Chapter 41: Volume 2 Chapter 2

Waking up from my nightmarish slumber, I again was greeted with an unknown sight. A somewhat bright light illuminating my face in an unfamiliar place. Glancing more at the room, I noticed a few similar beds from the one I'm using. The place is probably somesort of clinic, was my first assumption.

Trying to get up from my bed, I suddenly felt an intense pain in my body. Checking the cause, I noticed that the body of mine is covered in bandages. Upon seeing the things, I finally remembered why.

"Oh right... I was injured from the Train incident."

As I lay in the comfortable bed, the door of the room suddenly opened, revealing Evee in the other side.

"Oh? Your finally awake." Evee spoke.

Entering the unknown room, she then made her way to where I lay.

"I was getting somewhat worried, you know. It's been a day since you started sleeping."

"A day?" I echoed. "What do you mean?"

"It means what it means, you've been sleeping for an entire day ever since you were injured."

"Wait, so what about miss Katherine's business?" I asked.

"It's already over." Evee explained. "We're currently just waiting here until you recover and ready for a trip back."

"I see..."

Thinking that we currently are in this problem because of me, I can't help but feel bad. This is supposedly my first mission outside of other areas, yet I already mess up. I wonder how this will reflect on my reports, if that even exist.

Seeing my current look, Evee sighs and gave me some words of encouragement.

"[Sigh...] Don't feel too bad, Bruce, such event was unanticipated." Evee spoke. "If anything, you should be more proud. You were able to handle one of the suspects and hold your own in a fight with one of the most wanted criminals in South Terracore."

"Hold my own, right... I wasn't even able to fight back in that instance."

Touching the injury, I received from that encounter, I can't help but feel frustrated. I felt so weak at that time, that I wasn't even able to land a single blow. Biting my lips, the thought of me dying at that time lingers my mind. If Null wasn't there to save me, my fate would have been surely worse.

Seeing my frustrated look, Evee suddenly hit me on the head. Feeling the aching pain in my head, I can't help but cry out in pain.

"Ouch! W-why did you do that for?" I asked.

"You've been giving me this sad look, that I can't help but be annoyed." Evee explained. "Cheer up, will you. You did your job as intended and survived, so that's that."

"Thanks for the words of encouragement, I suppose..." I said with an ironic tone.

"That's real life for you." Evee said. "You will potentially face more danger once you're assigned with more missions. So, I advise you to be more careful next time... most especially because you still have that sister of yours."

"I'll keep that in mind..."

Grabbing something from her bag, Evee then reveals an odd-looking box in her hand. Confused as what's the box, she then gave the thing to me.

"What's this?"

"Your lunch." Evee answered. "You haven't eaten anything ever since you've fallen asleep, so you must be very hungry."

Receiving the box from her hand, I quietly check and open the thing. As I slowly uncover the box lid, I was greeted with an unknown food inside. Confused as to what I'm seeing, I can't help but ask Evee what it is.

"And what are these things, supposed to be?" I asked.

"It's marinated Deep Eel with Cave Rice." Evee answered. "The side are Cherryshrooms and sliced Cave Cabbages."

"What an odd choice of names for a food."

"I don't that its odd." Evee spoke. "Have you not tasted this food before?"

"Not at all. If anything, this is my first time eating this."

Picking the utensils that was part of the box, I calmly began eating my supposed lunch. Tasting the marinated eel along with the rice, I was surprised to find it to be good. Judging from my taste, I assumed that the eel was cooked through smoking. Its smoky feel and strong marination gave the eel a somewhat distinct taste, which my taste buds thoroughly enjoyed. The rice doesn't taste bad by its own, but with the marinated juices of the eel soaking its insides. The rice becomes more flavorful, which when combined with the eel turns into a perfect harmony of taste.

"You seem to be enjoying yourself." Evee said, as she watches me eat the food.

"U-uumm... of course. I really found it surprising that it tastes this good, where did you even bought this?"

"Remember the place I mentioned when we were at the train?"

"You mean the one that sells pork-based food?"

"Yep that's the one." Evee said. "When I was buying some food for the others, I noticed they were trying to sell that dish you're currently eating for a limited time."

"I see..." I mutter as I place another rice in my mouth.

"Such a flavorful piece of seafood, isn't it? It's truly surprising that it's even made by a place that mainly sold pork-base dishes."

"It sure is." I answered.

.

.

.

Finishing the dish, I then thanked Evee for her effort of bringing me some lunch.

"T-thank you, Evee..."

"No need for the compliments" Evee spoke. "Such a thing is normal. Plus, with you injured I highly doubt that you would be able to even get out of this place."

"Right..." Glancing more at the place, it seems that I have nothing much to do in here. Seeing how Evee seems to be staying here with me, I can't help but asks her more questions.

"U-umm... about miss Katherine's business? Mind if I learn more about it?"

"There isn't really much to say about it." Evee explained. "Me and Null were literally just waiting outside. So, from what Pebble mentioned, it was just a normal meeting of leaders and representatives of other settlements and city."

"I see... Speaking of which what ever happened to the train culprits?"

