When I get in the truck both the dogs squeeze their heads in between the two front seats to get attention. Not wanting to disappoint my new godchildren, I scratch both of their chins and tell them what good dogs they are. Once he gets in the car and starts it, music automatically starts playing but he shuts it off.
"Any chance you can be DJ today and I can finally hear that music of yours while I drive?"
"Sure. Anything you're in the mood for?
"Surprise me."
I decide to manually pick songs and start off with "Peace of Mind" by Boston. Soon we're driving down the Pacific Coast Highway listening to an eclectic mix of music that somehow works. While singing along, I look over and see a slight smile on Will's face.
"What is this? This Ice King can smile without being asked?
"I'm not smiling."
"Yes, you are."
"I don't smile."
"I guess you don't know. You see, when those two corners of your lips point up and your eyes crinkle, that's smiling."
"That was not a smile."
"Then what was it?"
"A grimace."
"Save it for my mother when you're trying to convince her that we're not a couple."
"She thinks we're dating?" He asks in shock.
"She thinks that instead of getting a job, I snuck out to see my non existent boyfriend. Your job is to convince her that you're really my boss."
"You seem to have forgotten something."
"What's that?"
"I'm an award winning actor. If I can do improv, I think I can handle your mother."
"If you handle my mother without upsetting her I'll give you an award."
"I'll just settle for one of those milkshakes since a certain someone stole mine last night. Wouldn't you know it they also stole a few kisses from me as well."
"I did not steal any kisses from you! Even if I did, they were indirect and you did it first when you stole my milkshake first!"
"But Astra, I never said your name."
"It's what you didn't say!"
Deciding to send a message through my next song, I play "Lies" by Will Jay. He starts laughing at me. That jerk. Feeling sulky, I decide to just ignore him and look out the window. Watching the blue waters meet with the white sands, I'm astounded by the beauty of it all. That's two things we didn't have in Texas: blue waters or white beaches. Even so, I still miss it. Nothing is quite the same as springtime with all the bluebonnets in bloom. Or picking fresh pecans to make pie with. We continue to sit in comfortable silence while I continue to pick out songs. Before we know it we're back at the agency to pick up my car.
"Ok, I texted you my address in case you get lost and you know what my car looks like."
"Yes, and I'll be following you. Don't worry."
"Thank you so much for doing this, Will. It really means a lot."
"It's no problem really."
"Will, is that you?"
Both of our heads snapping in the direction of that annoyingly sultry voice we see Cassiopeia. Oh no. I immediately duck down as low as I can so she can't see me.
"What are you doing, Astra?"
"I don't want her to see us together. These windows are tinted enough to where she can't see me right?"
"No she can't see you and does it even matter? You're my assistant."
"Not for another day I'm not, I start Monday remember? If she sees us together she's going to think we spent the night together and technically she will be right. She cannot see us together until at least monday!"
"Will, hello?" She says while tapping on the window.
"Let me see if I can get rid of her."
He looks cold as he rolls down the window. I think I now know where he got the name Ice King. I feel a chill just looking at him.
"What do you want Cassiopeia?"
"I just want to talk. What have you been up to?" She says as she leans against the window.
"Don't touch my truck."
"Ok that's fine. Look, I miss you. I really want to work things out with you. What can I do to make it up to you?"
"Staying out of my life would be a good way to do that."
"I'll do anything. We can get back together and you can have a free pass to sleep with someone else."
"I don't need a free pass to sleep with someone else when I can do that now."
"Like that slutty little assistant of yours."
The nerve of this girl. What's her problem? She doesn't even know me? What right does she have to say something like that about me?
"I suggest you leave my assistant out of this one, Cassiopiea."
"Why? Did she seduce you already? I'm telling you she's bad news. People like her don't belong in our world."
As she's saying this Blitzen decides to jump over the armrest and start licking my face. I whisper for him to stop but he doesn't listen. Why now of all times do you have to do this?
"What was that?"
"Nothing, and just to clarify she didn't seduce me at all. She's not that kind of girl but even if she was it's none of your business. I'm a single man and she's a beautiful girl. If I want to sleep with her, I will because I'm a single man. Because that's how you do it when you want to sleep with other people while you're in a relationship, Cassiopeia. You break up with your partner then sleep with someone else."
Right in this moment Donner decides she wants to get attention too and jumps over the armrest almost knocking over Blitzen to get her share of the attention.
"Who's with you Will?"
"No one."
"Is she with you right now? I knew it, get out of my way."
"No."
She grabs the handle and starts opening the door. I cringe just thinking what's going to happen when she finds me.
"Cassiopeia, wait-"
The songs that they listen to on the drive are "Peace of Mind" by Boston and "Lies" by Will Jay. Feel free to listen to them to add to the experience of the chapter.
