Chapter 30: CHAPTER 30: the guards

The night slowly slipped by. No sing of the strange humanoid appeared again. nevertheless I was still warry of his actions. Therefore I helped the others pack everything in the small camp so we could leave as soon as possible.

Without the wounded Gwen we managed to speed up quite a bit. After a few hours I could already cense the village. But I knew that we probably still had a few hours to go.

Even when I knew that as long as people wouldn't stare at me for to long they should be unable to notice that I was a demon, I was still really nervous.

Of course I didn't have the chance to worry for too long when traveling with this group. Alex already bumped into me with his usual hyperactive excitement.

"I heard that they sell the best grilled fish there in the entire land. All of us should definitely go eat something there."

I tilted my head. "We are going to stay there for quite a long time right? Wouldn't it be weird if we didn't eat something there?"

"Yea that's right. Oh you know what? We all should go to one of their winter festivals!"

"But it's still autumn. It would take at least a month for any of those festivals to take place. please calm down." Allenya spoke in a scolding voice.

I chuckled. "You're telling him to calm down. Don't you realise that you are almost as hyperactive as he is?"

"That's not true!" she frowned. Her messy hair was hanging for her angry face before she broke out in laughter. I mockingly raised an eyebrow "Okay maybe it is true." She eventually admitted.

Yohan was watching us joke around with a proud loving smile.

As I predicted it still took a few hour until we reached the village. We stayed several hundred meters away from the gate in the giant wooden wall that was surrounding the village and was protecting its interior. Even if it was made of wood it still looked quite strong and intimidating.

Hidden next to the path I applied my illusion magic and checked if my hood was positioned right. I also pressed my wings as tightly on my back as I could manage.

When I wanted to step on the road Gert reached out to and grabbed my arm.

"Don't let your tail drag over the ground, people will see it pocking out under your cloak!"

I nodded. "Thanks I will keep it in mind."

And so we headed to the village. Two guards stopped us when we neared the gates. They were wearing tough leather armour and carried swords on their hips.

At that moment I could hear my heart bumping so loud that I was certain that the others could hear it to.

I looked ad the ground to prevent the gourds from seeing my eyes. All I could do at this point was hoping that they wouldn't find out.

The biggest guard neared us. He resembled Gert, however he had blond hair and he smelled of alcohol and sweat. His posture was terrible as he was almost completely leaning over.

"What is your business in the dragon lake village?" his voice was rough and demanding. Immediately after speaking he spat on the ground and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

Allenya stepped forward with her arms crossed. She was nearly a head smaller than this man even when he was leaning forward, and her standing so determined in front of him made an iconic sight.

"We are traveling through and planning to stay here for the winter!"

The other guard. A skinny jet tall young man with messy brown hair stepped forward. "Please excuse the rudeness of my brother. We simply don't advise you to stay for long."

Now that he mentioned it, they did smell very alike. Before I barely noticed due to the sent of sweat that was coming from the more muscular one.

"And why is that?" Allenya placed her hand on her hips and leaned forward for a bit. She stared the guard dead in the eye.

"Well… there are a few cases of people going missing in this village for the las month or so."

Allenya smirked. "I'm pretty sure something like that wouldn't happen to us."

"Have it your way but be warned."

She rolled her eyes an walked trough the gate. We could only follow her.

When we passed through the gate I saw the lake. The village was literally build on the lake. The roads consisted of bridges and where there weren't boats were floating on the exposed water. All the houses were standing on pillars so they hovered above the water.

I accelerated my pass to catch up on Allenya.

"Hey Allenya, we should really hire a room in an inn or something. I don't know for how much longer I can hold on."

She gasped. "Oh I'm sorry Gustave. You really must be struggling right now."

"I think I can bare a few more minutes. But better safe than sorry."

She nodded. "Gustave and I will go ahead to look for an inn!" Then we started running to where we thought would be an inn.