"Oh that? Well... aside from the two whom escaped, the other two whom both of you have taken care off were captured and handed to the officials." Evee explained.

"Two?" I echoed. "What do mean that there are two that escaped?"

"Well since you were asleep in the whole interrogation, I might as well explain it to you. The whole murder hijacking was just a set-up by the criminal gang known as Underground Bandits."

"A set-up?"

"The real purpose of the criminal gang was to steal the weapons and equipment cargo that was also travelling with us in the train."

"Wait... if that's the case the whole murder...."

"It was just a distraction to keep the people and others; whom may hinder their plan, at bay."

Hearing the truth of the entire situation, I can't help but form a firm fist. Such a horrendous act for such a petty crime, is so sickening to me. Feeling a rage arousing from inside of me, I can only lay in my bed and bite my lips, for there's nothing I can vent this anger of mine.

.

.

"[Sigh...] Don't get too emotional about it." Evee said. "Such things are normal in this world. So instead of wasting energy thinking about it, just focus more on what you can currently do."

Heading Evee's words, I then lay in my bed, not thinking much of the incident. But remembering the lady's cries when her partner was killed. I still can't let go of it. If only I was stronger, I thought. Then maybe I could have done something... I could probably have avenged her partner's death and capture the perpetrators.

Seeing my look, Evee the suddenly hit me on the head, once more.

-Bang...

"Ouch!" I cried in pain. "W-why did you do that for...?"

"Stop being dumb, Bruce." Evee said.

"W-what?"

"I've been trying to help and save as much people in my entire life, so I know what it looks to feel anger when you aren't able to save someone." Evee explained. "So, I'm telling you to stop being dumb. Such path is dangerous and with you having a family, I don't think that you're fit for it."

Saying her goodbye's Evee then made her way to door. But before fully leaving the place, she gave me a few additional words.

"Oh, right? Before I leave. There's something I must tell you."

'What is it?" I asked.

"Due to the incident, the rails and the area of where the incident occurred are currently being investigated. Essentially, we can't leave for at least three days." Evee explained

"I see... Wait! Then what about Claire?" I spoke "I promised her that I'll just be here for a day."

"There's no need to worry, Bruce. We already contacted the settlement and informed someone to tell Claire about this news."

"I see..." I sigh. "Good thing I left her some money."

"Anyhow that would be all, so please take care and don't do anything stupid. Recovering should be your first priority, considering you're keeping your job as a secret."

Waving her hand, Evee then left the place, leaving me alone by myself. With nothing much to do in the place, I then lay back to my comfortable bed and not after I then fall asleep.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hello Lawrenche! How did you like your body?" The women in black robe spoke.

Upon falling asleep, I again was brought in this vast space of white light. With the ominous women in black robe in my front.

With me sitting in her table, she then magically poured me a drink using the floating tea kettle.

"What the hell are you talking about?" I questioned.

"Come on now Lawrainche... don't tell me that you'd already forget? Didn't I told you that you died."

"What nonsense are you babbling about?" I spoke. "If such is the case, then I wouldn't have woken up."

"Precisely! That's why I did a bit something to somewhat resurrect you back to life."

"..." Not believing her words, all I did was stay silent.

"Pupupu... I did a good job right?" The woman in black robe chuckle in delight. "Even your friends are none the wiser."

Seeing how staying quiet won't seem to do anything, it seems that I do need to converse with her.

"[Sigh...] Why did you even bring me here?" I exhaustedly asked,

"Ehh... didn't I already told you my dear Lawrein? I'm a very bored person, so every once in a while, I'm in need of a company."

"Is that seriously, all?" I asked with a serious face.

"Yep." The women in black robe nod with a straight look. "Anyhow... I still haven't received that praise for what I did."

"The hell are you talking about?"

"Come on Lawrice, praise me. Your master did something good for you, yet you're leaving her unpraised."

Knowing that something bad might happened if I don't comply, I was forced to compliment the odd woman.

"U-uumm... thank you, I-I suppose..." I hesitantly said.

"Hehehe... I got praised. How truly lovely." The women in black robe giggled. "Say Lawrenche could you please pat my head."

"W-what..."

"Come on now. Rub my head with that hand of yours, please."

Hearing another odd request from her, I again was forced to comply. Raising my hand, I then gently pat her head.

"Hehehe... how lovely." The woman in black robe said. "You truly feel different from everything here."

With my hand touching her silky white hair, I can't help but be embarrassed. I've never even held a woman's hand, yet I'm currently patting some woman's head.

As I gently stroke her head, I was suddenly caught surprised, when the women in black robe pulled my hand and hold it in her cheek. With my hand touching her pale yet warm skin, my face suddenly reddened in embarrassment.

But just as I try to hide my embarrassed face, the woman in black robe suddenly asked for another odd request.

"Say... Lawrenche could you please kiss me."

Eh?

Author Note: Sorry for not updating lately. Some family events and lack of motivation prevented me from continuing. Anyhow I'm back (I think...) and I'll try updating if I can.

PS: While I was busy not updating this story, I tried reading a few books and made another story to practice changing my writing style. So I'm going to share said story (Cause why not.)
