Chapter 35: Page: Prolicide?
Hu Ling woke up early today with unease heart. Since yesterday, she has thought of her daughter who was still in a coma state. The idea of loosing one's love had always gnawed her fragile heart for two years now and she still blamed herself for such tragedy.
Two years ago, her daughter had just turned six. The entire household rejoiced with the occasion in glee. Some prominent elders from other households were even invited to join the event. It was after the dinner that the most devastating episode of her life happened. In her daughter's room, she witnessed her little child cried in pain for hours until she went on a state of coma. Physicians came together with her sister Hong to check on her status and the diagnosis was given. According to her sister, her child had contracted a cold- type illness they never seen before which incapacitated her muscles due to the cold blood that's being pumped by her heart. That week, the Hu household had one less child to participate in the awakening ceremony.
For the two years that have passed, the household had been peaceful and the ominous feeling Hu Ling has been feeling was tolerable. It was just lately that the inauspicious feeling became stronger. Although she tried to investigate what that bad feeling was, it was all for naught. The only thing that she could think of was her daughter's condition which gets worse and worse every day.
Lost in the memories of the past, Hu Ling ended up in front of Long Bai's room. She was appalled by the situation that she ended getting the attention of the person inside. Relieving the awkward position, she decided to give her greetings.
Inside the room, while Long Bai was consolidating his newly found strength, he heard some uneasy footsteps coming from the hallway. At first, he was trying to guess who the person was but a voice came from the outside giving out the identity of the person.
"Come in, miss Ling. What can I do for you you at this early time of the day?" When Long Bai said, "early", it was practically the early morning where the entire area has not been bathed yet with the light of the bright and gigantic morning star. Hu Ling came in with a reserved appearance while looking at the mysterious man in front of him.
"This is your home so no need to be reserved. Come and have a sit."
Hu Ling followed the instruction and sat in front of him. Long Bai on the other hand tried to stay calm for him not to make any possible clues of his identity.
"Sir, how may I call you? You have stayed here already for three days and yet we don't know the name of our saviour. Please grant us yours."
" Hmm, you may address me as Hao then. Is that all the reason why you came here? You looked distressed."
"Master Hao, I would like to take this opportunity to ask about your expertise in medicine and illnesses. I believe that master Hao is jot just an alchemist?"
Hu Ling did not hesitate to ask about it. After all, it may be a good idea to ask about his help just in case.
"I'm not a physician but I still hold some degree of knowledge about certain illnesses. Is the pill you asked me to make related to this?"
To Long Bai, he has the system that can help him in diagnosing people's cultivation level and the like. Maybe he can do it too for illnesses. Although he never tried before, it is something that he may try if an opportunity shows up.
"Master Hao, since you are here to make the pill, let me be honest. I have a daughter who is in a coma for two years and she was diagnosed for a disease that has never been seen before. Since we don't have the capability to fly the vast ocean and reach the main island to look for someone who can find the cure, we can only ask the highest grade alchemists of this city and other cities. We tried for two years but we are running out of time. Would master Hao be willing to grant me another favor? This is my request as a mother and not as the head of the household."
From an outsider's perspective, such behavior might not be convincing unless the person who receives the request knows the feeling of losing someone important. The memories of the old Bai started to well up causing the present one to feel sympathy.
"I understand. Bring me to her and I'll see what I can do."
Hu Ling was overjoyed by the master's response and thank him with a gracious bow. Since it was early that time, no one saw the two entering the chamber of the child in question.
In a colorful bedroom, a petite but pretty girl seems to be sleeping peacefully. Upon close up, she could be described like a child goddess of the moon. Although it was not apparent, Long Bai can still see the faint cold aura emanating from her. It was as if a faint glow was surrounding her. Hu Ling opened the see - through curtain and a pale skinned young girl was fully revealed. Red lips, skin as white as snow, and black hair like the raven, anyone who would witness the scene would be disturbed. It sure was mesmerizing but a person who possesses certain knowledge would tell that something is wrong.
Long Bai who was following behind cleared his throat. "May I check her pulse?"
Hu Ling who was holding her daughter's hand stepped out from the area and invited Bai to do his business. Upon touching the wrist of the child, Bai felt the coldness of the body, discerned the slow pulse rate and detected a faint amount of poison in the blood. However, this was only possible with the system help.

Long Bai was bewildered somehow after learning the presented information. He was invited to create the Freezing Heart pill but giving such pill would just make the child's case even worse. Instead of helping the body expel the poison, the addition of the cold essence makes the body even more fragile since the patient is still young. Unless she has cultivated essence to control its effects, the body would become brittle and difficult to move. This made Ling Bai want to investigate.
"Say, miss Ling, who told you that the Freezing heart pill is the necessary pill for your daughter?"
"Master Hao, it was my sister." Hu Ling immediately replied .
"I see..How about the people who can freely come and go as they wish?"
Hu Ling paused for a while before answering. It was unusual to hear such questions. She stared at the mysterious master and before she could give a reply, she received the words that made her feel extreme bliss.
"Miss Lin, here. This is the pill you asked me to create. This is the pill you called Northern Fairy's pill, but in my case, this is called the Freezing Heart pill."
Little by little, every step she took to reach the palm that was showing the very goal of her life feels like she had reached the ending point of the race. She slowly took the pill and held it like it was a baby. The delicate hands felt the cold essence coming from it but before she could rejoice more, she heard the words that shook her very soul.
"But miss Lin, if you give that to your daughter in her condition, she will certainly die. The cold is not the problem, it is poison. A two years worth of it."
Hu Ling shivered by the words she heard. She looked at the pill again and still cannot believe him. She have waited for so long just to hear that she almost killed her daughter? 'This is impossible.' Those were her thoughts.
"No that's impossib....." But before she continued her objections, she remembered the questions the man in front of her asked a moment ago.
"The physician... unsuspected.. two years ago.. this.. Was it my sister? But why? She was so kind to me.. it can't be..."
Hu Ling's legs gave out and she wept a river of tears. Recalling the past, starting when she was chosen as the future leader of the household, the failed assassination attempts, and the event two years ago.
The emotions she felt today were so much to bear, it was like being a silent brook that journeyed so short then became a rocky stream that's being battered in rocks after. Long Bai who was watching just then sensed something coming from the outside.
