Chapter 37: 37. Weird & Getting Weirder

Aiden whips into the driveway so fast the cars make a tiny screech. The car engine whines down to an idle, then stops suddenly, and all the noise around me dies.

A whisper sounds in my head again, but it fades with the rumble of the car engine and I can't make it out before it's gone. But it makes me ache.

"Can you walk okay?" Aiden's voice is quiet. Tense. He's staring at the house, not at me.

I nod. "Thanks for . . . what happened tonight?"

He makes a weird huffing sound and shrugs. "Nothing. People just got a little . . . excited. It was fine. I took you out because it was time to go."

He's lying.

I can't meet his eyes. My hands tremble and my stomach feels strange. But I open the door and stand, thumping my feet on the ground. I am solid. With every breath I'm less foggy. I need to think this through. Can't try to talk to him about it now because I still can't think.
