Chapter 10: Fall apart

Burning rage hissed through her body like a deathly poison, it demanded release in the form of unwanted violence. It was like a volcano erupting; fury sweeping off her like ferocious waves. She felt fear and rage over loosing Angelic. She felt a wrath towards the cruel Roop, she wanted to destroy Roop.

Elizabeth had fallen asleep on the chair next to the Queen's bed after nursing her all day.

Ever tiptoed into the room making sure not to wake Elizabeth and her mother. Ever sat on the side of the bed and placed her palm on her mother's forehead. The Queen's body was burning up. She still smelled of blood and sweat.

"Mum." She whispered.

The Queen weakly opened her eyes and gave a painful smile.

"Mum, promise to stay strong until I come back with the remedy."

"Ev, I'm sorry darling."

"You don't have to be sorry, mum."

"This is my fault, Ev. This is the punishment for my sin."

"Mum." Ever placed her fingers on the Queen's face, comforting her.

"Ev, I have to tell you something but you have to promise me that you'll never let Eli know."

Ever nodded.

"Promise me that what I'm going to tell you now is not going to break our family."

Ever nodded, weakly. Here heart began to pump more blood.

Tears began to flood from the Queen's green eyes. "I'm sorry, Ev." She paused and looked at her beautiful daughter, "I had a child from a common Angel."

Ever stayed stunned, expressionless like a helpless animal. She could not believe the words flowing from her mother's mouth. Questions flooded into her head. How was that possible? How comes they never knew? Was it a prince or a princess?

"Where is she now?" Ever managed to speak, pushing the pain growing in her heart.

"He." The Queen corrected Ever, "I don't know."

Ever's heart began to ache. She always wanted a brother. She stared at her mother not being able to believe her words. How was that possible? How could she not know her child?

Ever broke eye contact from the Queen and looked at Elizabeth who was sleeping on the chair. "How's that possible, you don't know?"

"His name is Paulo." She paused, swallowing the pain and guilt growing inside her, "Paulo Roosevelt."

"What?" The last name echoed inside Ever's head.

Roosevelt.

Roosevelt.

"Which Roosevelt is the father?" Ever screamed lightly, making sure not to wake Elizabeth.

"Jonathan Roosevelt."

"But he's been dead for more than a hundred years."

A tsunami of tears rolled down through the Queen's eyes, "I killed him."

Ever stood from the bed. Her long fingers moved through her grey inked hair. Her heart began to pound. Her mother was a murderer. Her mother murdered Julian's uncle. She backed away from the bed. Her mother killed her best friend's uncle.

"Ev, I'm sorry." The Queen whispered. Her heart was falling apart, "Ev, I'm sorry." She repeated her apology when there was no reply from Ever.

Ever was standing in the middle of the room with a figurative knife in her heart. She took a deep breath and walked out of the room.

She stood like a statue on the shore, her toes buried deep underneath the damp sand. A fringe of lace spread over the beach, wetting Ever's feet. It would be long until night fall. Yet as the daylight dimmed and the night began to seep in – her eyes never left the frantic waves.

The louder the ocean screamed, the more she dreaded the new life she had bargained for. She had asked for freedom but she never realized freedom was so cruel and would cost so much.

Salty tears rolled down her cheeks. Sniffing, she wiped them away, trying to stay strong and not fall apart. There was no time to cry, she told herself. The lingering light was obliterated by the rapidly falling night. The once orange and purple sky transformed into a sheet of jet black, which engulfed the beach. Stars reflected off the cold water.

"Ev." Julian spoke. He was standing behind Ever, watching her.

Ever was silent.

Julian walked closer to Ever and stopped when his shoulders touched hers. She sighed and closed her eyes, tears trickling down her cheek. Julian interlocked his long fingers in between Ever's delicate ones and held them tightly.

"What am I going to do Julian?" Ever murmured, painfully.

Julian stared at the night sky, silently.

"My mum is dying inside the palace. The other four Angels are also struggling with their lives. Many servants died, they served us for so many years but I failed to protect them. I knew this was coming." Ever cried, tears flooding from her beautiful eyes.

Julian looked at Ever and noticed how beautiful she was even when she was crying. He smiled. He had seen Ever grow up from a small mischievous girl into strong, beautiful woman. He was always standing by her side and she was always there for him.

