They walked through the stone-paved street. Whenever they passed, the people who were either weaving clothes or engaged in other tasks paused and bowed deeply to the King's bearer. Zane frowned, particularly as he could no longer ignore the dilapidated buildings and the children whose ribs were visible through their clothes.

Before he could raise his cousin, Daniel Windwalker, the archer who had been silent for a while suddenly announced, "They are not wearing any shoes, and their clothes are too threadbare."

"Neither of them are engaged in any chore related to food," Mary said, and Zane observed again.
