Chapter 6: 5 | the unexpected beginning

Almost to the end. Here we go.

Closing my eyes, I let myself go as my fingers hit the notes, playing the song I have practiced and practiced and have it etched onto me. Smiling more to myself as I hear the melody coming to an end and did a twist before taking my hands off the piano.

Taking a moment to breathe, I nod and stood up from the bench as the crowd gave me a standing ovation. Giving out a polite smile, I bowed thrice and walked away from the stage glad and relieved to have finally performed.

At the end of the performance, I find my parents and Rebecca waiting for me with a bouquet of flowers in their hands. "Thank you for coming mom, dad. And Rebecca. Means a lot to me." My dad smiled and ruffled my hair, my mother wiping in her tears with her napkin.

Rebecca grinned. "Of course. I'm pretty sure you were the best one out of all of them!" She exclaimed, waving her arms about bringing attention to ourselves. Shaking my head I politely decline (more so out of respect for the other hard-working pianists) and patted her head. She was a good 6 feet shorter than me, standing at just 5′3. She only swatted my hand away, giving me a glare as she hated when the obvious was pointed out. Like her height.

Which only made me do it again. And she would swat it again. "Enough you giant!" Rebecca whispered harshly pushing my hands away from her face.

My parents only laughed at our interaction. "Honey, we have to get going soon for the ride home. That was such a beautiful performance. Do the two of you have plans after? We can all stop by for lunch before your mother and I get going. My treat." My father asked.

Rebecca and I perked up at the idea of a free meal and found ourselves nodding heads and grinning like a Cheshire cat.

"That was such a great meal. Thanks for the meal dad." I moaned as I swallowed the last piece of my cheesecake.

"What she said." Rebecca managed to utter before stuffing her face with her favorite dessert, creme brulee.

My father just waved his hands sheepishly before giving the waiter his card. A pang of momentary guilt hits me as I realized how expensive this all may have cost. As if catching my thoughts, he mentioned that he had gotten a raise from his employer recently.

"So what are your plans for the rest of the night?" My mother asked, attempting to change the topic. She hated talking about our financial status in front of other people who aren't family.

I gave her a shrug and made eye contact with Rebecca. She gave me a wink and told my parents that we were apparently watching a band perform tonight. "I didn't agree to that." I state while crossing my arms.

Rolling her eyes, she waved her fork at me. "But you're gonna say yes anyway." Staring at her down, I realize she was right so clenching my jaw I took her last slice of dessert before stuffing it in my mouth. A mistake. Rebecca will not live this down and will rant my ears off on the importance of food.

I didn't hear the end of it all the way home.

We arrived a little earlier than planned in order to get the table with a clear view of the stage for a party of four. "Four? Who else is coming?" I asked Rebecca as we pushed our way from the crowds to get ourselves a table. Since it was only 10 in the evening, there weren't too many people around.

"Uh Sebastian and an old childhood friend of ours. His name's John." Rebecca answered distantly as her eyes flitted towards the crowd to find us a table. Noticing an empty table, I grabbed her wrist and rushed her to it before setting her down and taking a seat for myself.

"John? I've never heard of this guy." I continued asking after the waiter took our orders down without asking for our IDs.

"Well he's kind of reclusive. The three of us grew up together but John studied abroad for a couple of semesters in high school and I guess we kind of grew apart. I think Seb and him still hang out though." Rebecca shrugged and smiled when our drinks arrived. Squinting our eyes at her I reminded her to stay low seeing as she was still underage. "Anyways, Seb just texted me and they'll probably arrive in a couple of minutes. Let me go freshen up."

I asked her if she needed company to the ladies' room but she only waved me off and told me to guard the table and watch out for Sebastian and his company.

Checking my phone, I noticed that there were a couple of emails about assignments reminders from my professors. Groaning, I stuffed my phone into the pocket of my dress before zipping it up. Forever thankful for dresses with pockets and phone covers with cardholders.

John ignored Sebastian's god-awful singing as he drove them to a bar to watch a band perform still questioning whether if this was the right decision. Sebastian had stayed over after the event and woke John up to ramble on about meeting his fiance and her roommate.

He had declined it at first believing it to be a set up for a double date. Sebastian had only laughed and said she'd be way out of his league. It was apparently a small celebration for the friend's performance and a getaway from college pressure.

Sebastian had worn a flashy Versace button-up (a gift from his fiance apparently) with dark pants and a studded R earring on his left ear representing Rebecca. "You look like a chick." John stated when he took another glance at what his friend was wearing.

"Least I don't look like I'm about to head into a business deal." Sebastian retorted at John's chosen outfit. John had chosen to slick his hair back, wearing a dark coat over his light beige button-up and loose black jeans.

John frowned and wondered if he was dressed too formally. Arriving at the bar, he gave his keys to the valet before heading in. "Did you text Rebecca we're here?"

Sebastian only nodded and mentioned that the two of them had gotten a table near the stage. He was about to ask about the other girl's name when he accidentally bumped into someone. Muttering an apology, he bends to pick up her phone and handed it to her. She only nodded and continued her conversation with someone named Michael.

"J come on, I think I see her!" John only rolled his eyes at Sebastian's child-like excitement before following behind quietly. He had planned to stay and watch the band quietly before taking his leave. But the plan flew out of the room when he stumbled into a familiar pair of eyes.

Her hair was styled differently this time like it was blown out to make it look like she had just come out of a magazine, especially wearing that stunning silky dress accentuating her figure even more. Her hazel brown eyes rounded in surprise, her red lips parted and she wagged her finger at John. "You!"

John felt himself pale.
