Chapter 6: WHO'S BOSS
As I sat in the cab to the office,I made a call to Mark, he didn't pick so I left a message for us to meet. I was able to beat the traffic and got to the office on time. I arranged my desk and sat down. The cleaners already cleaned the office,they were quite diligent in their work. The first set of people to arrive were the legal secretaries, with their air of superiority. I was amused by the way they acted around the lesser staffs like myself. One would think they were one of the many attorneys in the firm. With their high heels, starched overpriced shirts,short skirts and face heavily made up. You would think they all belong to a club where they discussed how to appear every single day. To be honest,I wouldn't be surprised if that were true. I paid them no mind anyway. I walked into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee,maybe it would help with the drowsiness. I walked into the four legal secretaries at the firm,Alexa,Juliet,Sharon and Jennifer.
"Do you see the way she sits there with her cheap clothes and cheap perfumes,pretending to read and not even bothering to greet any one of us as we walk by? "
"I thought I was the only one who noticed. Who the hell does she think she is? An ordinary receptionist. I bet my salary can feed her entire family"
"And she's not even that beautiful. Just another bland face in a simple body. I don't know what the fuss is. Almost every male Associate here is going on about her"
"Girls you give her too much credit. Me I've decided to teach her a lesson. Someone needs to remind that twat the hierarchy of this place"
I almost turned and went back to my desk but I stopped running from my problems and confrontations a long time ago and these ladies didn't even measure up to a problem for me. So I cleared my throat "Hello ladies "
The other three hurriedly sipped their coffee in an awkward manner. The leader of the coven, Alexa, the managing partner's secretary,on the other hand looked me up and down"She can talk ladies. I was beginning to think she was mute"
I didn't bother to reply. I simply started to get my coffee. As I reached for a cup she spoke again sarcastically this time "Excuse me madam,those set of cups are meant for the legal secretaries. Yours is down there with the non administrative staffs'"
It was obvious she wanted to cause a quarrel but I wasn't going to give her the pleasure,so I simply closed the cabinet and opened the one below, took a cup and made my coffee to my taste. Last I checked the cabinet the cup comes from doesn't change the taste of the coffee and the irony of it all is that we were all using disposable paper cups, except the ceramics meant for the associates and the senior partners, so I didn't understand what the big deal was. I stood in a corner away from them and sipped my coffee. But it appeared Alexa wasn't done with me just yet
"Some people need to know their place and learn to remain there"
I had a lot on my mind. Bantering words with an office bully wasn't one of them. So I downed my coffee and walked out. I muttered as I left "Unlike some people I have actual work to do"
That hit a nerve. She turned on her heels towards my direction "Was she referring to me?"
I bet she was fuming with rage but I didn't stay back to find out.

"Alexa come on. Don't get yourself worked up over her. She's not worth it" Juliet tried to calm her down. She was the quiet one among them
Jennifer would not have it"Don't tell her to calm down. Didn't you hear what that idiot said. Simply because the managing partner's office isn't occupied currently doesn't mean Alexa doesn't do any work so why would she say that? "She was as angry as Alexa
"And how dare she? Does she have any idea that she could lose her job just with one word from Alexa? Does she know who she is messing with? The nerves on her!" Sharon added
Alexa gave an evil grin"Leave it to me girls. I'll show that dimwit who's boss in this office. Even the associates scurry to be in my favour. I'll teach her a lesson she will not forget in a hurry and by the time I'm done, she'll be on her knees where she belongs begging for mercy."

As I walked to my desk my phone rang, it was Mark
"Hey Mark.I'm fine thank you. I need a favour please. My best friend is out of a job and I was hoping you could have something for her. Are there any vacancies at the company? Oh that's good. I'll send her to you Monday morning and Mark? She must not know I am the managing director OK? We'll be meeting at the end of the month to go over our plans for this coming quarter. As usual it's just going to be me and you,then whatever we agree you take back to the board alright. Thank you Mark"
As I the call ended I looked up just as I bumped into someone and they dropped the documents they were carrying "I'm so sorry please. I wasn't looking " I apologized as I hurriedly bent to pick the documents. A pair of manly hands reached out to pick up some of the documents. As I stood up I was greeted with the most beautiful man I had ever met. He was much taller than I was and I am pretty tall, he had thin lips, a slightly pointed nose, square jaw,caramel skin and hazelnut eyes. One would think he wore contacts. He didn't have a clean shave,he grew his beards but they were neatly trimmed and well shaped. He was well built, not too muscular but he filled out his suit perfectly. I bet he had well chiselled abs underneath those clothes. And his cologne was all man. He looked at me briefly as he collected his documents from me " It's fine. I wasn't looking where I was going either. I hope I didn't hit you too hard"
Actually he did. But I wasn't going to tell him that so I flashed him a smile "No you didn't. I'm good"
"Well, hello there" Alexa's voice came from behind me,drawled, laced with sexiness. I almost cringed at the desperation apparent in her voice." Good morning Shawn. You look handsome as ever" She placed a hand intimately on his shoulder. Then turning to me,"You,what's your face,don't you have calls to take?"
Ouch! Was that supposed to hurt my feelings. Without as much as a glance I walked past the guy who's name I just learnt was Shawn and the randy Alexa, straight to my desk. I did not have time for all of that. And it looked like they were intimate. A damn shame if you asked me. The guy appeared responsible, Alexa is quite the opposite. But nobody asked me. They should know better than bringing that into the office though but what do I know
The rest of the day went by slowly. I welcomed the Senior partners as they arrived, welcomed clients, took calls, booked appointments, went to some offices when I was summoned, just my regular duties. I also made a few personal calls
Office hours ended and I headed to the car dealers where I was supposed to meet with someone
