I stood in the veil, letting its warmth embrace me as my sister just had, doing my best not to run. Because I wanted to run very badly. The fight with her had taken the anger out of me, left me calmer at least, without the franticness I'd felt building inside me since I'd woken up. I only now recognized it was gone, that seeing Gram and Sass, Charlotte and Sage and Danilo and, finally, Meira, had brought all of that anxiety about the future forward.

What future, exactly? Meems was right. I'd done it, saved the Universe. Done what I had to do in order to make sure they all survived another day. And now? Now?

Now what?

Femke. Quaid. The Black Souls. Ethie. All things the magical people in my life could handle on their own. Without giant, imposing, messy power like mine getting in the way. I was a weapon without a war. A soldier no longer needed after the last battle had ended.
