A cherry wand is any wand that is crafted out of wood from a cherry tree. More specifically, a cherry wand is any wand that has a cherry shaft, a cherry handle, or both.
Cherry Trees
Although there are over 50 different species of cherry, wand makers typically only use one of the following two when crafting cherry wands: Wild Cherry (Prunus avium) and Black Cherry (P. serotina):
Wild Cherry (also known as Sweet Cherry) is a fast growing deciduous tree, occasionally reaching a height of up 90 feet. It flowers from April to May with pure white blossoms. Unfortunately, it is not a long-lived species and can begin to rot after 60 years. Native in much of Europe except for the far north, cherry is commonly found in England, Wales, Ireland, and much less often in Scotland. Light-loving, cherry is most frequently found in hedgerows and along the boundaries of woodlands.
