Chapter 9: Are all boys dumb?
Still on my root, the offender of my comfort inches closer awkwardly. "Hello", I tried to say with a smile. The offender said, "Anthony, hi am I". I accidentally giggled and said, " I think you mean, hi, i am Anthony." As he scratched his head nervously and smiled. I told him, "I'm Rose". After hearing my name his face lit up. He just had to tell me, "you have a pretty name, for such a funny looking bald girl. You're so skinny looking too". I don't know what it was about this boy, but he sure knew how to make my blood boil. I snapped at him, "Being rude is not how you make friends Anthony"!
I stood up off the root, straightened my clothes, and dusted the dirt off my butt. As I was about to walk away, Anthony quickly grabbed my wrist. Reflexively I jerked my arms up over my face and flinched as if waiting for somebody to hurt me. Tears started pouring out of my eyes and down my cheeks. Anthony started apologizing like crazy. He obviously realized something serious must have happened to me. He promised he wouldn't grab me, and that he was sorry for picking fun at me. I told him to keep my reaction a secret and that I'll have to leave forever if he told. He simply nodded and said, "I'll see you tomorrow Rose. Don't for get me". I waved goodbye as he ran back in the direction he had come from. Does he really think I could forget him over night?
As I stated walking back to my family, I realized that I may have finally made my first friend. Shaking my head I tried to clear my thoughts. The more I shook, the more thoughts came to me. Emmett greeted me as I came walking back. "I was watching that", he said with a chuckle. "you weirdo", I cried out. Emmett joked, "Are all boys dumb, Rose? or just that one"? He said it loud enough for Lynn to hear. "what about a boy?", Lynn giggled. "Rose was by the river with a boy, and he was so awkward arround her too. Maybe he likes her", Emmett blurted out. I sighed, "This is embarrassing, Emmett. Plus he isn't dumb, he is just rude". Lynn said, "Just be safe Rose". I nodded, and got ready for bed.
All showered, fed, and ready in bed. I was thinking about that boy, I felt like I could get a long with him. Wondering if he'll actually come back to see me tomorrow and take time to get to know me. This friendship may be what I'm missing in my life. As I was mid thought, Lynn turned off our flashlight, hit me playfully with a pillow, covering me up. I giggled and even though I was busy minded, I did as I was supposed to and went to sleep, waiting for what tomorrow brings.
