Te Wharepouri spoke quickly to Ngaiti, who then continued. "Many M?ori believe that Barrett is achieving great status and wealth amongst Pakeha and has benefitted enormously from the land sales, but he has not been honest with either M?ori or Pakeha. He is misleading everyone, including Wakefield. Chief Te Wharepouri believes that Barrett will continue to protect his position with Wakefield and line his pockets. He thinks Barrett"s greed and power will cause many problems for all of us."
Andrew silently agreed with Te Wharepouri, his own observations supported what he"d been told. He indicated for Ngaiti to continue.
"Chief Te Wharepouri asks if you can share with him any information you come across about Barrett, especially if you suspect it"s immoral or illegal. This information will be given to Lieutenant Governor Hobson."
