Chapter 4: To be or not?

Staring at his arm Baethor couldn't understand what he had to do next. 'How do I even begin my training?' He thought to himself before leaning back in the steel chair and staring at the ceiling once more. His feet pushing his weight backwards, hinging the chair on it's back legs.

'I can't move unless I have a direction... If I don't understand what I want to achieve it doesn't matter how I use my Mana cause it will just be a waste...' The burden of time weighing on him. It took him approximately 4 hours to read the book and finish absorbing all the Mana in the last page.

'Being A wizard would be cool, but what kind of mage would I want to be?'

Asking questions to himself would never be fruitful. He understood this much about his own mindset. The questions would just lead to more, yet despite his personal insight, the train had started.

'Fire, would be nice but way too cliche. Actually.. any element would be..' His lips curled inward into his mouth, and he began to gently gnaw on them out of habit the further his thoughts traveled.

'Gravity? It doesn't feel personal enough...' He lifted his left hand upward into the air and stared at the markings etched between his palm. The small lines and their connections.

'What.... Do I want to become?'

Everything in his mind became numb. No thoughts. No sound. Not even the sound of his heartbeat could be heard.. This question had always been a brick wall. A brick wall so strong that even death couldn't penetrate.

"This is getting nowhere.." He rose to his feet and looked around the prison cell. "How can I even train if this place is so small? I wish it was lar--"

The walls began to expand outward rapidly and gave him ample room to move. The sight of which sent him into a small shock before he clicked his teeth in realization..

"The Coyote did say it was a mental space... Is everything control by my mind here?" He looked around the room and small changes started to occur in his surroundings everywhere his eyes touched.

The dingy grey color of the walls slowly began to fall and crumble. As the broken concrete fell and tumbled into nothingness a beautiful cherry colored ray of light took it's place. Soft emerald blades broke through the tiled floors. Soon the entire floor became a huge luscious carpet of grass for him to step on. The final touch, was a beautiful sunset painting his world with colors of indigo, orange, and reds. His whole room transformed into a beautiful hillside with a permanent sun that lingered right above the horizon.

Only the room had changed. The desk and bed stayed perfectly still, the toilet as well. He only changed his environment and everything became so much brighter.

'This... Feels right..' He was loving the look. Everything felt freeing.

A thought. Well, not a much of a thought. A feeling. Something small, a spark but much more soft, crawled it's way into his brain. It was gentle, and spread warmth through his arms and legs.

'I want... Freedom..' So he walked. Feeling how every blade of grass tickled the bottom of his feet he could only smile. 'I missed this feeling..' Small emotions of when he was alive flickered in his heart. 'This chance to live again... might not be so bad..'

"SPEED!" He yelled out loudly. The realization struck him hard. Speed is what he wanted.

'If I run fast enough, I can dodge anything, I can outrun anyone, I can be anywhere and do anything without anyone saying anything to me! It might be cliche but...It's what I want!'

'But how?' He turned himself mentally inward towards his own body. Sensing the flow of Mana that thrummed as softly as his heart. It felt both foreign, and apart of himself. Almost like a t.v. connection that was filled with fuzz but could still make out the image.

'Can the Mana be used to reinforce my muscles? And if so which ones do I utilize?' He pondered only for a second before a clone of himself appeared before him.

'This mental world can be used like this? This is amazing!'

His eyes went along every detail of his body. He wasn't the most handsome, but he certainly wasn't ugly. Also, death seems to be the best weight loss treatment.

'When I was alive I was close to 250 lbs, but now I am slim and look pretty athletic...' He commented.

"Now Run!" He commanded and the clone ran in circles around him.

He sat down on the spot and tried his best to study which muscles move and which ones didn't. However he couldn't only get a glimpse before his clone disappeared behind him for another lap.

'I wish you would just stand still and run, like a simulation..' The clone must have heard him. Right in front of him the clone began to run in place as if he was on a treadmill.

"Well yeah... Mental world... I should've made him do this from the beginning.." Another thought struck him "Can he remove his skin --"

The clone was now naked, more naked than any human had ever been. The skin evaporated and the muscles and ligaments below jogged at full force. With each step it accurately showed the tendons elongating and pulling, and which muscles flexed when they hit the ground.

Baethor smiled, despite the disgusting appearance. After-all, this wasn't real. It was all in his mind.

"Wait..." Another thought had struck him... "Can I simulate the use of Mana?"
