Chapter 3: Chapter Three

Graduation Day. The day when students can finally let go of being children and face the world as if they are really prepared for it. The day when they are tasked to make decisions on their own even if they barely have an idea what they want to do with their lives.

Just like the rest of these children, Ellie still haven't decided what she wants. "Baby, you haven't filled out this part yet" her mom asks her as they ate breakfast. Ellie immediately gets the paper as if she knows what to write. But in reality, she left it blank on purpose.

Lesle then gets an idea. She points Iris' as if giving her idea to Ellie's mom. Iris' head turns to one of Ellie's paintings. She supported Ellie's hobbies and would hang some of her paintings around the house. "Baby, why don't you pursue painting?"

Ellie loves her mom more than anyone in this world. All she wanted to do is make her mom proud and happy. And after her mom suggested it, it feels as if the light bulb in her head was turned on. Ellie smiles, why didn't she think of that?

Without responding to her mom, she gets the pen in her pocket and started writing the course she's going to take. Lesle smiles, now Ellie is on her way to become a world-renowned painter.

All humans are meant to do something in their lives. It can be to share their knowledge, passion, and skills. Each one designed to make a difference and all of this is possible if God's plan is followed. But since humans have their free will, there can be instances when the path is not followed. This is where the guardian angels come in.

The third and final stage is to go back to Earth and be a guardian angel in training. All those who passed the second stage will be divided into groups and will be assigned to high-ranking guardian angel and their human.

"Do you think we'll make it?" Isabelle asks as she and Sky waited for the results. Sky sighs and lays on the grass. "Of course we will. We aced the second stage." But the truth is, Sky is nervous. It is one of those moments when you like something so much that even if you know you can get it, you still have doubts on yourself.

Sky knows he did a great job in both stages. But a part of him knew that maybe the head just doesn't think he's up for it.

Ellie never painted in front of a group of people. She usually paints alone in her room or in their basement and would show her family her masterpiece after. But today is different. One of the college classes required her to paint, together with her classmates, a view that gave so much meaning for them.

A part of her is excited because this is the first time she did this kind of activity. College life seems to be okay for her even if she barely meets Theo nowadays. She did earn new friends: Emma and Charlotte. They have been nice to Ellie since the orientation day and Ellie feels comfortable to be around them.

However, another part of her is nervous or maybe anxious. Since Ellie started college, she knew that each person a unique talent when it comes to arts, especially in painting. Sometimes Ellie feels like her skills were not good enough as compared to them. But like her mom would always say, "you are there to hone your skills, not to compare yourself to them."

Her mom would remind her that every now and then, encouraging Ellie to do her best in everything she does.

Waiting is not something Sky is good at. Since heaven does not have a sense of time, he doesn't know how long he's been waiting for the result. He watched as the room full of angels become less and less as the head announced the results.

Each time a name is called, Sky hoped it was him. He would anticipate the head to enter the room and be disappointed each time his name was not called. He lost his patience when Isabelle and the quiet angel were both called at the same time.

"Why don't you just call all those who passed at once?" He complained, making everyone turn to him. Isabelle looks surprised too. The head sighs, "Sky, right? Everything happens for a reason. We call those who passed based on their group and availability on Earth. A guardian angel will have to guide their human as long as the human lives. If your patience is this short, then I don't think you have what it takes."

Ever since he came to heaven, this is the first time Sky felt he made a mistake.

---

Mistakes help people learn. If everything goes well in one's life, will one ever strive? If humans get what they want, will they dream of having something they don't have? The head told Lesle that Ellie will make mistakes in her life. Mistakes that even Lesle cannot prevent.

Humans are generally curious. They want to experience everything as early as they are young. They want to feel things and get things as soon as possible. Ellie was not like that when she was a kid. But now, she wants to have what her friends want: a romantic relationship.

Emma has been with her boyfriend for 4 years. They met during high school and they were inseparable even in college. While Charlotte has a girlfriend for 3 months. Ellie was never exposed to all of those. No guy ever confessed to her in high school or she never liked anybody before. But in college, it feels like everyone is dating, except her.

"There are a lot of ways for you to get a guy. You're beautiful" Emma says as she gets Ellie's phone. Charlotte nods in agreement, "or you can get a girl" Emma rolls her eyes. "Our baby girl is straight. I'm sure" Charlotte laughs, "what's so bad with being lesbians?"

