Mr. Axel, while I support the idea for children to be educated, I don't think the family will. Our town has never emphasized children going to school. It would be difficult for thinking of parents to change.", said Adam.
"If that is the only thing worrying you, then you don't have to. That is my problem and I would take care of it. As a successor of Prof. Oak himself, I want my town to be educated.", said Axel.
And that was the nail in the coffin. Saying Oak's name had sealed the deal. Axel was using the authority of Oak right now and the mayor could not back out now.
