John held onto the slick iron talons of his Eagle golem. He was thankful for the bird as he glided down to the ground safely. When he landed he rubbed the birds head before it took off into the sky again. He looked around the courtyard and saw Roswald laying on the ground.
"Roswald," he yelled out as he ran to him. Roswald grunted as he tried to stand but it was clear he was going nowhere by himself. John took his shoulder, "I'm sorry, If I had reacted sooner I could have warned you." His spectacles were cracked and he threw them off, "It would have made little difference, I'm afraid."
Roswald looked at him, "No one could have predicted your brother would have showed up. To think he has gone so far as to betray the king, even after the family was pardoned." John lifted him up, "He still believes in what father talked about during his mad ramblings. Come, we have to move."
He got on his feet and Roswald growled through his teeth, "It will take awhile, but I believe I will heal." As John limped away with Roswald over his shoulder he heard a metallic crash. His brother's golem had jumped down from the castle. "That thing is powerful, no doubt about that." It began walking towards them, it's feet sending metallic toons into the air.
The eagle screeched as it crashed into the back of the human golem and knocked it to the ground. John sped up, "Keep him occupied!" Seemingly answering his order it took off into the air and dived into his enemy and thrashed with all it's might. The human golem swung his arms and swatted the beast away, but the bird was relentless in its defence of it's master.
John could still hear the metallic clashing as the two golems fought. When he had made it as far as his legs could take him he heard a single crash and heard his companion cry out for a last time. He breathed heavily as he propped Roswald against a tree, "Young master, leave me, regroupe with the others." John shook his head, "No way, I'm not leaving you here. I can lead that thing away."
Roswald held his leg, "Your brother is a powerful mage. Are you sure you're ready to take him on." John could hear the faint footsteps of the heavy golem walking towards them, "I can do it?" He was about to take off wene Roswald grabbed his arm, "Remember our lessons, it's not power that wins a fight."
John nodded, "It's brains!" Roswald let go and propped his head against the tree, "Go get him." John ran off and saw the golem step into his path. He took out a large iron ball and began signing. This time he added more powerful movements and abrupt stops focusing on power.
He threw the ball to the ground and it bagan transforming into something big. It grew a large and fat body with muscular legs and arms with great talons on the end. It's head was huge and ugly and it had a mouth full of sharp metal fangs. It was one of his most powerful creations, the Ogre.
It beat it's chest with great metal arms and roared at the challenger. It lumbard towards it's enemy and swung it's massive clawed hand hitting it in the side. They were both equal in height, but he hoped that the ogre's brute size could make up for the golem's power. It thrashed it's hands and it was everything for the human golem to block the onslaught of the Ogre's claws.
You could hear them slice into the metal man, he was doing some damage. The golem caught his ogre's arm and twisted it with so much force it forced him down. The ogre roared in pain and John could see cracks appear on it's massive arm. With one swift motion the man twisted the arm off his golem and it sent chunks of metal flying and the Ogre to the ground with a great bang.
The man dropped the arm and turned to John. He fumbled through his pack for another iron ball and began signing again. He didn't have enough time to conjure something up before the man was close enough to reach him. He closed his eyes awaiting the cold hand, but felt nothing. Opening his eyes he could see the Orge had not fallen yet.
It's last remaining limb had latched on to the leg of the metal man and with a grunt slung it into a tree with a great crash. The Ogre looked at him and in the light of a nearby lantern could see a smile in it's snaggle-toothed mouth.
"Bravo, little Brother," said John's older sibling as he walked onto the path. The ogre turned and growled at him. "Who could have thought you could be capable of such a creation," his golem raised up with a single crack down it's chest, "But mine is much more powerful."
The metal man walked to the Ogre and lifted it's leg up. It growled in defiance before it's head shattered into bits of metal from a massive kick. John winced as he saw it, despite being chunks of metal he took the time to create their own personalities. John looked at the stupid grin on his brother face and felt a deep anger towards him.
But that didn't help nor solve his problem, the golem was already looking at him. "John," Roswald called out from behind the tree, "That thing has no emotion, feels no pain or loyalty. That is where your strength lies, use it." John looked at the old man, how could he beat that thing.
"...Always a bother, first you runoff with him, then you turn him against me." His brother pointed at Roswald and the golem began walking towards him. John had no way of beating him, he was going to fail. Then he saw the expression on Roswalds face.
It was not pain, or fear that marked him. It was a simple and rare smile. John shook his head, he couldn't fail here. He had to warn Alex, he had to protect the king, Roswald. He had a goal, and he was going to reach it. All that stood in his way was that towering meatal bastard.
He took out two of his last iron balls and began signing, but he was going to try something different. He used both hands in synchronised practice despite the balls in each hand. They flowed around his fingers as he began to conduct his magic. It was a complicated spell, but he was sure it was going to work, it had too.
He focused on fluid movements with savage and abrupt stops, and inside he could picture the form. He moved his fingers and arms faster than he had before as the spell took it's effect. His brother couldn't help but watch. Roswald smiled, "Hah, to think you could master double signing in such a short time." His brother growled, "Stop him!"
Roswald stood between them, "Like I'd let you ruin my master's work." The golem tried to hit him but Roswald was smarter from his first experience. He dodged it and punched the thing in the leg. A loud twang could be heard as it swung again, and despite his injuries could easily avoid the blind swings.
The spell was near completion when the balls began to heat up in his hands. Roswald moved a little too fast as his leg gave out and the golem backhanded him into the tree. John opened his eyes and threw the balls to the ground and a bright light flashed in the courtyard. The two balls began spinning around each other and then melted into a pool of molten metal.
For a moment John thought he had failed but was quickly reassured. A giant taloned paw reached out of the pool and then another reached out and clawed the ground. Then the head of a great dog with red eyes peeked out of the puddle followed by another. They growled and snarled wildly as the huge body of the two headed dog pawed out of the puddle. The last thing to exit was a tail with a spiked maze at the end.
It growled as it sized up his new chew toy. John laughed, he didn't even know he could do something like this. His brother backed up with a worried look on his face that was quickly covered by an angry smile, "A third rate magic is still trash. Tear those heads off!" The golem stepped towards the hound and both heads reeled their heads and howled to the moon.
It was blood chilling, something straight out of a nightmare. The two headed hound jumped around and swung its savadge tail. It hit the golem directly in the left leg breaking it off. It turned and took each shoulder with their mouths and snarled as the metal screeched against itself. The golem tried to fight back but their paws had pinned down its arms.
The left head thrashed violently and took off the golems arm at the shoulder. It growled and took it's head in it's massive jaws and began to chew and rip. A moment later and the dog ripped it right off the body. The metal man, no more than a used up chew toy fell to the ground.
John's brother gasped at his defeat as his eye went wild, "NO, I can't lose to your third rate tricks. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT to EVEN TOUCH ME." He threw out a ball and an eagle shaped creature exploded into the air. It flew around and picked him up by the arms, "It doesn't matter, the King will still die. All I did was distract you."
John's brother spat at him, "This isn't the last you see of me, Brother." He flew off into the night and John stood next to the head of his golem. His hound walked up to him and licked him with its metallic tongue and he rubbed both it's heads, "Good boys."
Roswald grunted from the tree, "Hah, showed that little good for nothing." John ran up, "Roswald, are you-" Roswald snickered, "I'll be fine, if anything I'm proud. That was, ugh, a brilliant showing." John smiled, "I couldn't have done it without you." He smiled, "You sell me too high. Come, we must find the others."
John looked at the castle, "I hope we're not too late."