Ellie just watched as the two girls debate. She doesn't care though. She never really thought about if she prefers guys or girls or even both. Somehow, it feels weird that she never liked anybody when her friends already have crushes when they were in grade school.

"Nothing's wrong with that, honey." Charlotte says as she brushes Ellie's hair. Ellie, even when she's in college, didn't change much of how she looks like in high school. She still wears crop tops and tight jeans. She has this high ponytail that gives everyone a better view of her face.

"Here. I already uploaded your profile. All you need to do is swipe right if you like what see and swipe left if you don't." Emma says and hands Ellie her phone. Ellie looks at what Emma told her. It's an application where you can meet strangers nearby and date. Both girls believed that this is the fastest way Ellie can meet the guy, or girl according to Charlotte, of her dreams.

What Ellie didn't know is that she just made her first mistake.

After the encounter with the head, Sky waited more than before. It feels as if the head decided to test his patience as he is the only angel in the room. It feels like forever when the door finally opened. Sky looks up to see the head with a folder in his hand.

"You can just ask another angel to tell me the bad news. It's obvious since I'm the only one whose left." He says as the angel approached him. The head smirks and hands Sky the folder. "What makes you think you failed?" Sky sighs and looks down.

"You told me I don't have what it takes, remember?" Before Eli can answer, he sits beside Sky. The younger angel refused to get the folder, thinking it's the bad news. "Just get the folder, Sky"

Sky followed what he was told and saw that the folder contains information about a human. Ellie Yu he read the name on his head. He turns to the head, "what?" Eli pats Sky's right shoulder. Sky looks confused and nervous. "I wanted to teach you one last lesson before you go back to Earth. It's patience. Looking after a human being will take years. There will be times when nothing is going on, especially when your human reaches the old age. Things will be slower and might even be boring. But that's the beauty of life. You start to appreciate every little thing."

Sky's confused face changes to relief. He looks back to the folder. Ellie Yu, currently a college student. Future renowned painter. As if Eli read Sky's thoughts, he said, "You'll be a guardian angel in training with two other angels. We will send you to Earth once Lesle is ready. If you pass the last test, you'll graduate and become a guardian angel."

Sky smiles. "Thank you" Eli nods. He then stands up and leaves the angel whose smile is so wide it can brighten the empty room.

---

Humans have their own guardian angels. Some have one while others have three. Usually, guardian angels meet when their humans become friends or they are in a relationship. Since guardian angels are always there for their human, it is no longer a surprise when they join dates as well.

It's been 2 weeks since Ellie started using the app Emma and Charlotte gave her. In that 2 weeks, she was able to match a bunch of guys but only one asked her on a date. Since it's Ellie's first date, she really doesn't know what to do.

"Are you sure this is what you want?" her mom asks as she watched Ellie look at herself in the mirror. "Mom. It's not like I'm getting married. I'm just going to a date." Her mom sighs, with someone you barely know.

She walks to her daughter and fixes the dress. Ellie hates wearing dresses which is why Iris is extra nervous. She knows that her only daughter is finally crushing on someone and it scares her. Ellie turns to her mom. "Chill. I'll text you" she then gets her bag and heads to the door. "Bye, love you!" Before Iris can respond, her daughter is already out of the room.

Ellie is excited and nervous and afraid and happy. These emotions are what pushed her to go to this date anyway. She and Lance matched perfectly. They are both into arts and dogs. In fact, Lance encouraged her to join this upcoming competition. After those sleepless nights of chatting and calling, he finally decided to ask her out.

They decided to meet in a salad bar. Ellie recently has taken interest in eating salad and Lance just so happens to know the perfect place. They decided to meet after school but Ellie decided to change her clothes first since she believes that first impressions are important.

"You are totally crushing on this guy!" Theo says after hearing the news. Even if they are both busy, they still find time to call each other every once in a while, that is whenever Theo doesn't have a man in his condominium. He started living alone to be more independent and Ellie finds that cool.

Ellie takes a deep breath after she hops of the cab. There aren't too many people inside and she wonders if she is too early. She is about to get her phone when someone taps her. "Hi, Ellie?" Her nervousness grew but also her smile. She can't believe this is happening.