"Julian I'm so sorry about your mother, I'm sorry that she has to be locked in the prison with those monsters."

"Everyone will hate me. People will curse me. They'll tell me that Ever Angel caused destruction to Angelic."

"Julian, what should I do now?"

"Shall I hug you?" He asked, completely ignoring what Ever was saying to him.

She nodded. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer, gently rubbing her arm. Despite the heaviness in her stomach, it fluttered at the feeling of her body pressed against his. She sunk into the warmth of his touch. His big, strong arms seemed very protective when wrapped around Ever. He stroked her long grey inked hair gently.

"Talk to Amota, she'll give you a solution. Then tomorrow call the council and execute your plan against Roop and her army of blood drinkers." He whispered, "Everything will be alright. I'm always here for you."

"Julian." Ever whispered, her arms were wrapped around him. She was enjoying Julian's familiar warmth.

"What is it, Ev?" He asked, stroking her hair.

"Do you hate me?"

Julian lifted Ever's chin so that he could gaze into her beautiful eyes, "Ev, I'll never hate you."

"This is all because of my mother's sin."

"I know, Ev."

"She confessed her sin."

Julian cupped her face, "Did it hurt you?"

She shook her head, "But it will hurt you."

"Why's that?"

Ever took a deep sigh, "She has had a child from a common angel?"

"What?"

"He's a hundred years old."

"That's good news, right? You always wanted to have a brother."

She hugged Julian tightly, "She killed the father of the child."

Julian stared at Ever, horror stricken.

Tears watered through Ever's cheeks, "I'm sorry Julian."

"Hey beautiful, why are you apologizing me?"

"She killed Jonathan Roosevelt."

Julian stared at Ever, shocked, not being able to believe the words that left Ever's lips.

"Julian I'm sorry."

Julian's hands fell from their grip around Ever. He felt a freezing coldness radiating inside him. Memories of Jonathan Roosevelt began to flow through him. Julian shattered into pieces. Ever tried to reach up to kiss his forehead but she failed, he was too tall instead she placed a kiss on his warm chest.

"Ev, where is the child now?"

Ever looked at him desperately, "She doesn't know."

"How could she?" A tear poured through his cheek.

"His name is Paulo."

He moved his fingers through his hair in tension.

"I'm sorry, Jule."

He hugged her and kissed her forehead, "It's okay, Ev. It's not your fault."

Away from the sea was a grove of mangroves providing protection to the huge blue sea. Among the mangroves was the eldest of the Fire children, Cael Angelo Fire. He was watching Ever and Julian hugging each other. He was not jealous. He knew they were best friends. But he felt a strong pain inside his heart, he wanted Ever to be with him in her difficult time, he wanted to be the one to hug and console her. Hot fire was glowing on the palms of both his hands. He heard footsteps behind him but he paid no attention to them. He knew it was his sister.

"Cael," She called him, "What are you doing here?"

She noticed the fire burning on his palms; she saw Ever and Julian on the beach, hugging each other. She too felt a strong pain but she hid it.

"Cael, our mother's condition is terrible." She said.

Cael closed his eye lids and tried to concentrate.

"She can't breathe."

"Let's go." Cael said and walked toward the palace.

Parisa took one last glance at Ever and Julian, who were still hugging each other under the moon light. She sighed with disappointment and followed her brother.

"Ever Angel." Julian spoke, loosening the hug.

"Julian Roosevelt." Ever said, looking into her best friend's eyes.

"Let's go into the palace, youve got a lot to do."

"She's making her army. They will attack Angelic." Amota swam closer to Ever.

"Shall I get into the water?" Ever who was sitting on the bank of the pond asked making Amota give an amused look. Ever pushed herself into the water, she felt coldness ripping off her muscles and bones.

"I asked Cedric to come here," Ever said, sinking into the cold water.

"Commoners are prohibited to see me," Amota said with a stern tone.

"This is an emergency."

After few silent minutes they heard the door of the Amota hall opening. Cedric walked toward the pond, he stared at Amota, his eyes wide open.

"What?" Amota asked, feeling uncomfortable from Cedric's gaze on her.

"You are amazing," Cedric commented.

