Chapter 17: Eva!

"Aaaa!"

Grant's face turned sorrowful upon hearing the scream. He looked back at the house that they had just passed with concerned eyes. Ivan and Naina also turned and looked in the direction of the big house.

An orange light could be seen shining through the window; someone inside must have lit a torch or a candle after hearing the scream.

"Who was that?" Naina asked. From the crying sound, they guessed it was that of a small girl.

"It's a small girl, Eva. She is the nine-year-old daughter of the village chief. Until last week, everything was good, but suddenly she became ill, and her health is worsening by each day. We don't know what illness she had caught, no matter what we gave her, she would not get any better."

"Daddy!!!!" The girl named Eva cried again.

"You guys, please wait, I have to go inside to look at her condition." Grant looked extremely worried. He hurriedly walked to the front gate of the house and knocked on the door. A woman opened it after a minute. Her eyes were already red from crying all day after seeing her daughter wailing in pain.

"Grant, Eva is again crying. The medicine to make her sleep is not working anymore. What should I do?" The middle-aged woman had wrinkles and dark circles under her eyes.

"Sarah, keep yourself together. The village chief should come back by tomorrow morning. He will bring healing medicine and cure Eva's illness. She will get better by tomorrow."

Village Chief had gone to the White Tiger City to buy a healing medicine powder from the Alchemist shop. It was used in treating many common and rare diseases that ordinary humans caught from time to time.

It was the only hope for her to live. But the healing medicine powder that they wanted was expensive for ordinary people. If not for all the villagers contributing a few copper coins each, the village chief might not be able to afford it from the Alchemist shop.

Ivan and Naina walked nearer to Grant and the woman who Grant referred to as Sarah.

'What's a healing medicine powder?' Ivan asked since Grant and Sarah were talking about it. The name implied the meaning, but it didn't hurt to double-check from the system.

<< Healing Medicine Powder is the remaining part of the Healing potion that is left at the bottom of the cauldron in which it is made. Because of having too many impurities, this residual from the mixing of herbs is left at the bottom, but it is not thrown out since it has weak healing properties. Instead, it is dried and used to treat common diseases such as colds, fever, diarrhea, etc. The host is recommended to use a Healing potion since Healing medicine powder has too many impurities.>>

"You are...?" Sarah looked over to the two unknown people she had never seen in the Village.

"Sarah, they are travelers who wanted to a safe place to spend the night," Grant explained.

Thud!

Suddenly a sound came of something falling inside the house. Sarah didn't care for Ivan and Naina at all; she immediately ran inside the house, "Eva!"

Grant also followed behind her. Naina looked at Ivan and also followed behind them to check what was going on with the little girl. She was a light mage, after all. She could try to treat the girl with her spell.

Ivan wasn't going to wait outside. He also followed behind them.

The girl was in another room inside the house. When Ivan arrived, he saw that Sarah was crying over her daughter's head and calling her name repeatedly.

"Eva, Eva, my sweet child, please wake up. You can't leave your mother alone. Please, please wake up, Eva."

Eva had stopped breathing when Sarah came and found her on the ground.

Grant was also trying his best to bring Eva from the death door somehow.

Naina rushed to Eva and placed her hand over the little girl's chest.

"Lumo Curatio~!"

Naina's hand suddenly shone in bright golden light. She pushed the light elements in Eva's body in the hope of helping the little girl breathe again.

'Light Magician!!" Grant and Sarah said almost at the same time. Their faces lit up in hope, especially Sarah, the mother of the little girl.

But the healing spell did not seem to be working at all; it did not seem to improve Eva's situation at all.

Chime!

Side Quest:

1. Save the little girl Eva.

Time limit: 3 minutes

Mission Difficulty: C

Reward: ??

>>

Before the system notification had even opened, Ivan had already rushed beside the little girl.

He was going to try saving her even if the specific task had not been generated.

Seeing the side mission and the time limit, Ivan was relieved because it meant they could still save the girl.

"Move aside! Quick!" Ivan said hurriedly.

Ivan almost pushed Naina back to go near Eva. Anyway, her spell wasn't working, so he can't let her waste time.

In the surprised eyes of Sarah, Grant, and Naina, Ivan placed his two palms crossed over each other on top of Eva's chest.

Ivan wanted to try giving CPR to Eva and see if it could bring her to breathe again.

Putting force in his hand and pushing his palms down in rapid but periodic movement to compress Eva's chest.

"1...2....3...4...."

Ivan did the chest compression for thirty counts, and then he closes Eva's little nose before placing his mouth on hers to pump oxygen in her lungs.

Ivan kneeled on the bed, and all he wanted to do was to deliver the CPR as correctly as he could.

"Naina, do what I did just now and pump air into her mouth. Hold her nose. Do it quickly. We don't have much time," Ivan almost yelled when he saw Naina looking at him dumbly, the same as Sarah and Grant.

Naina did as she was told. She inhaled deeply and then did the artificial respiration that she did not know.

Ivan looked at the side mission and saw that only 1 minute and fifty seconds were left.

"Please, Please, Please, make it work," Ivan mumbled to himself, his head forehead was wet with perspiration.

Even though the time was slowly ticking, he never stopped moving his hands. After every thirty counts, he would tell Naina to pump ar in Eva's mouth. Seeing his desperation, Sarah and Grant couldn't bring themselves to stop him.

"Huan!" Suddenly, Eva opened her eyes. Her breath returned back as she started inhaling air herself rapidly.

"Eva!" Sarah jumped with joy upon seeing her daughter waking up. She rushed to hold her hands. Naina and Grant were also happy. Especially, Naina, she did not think that following Ivan's simple but out-of-the-box methods could bring the little girl back from the dead.

The timer on the side mission stopped, but the task remained pending. Seeing this caused Ivan's face to turn black.

"Naina, use your healing spell once again on her." Ivan once again shouted, and then he raised his hands.

A transparent bottle suddenly appeared on top of his palm. The bottle was small, the size of his palm, and inside of it, Ivan and everyone else could it filled with a viscous red liquid.

"Healing Potion!"
