Chapter 15: Part 4 - Shinigami 4 Seasons
"Hey kid, nice to meet you!" The shinigami smiled. "The name's Natsu."
I looked at him again. "Hm? Natsu?"
"Yeah, you deaf or something?"
Color yellow, grass patches on the skin. Yep. This shinigami is an embodiment of Summer, just like the name suggests. "Natsu? Like the season?"
"Yep!" A big smile formed on his face
"So there are other shinigamis with season names?"
"Yep!" He whistled.
Suddenly, three other creatures rushed towards him and stood beside Haru. They all looked the same. Skinny bodies, and has hair that moves around like fire, but differentiated in their skin color, and the kinds of stuff that hangs in their skin. They were slightly taller than me.
"This is Haru."
Haru is a pink shinigami that is decorated with dandelions and small cherry blossom flowers. "Hello!"
"This is Aki."
Aki is a slightly dark orange shinigami that is decorated with dried leaves in different shades of orange and yellow. "Hey!"
"And this is Fuyu."
The last shinigami was very light blue and has roots wrapped around in his wrist and legs.
"Hello guys, uhm, I'm Kazu."
"Hello, Kazu!" They all said at the same time.
"Kazu, before you leave," Thanatos said. I turn around to look at him. "Other than ghosts, have you been seeing other..... creatures.... ever since you can see ghosts?"
"Uhmm, not really," I responded. "I can see ghosts back then when I was in Junior High, but then I started High School, I lost the ability. But now, ever since I discovered this place, it has been reactivated again."
"Hmmm, interesting, interesting..." Thanatos joyfully rummaged through the drawer of the desk. He pulls a red pouch with Japanese text written in it. "Here, take this."
I grabbed the pouch. "What is this?"
"Talismans." He replied.
"EH?! Why do I need these?!"
"Well, you will not only see ghosts, but you will also see creatures known in Japanese mythology and urban legends. Yokai as we call them."
"Eh?! WHAT?!"
"Yep, you heard me right."
Ahh crap. I've read a lot about Japanese mythology, and there was a lot of scary yokai that harm humans, but there are also harmless and friendly ones. I'm definitely not excited to see the harmful ones.
I deeply sighed. "This ability is a curse."
"Oh, come on Kazu!" Thanatos happily placed his hands on my shoulder in a manner that makes it feel like a slap, that it hurts. "Don't think of this as a bad thing. In fact, your life will be less boring now that you have this ability."
"But my life isn't boring in the first place!" I exclaimed. He just laughed. "But hey, thanks. I must go now."
"Since you can see ghosts now, and you don't know how to defend yourself against an evil yokai yet, maybe it's safe if a shinigami walks home with you."
"We work by pairs, so make it two."
"Fine by me," I said.
"Okay then," Thanatos points at two shinigamis. "Haru, Natsu, please escort Kazu safely to his home."
The two of them salutes like a soldier saluting to their General. "You can count on us, Thanatos!"Thanatos smiled.
"I have to go now," I said. "See you tomorrow!"
Thanatos smiled and waved goodbye.
The two shinigamis followed me as I walk out of the building.
