Chapter 21: Traitors, Part Five

He was sitting in total darkness. He sat at a table in a leather chair and sitting on the table was a chess board with unmoved pieces. Sitting across from him was the man in black. He took a sip out of a cup and laid it on the table, but the cup wasn't holding tea but something red. "Welcome to my humble prison."

Alex was suspicious of the man, he didn't like the grin he had. "Who are you?" He moved one of the pawns, "Do you like chess, I haven't played in awhile, but I used to love it." "I don't like playing chess, never a fan." The man nodded, "I know. How about this, for every move I will answer one question." Alex couldn't tell where he was, nor how to get out so he moved a pawn of his own.

"My name is Pain, an oracal of sorts. I have resided over your soul since it's beginning." He moved a knight, "Always the daring one, scared me a couple times too. Not all wounds can be healed." Alex looked at him, "What do you mean?" He motioned to the bored and Alex begrudgingly moved another pawn.

"Your father told you your inborn magical gifts were the reason for your instant healing, but that was a lie. I am the thing that heals you, that stitches your wounds over and over again. It's a daunting task," he laughed. Alex didn't question his father lying to him, but he didn't know what to think about this man healing him.

He moved a bishop, "What are you." His smile widened, "Now, that's a good question. I am something ancient. In your tongue someone may call me a demon." Alex's eyes narrowed, "Demons eat the souls of the living, there evil." He captured one of Alex's pawns off the board, "Come now, you make me sound darker than what I truly am. DIdn't I save your little girlfriend's life."

He found that sentence to be dripping with sarcasm, "Why did you save her, and why hide all this time?" He smiled, "Your father locked me up inside you, and only under a strict criteria would I be able to be freed." Alex moved a rook and captured the man's knight, "Explain?"

"Three requirements needed to be met. The near death of you, the near death of a member of the royalty, and a more complicated one. You would have to accept my power, that was his last failsafe. I guess he expected you to be stronger, or smarter." He laughed, "As for the princess, we need her."

Alex gripped the table, "You plan on using her." "No, no, you see there are a few more of us. Demons I mean, you will need her to collect us." Alex looked at him as he moved his queen to the bored, "You see, we are lost, sealed away. Our former power diminished to make way for the next ruling power, you humans."

He captured Alex's knight, "These squabbling, powerless things who think the word is theirs. That is true for the time being." Alex looked up, "What do you mean?" The man then captured Alex's King, "It seems we're out of time. You are needed somewhere else, the gods are not yet done playing with you."

The pieces began to float back to their position as light broke through the black abyss they were sitting in, "What do you mean, what are you talking about?" Alex recoiled as his eye began burning, the man stood up from the table and picked up Alex's King. "Use that power well."

He sat up and looked around, but the man in black was nowhere. Instead he found himself lying in the silk covers of Jasmins bed. He breathed in as he realized Rose was no longer in the bed. He saved her. He got up and found himself to move a little quicker than usual, and found some scars missing from his arms.

He walked up to one of Jasmine's mirrors and began inspecting himself. He was wearing the same clothing, but it was his face that surprised him. He looked more like his father now, sporting his narrower eyes and sharp jaw, even his lighter brown hair had darkened. But the most distinct change was his left eye.

It shined red in the mirror, and he realized he could now see through it. He touched the side of his eye and noticed the scars of his face had faded. He checked his chest and found the same, his scars were lighter, but he could still see them. He walked closer to the mirror and looked in it when it suddenly shattered where his left eye had reflected off it.

This was the power Pain had given him, but he still didn't know what it did other than shatter mirrors. He then felt the round object his grandfather had given him in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw his reflection in the gem, "Thanks grandfather." It then cracked and he jumped. He cursed thinking he had cracked it like he had the mirror but then felt it wobble in his hand.

It began to burn in his hand and he laid it on the bed and watched as it cracked more, he wasn't doing this. Then a small claw stuck out of it and scraped the side of the jewel. He got down on a knee as he sat mesmerised at what he saw. Alex knew one thing for sure, this was no chicken. He saw a blue snout poke out, but it was having trouble so Alex moved what he now knew was the shell.

A blue and scaly creature crawled out of the egg. It looked at Alex with big green eyes before raising its head and squeaking into the air. It was small and nearly comical, but looked mighty nonetheless. It looked like a blue lizard, but he didn't know of a lizard that was born from jewels. He rubbed it's small head as it curled up in his hand. "How did you get stuck down there."

Alex looked at the little creature, "How about this." Alex found his Jacket and slid the lizard into one of his front pockets. It looked annoyed to be let go, but snuggled up in his pocket. He would have to find some food or something for it later.

Someone walked in behind him and Alex turned to see Rose. She was holding a plate of food and dropped it when she saw him. Alex smiled awkwardly, "I see your back on your feet, that's good." She ran at him and wrapped her arms around his neck.

This threw Alex off as he just stood there with his arms down to his side, "Alex, thank the gods you're awake, oh you fool. You big, stupid, idiotic, dog. You good for nothing oaf." He could feel tears run down his neck. Alex smiled and just wrapped her up, "Sorry for making you worry."