"Oh, thank you." Amota rolled her eyes and gave a fake smile.

"Tell us everything you found," Ever ordered Cedric.

"The arrows which were shot on the Queen and Angel Earth were poisoned by dark magic," Cedric explained. "My guess is they were poisoned by the wizards of Azera."

"That is impossible, they are our priests." Ever looked confused.

"He's right. Roop is in Azera and my guess is Roop has seduced the wizards and she's taking advantage from it," Amota further explained.

"What about my mother and the other Angels?"

Amota pouted. "They will die unless you destroy Roop."

"Why should we destroy Roop to save our mothers?" Ever asked, looking more confused.

"I can save them if you bring me the flowers of the life tree in Azera but unfortunately because Roop is in Azera you won't be able to get to the life tree unless you destroy her."

"What about the blood drinkers?" Cedric asked.

"They are the disaster. They are immortal. You can only kill them by using silver," Amota said.

"We can't kill them. My mother is one of them and the others are servants and soldiers who have worked with for so many years," Cedric spoke against Amota.

"I'm sorry about your mother, Cedric. But if we don't destroy those blood drinkers more of them will grow among us. Once they bite a commoner and enter their venom into the veins of commoners, they too become blood drinkers. Roop will create her army of blood drinkers against Angels."

"Blood drinkers have attacked Air land and Earth land." Ever informed them.

"See. You must destroy them. We got no time to think who they are and what they did. We have to protect the others." Amota swam closer to Ever. She took hold of Ever's hands, Ever felt something magical in Amota's touch.

"Ever, call the council tomorrow and take over the throne. Divide everyone one into groups and assign them tasks. You must now go and ask Queen Angel to make you the queen so you can make orders, I'll explain Cedric the other stuff to be done."

Ever nodded and got out of the pond. Her pale pink dress was wet with the water. Cedric removed his coat and gave it to Ever.

"Thank you." Ever took it and put it over her shoulders.

"Amota," Ever called Amota. "Do you remember you said this is the result of a sin caused by mother?"

Amota nodded, looking terrified.

"I know the sin. Since when do you know about it?" Ever asked.

"Are you hurt?" Amota questioned Ever instead of answering her question.

"I was but now I'm okay. I will find him and bring him to the Capital," Ever confessed.

"I'm waiting to see him." Amota smiled.

Cedric was staring at Amota and Ever, stunned and curious to know about what they were talking about.

"Who is 'he'?" Cedric asked.

"You'll get to know," she said and walked out of the Amota hall.

* * *

The hospital wing was one of Ever's most hated places in the Capital. She hated the smell of hospital; it always gave her stomach aches. She stopped by the room in which Angel Earth was struggling to live. The door of the room was ajar. Ever sneaked in. Angel Earth had turned pale green. Alexander was wiping the Angel's forehead using a wet cloth.

Ever walked away. She walked passed all the other rooms and stopped at the last room of the corridor. It was where her mother was.

She opened the door and went in.

Elizabeth was not in the room. Ever sighed deeply and walked toward her mother and sat on the bed. Her mother was also turning pale green like Angel Earth. Ever placed her palm on her mother's forehead and Queen Angel opened her grey hued eyes.

"Mum."

"Ev." The Queen's voice was weak and sounded painful.

"Mum, the grand councilor will come. He'll bring the papers regarding the assignment of the throne to me, you need to sign it." She took a sigh, "I'll do everything to protect you and Angelic."

"I'm sorry, Ev." The Queen groaned. "It's my fault."

"It is not your fault to bear a child from a commoner but killing Jonathan Roosevelt is the sin you've committed and I'll never forgive you for what you did."

Those words burned the Queen's heart into ashes.

"I'm sorry, Ev." The Queen apologized.

"You don't need to apologize for that. We're all sinners."

"But I lied to you."

"We all lie."

"Everything is because of me."

"Once everything is done with Roop, I'll find Paulo and Julian will adopt him." The door opened and Elizabeth came in.

"Ev, I haven't seen you since the wedding." She hugged Ever and sat on the armchair.

"I have to go now." She said and walked out of the room.

Elizabeth stared at Ever confused as she walked out of the room

"Did something happen?" Elizabeth asked her mother.

She shook her head and closed her eyes in pain.
