Chapter 6: Strategies

We walked in a formatted line as we walked back to the gates. We had a good hunt today, like most days, I didn't have to do anything. After a hunt I always have a leftover thrill. I love having a duty, a purpose, but sometimes I wish I could run from my responsibilities and start over. But then I remember my heritage, and how important my job is.

I long for the days we aren't needed. The days we live life the same way people on Earth do, and we don't have to worry about the next invasion.

After the hunt I always take a shower. I've fallen into a tight schedule, pretty much doing the same thing everyday. I quickly shrugged off my gear, loosening my hair from its braid. My hair was very long, going past my waistline. We never care about vanity here, and so it just saves time not cutting hair, and worrying about how we look. Most still do though, my mother always taught me it doesn't matter what you look like, as long as you follow the rules, and do your job. I've kind of stuck with that since she told me. I believe she would be proud of me.

I got out of the shower and pulled a fresh pair of gear on. I started to brush out my hair, it normally took an hour or a half before I was done with my hair. Just as I pulled the elastic around the end my braid, and fixed my bangs, a loud sound rang out.

The alarm.

I raced into the hallway, to the end of the of it. A punched in a code into the wall, and unlocked it. Opening it, I started shoving weapons to others as they started to gather. Nobody said a word, just followed obediently. It was controlled, even though we knew what it was for. I closed the case, and pressed the button labeled for emergencies. It sent a second signal to anyone in the woods to be cautious.

I ran through the house, to the front door. IT had been left agar for an easy way to get out of the house. I started for the concrete walkways, falling into the pattern of the other dragoness. We stood for minutes, twenty maybe. All pointing our guns to the large wall door at the front.

Then, it flung open.

The sounds of gunfire rang out, and one by one, millions of creatures and anything else fell in waves. It was still controlled, everyone in the pattern of reloading at the same times when the waves fell, and the next came forward.

The creatures always used the same ways, and the same outcomes always came from it.

It didn't take long before the attempted raid was over, and the ogres started dumping the bodies. The fairies liked to decompose the bodies, but it took too long.

And the schedule continues. We cleaned, and restocked, turning off alarms. It was dark now, and normally when I went to bed.

I crawled under the sheets, resting my head on the pillow and letting my mind wander. Wander to a place where we didn't have to protect, where we just lived, and loved.
