Chapter 5: Thursday

I wake up in the hospital, my mom asleep in a chair beside me. I take the oxygen thing off my face and sit up.

My mom jolts awake. "You're finally awake, thank God!" She hugs me tightly.

"Mom, I can't breathe."

She releases me. "Sorry, I was really worried about you. When you didn't call me again, I came out here looking for you." She sits down in her chair.

"But I called you last night." I say, confused.

She clears her throat and holds her chin. "Sweetheart, you've been asleep for almost a week."

I'm shocked. "What?"

"The doctor said that it's most likely a psychological thing. They managed to get all the glass out of your legs though. But you'll need physical therapy."

I hold my hand up, gesturing for her to stop. "I don't care about that. I have to find the parents."

"Whose parents?"

"The parents of the missing kids, they deserve to know what happened to their children."

She stays silent for a while, and then a nurse comes into the room.

"Ah, you're awake. I'll go tell the doctor immediately."

After she leaves the room my mother stands. "I'll be right back. The phone is right there for you if you're hungry, the nurses are also on stand by for you."

Of course, treat the famous person extra special so their hospital looks good. "Okay, see you soon."

The doctors ask their questions and do their examinations.

I order some food since I'm starving. As I'm eating some jello for dessert my mother comes back with an officer.

"Sweety, this detective would like to speak to you about what happened."

I sit up straight. "Mom, you'll need to leave the room. Go get something to eat, amd relax."

She nods and leaves.

I gesture for the detective to sit down. "What do you want to know?"

He crosses his legs and takes out his notepad. "My name is Detective Harper, I've been trying to crack this case for years. I want to know everything you know."

"Well, one, you'll need a bigger notepad and two, it doesn't matter how long you've been on this case. It's been haunting me since I was a little girl. So, let me tell you a story, about murder."

Maybe one day I'll go back, but for now I'll let the cards fall where they may.
