Chapter 47: Teachings of Psychology

Fei was caught off guard by her master's sudden hug.

"Master?"

Suddenly, it dawned on her. D-Did she make him upset, again? Did she misinterpret his emotions? Her lower lip trembled. "Master! What is wrong?"

Carlos didn't answer with speech, he only squeezed even harder.

Fei rapidly thought back to all those 'introductory to psychology' she read from the library. It was said that children normally hugged as a way to express their happiness or affection to the object they were hugging. Maybe he wasn't mad after all?

At these times, the correct response would be to hug back or gently pat the child on the back as a way of soothing or calming them. After thinking it through, Fei began to pat her master.

However, it was obvious that she was unused to doing something so intimate, and her movements were stiff.

Carlos finally spoke. "Fei, you'll be my bodyguard and protect me forever, right?" His voice was fragile as if it could break at any given moment.

Fei's heart skipped a beat, and she nodded. "Yes."

It was a pointless question to ask. He is her master. She will be his bodyguard forever. Definitely. It had already been decided from the start. But even as she knew this, Fei's heart could not help but feel warm from the affection that her master showed.

"It's a promise, ok?" He loosened his grasp and looked up at her, holding out his pinky finger.

"Pinky promise."

Fei didn't quite understand what a 'pinky promise' was, but she did know that it would bind her forever to her master. It should be like a ritual or something for the promise, she thought to herself.

Without a second of lapse, she imitated her master and held out her pinky.

Carlos intertwined their fingers and pressed their thumbs together. "You can't ever break this promise, Fei. Or else you'll get struck by fifty million strikes of blue lightning!"

He beamed.

Fei nodded and silently repeated the phrase to herself. Never break this promise. Or else you'll get struck by fifty million strikes of blue lightning.

It would be a promise that she shall keep until the last of her days.

After that vow was made, Carlos reverted to his bubbly self again.

To him, having a person like Fei that would always be beside him no matter what happened made all of his worries disappear.

It didn't matter if the entire world turned against me; as long as I have Fei by my side, everything will be alright.

As the two began chatting, Carlos didn't notice the flickering lens of a camera hidden deep in a crevice in a certain corner of his room.

Fei noticed it, but she had been informed beforehand and thus was not alarmed.

Sitting in a dark room, a man was focusing on the scene before his eyes.

Suddenly he sighed and rubbed the area in between his eyebrows. "Aleks, call that person. Now."

The subservient valet that stood at the door slightly bowed and nodded, immediately pressing some buttons on a bracelet like device on his arm.

A projection with a black screen materialized in the air and it expanded until it was around 200 inches wide.

Meanwhile, the already dark room darkened further, with the only light source coming from the projection.

The black screen flickered, and a large, ruddy man with white whiskers around his mouth appeared. Behind him was an office, similar to the one that Mr. Rochester used.

"Rochester! What a beautiful day today! I suspected something good was going to happen, and it turns out that I was right!" The man in the screen smiled, squinting his cerulean eyes.

"Indeed, it is a beautiful day, Maurul." Mr. Rochester, who was the man in the room, replied with his lips curved upward.

But he had no smile in his eyes.

"It is a pleasure to speak with you. Tell me, how can I help you? You are not the type of person to call for no reason, I presume?" Maurul cut straight to the point.

The man spoke the truth. There was no point in loitering for too long. "Yes. I was just thinking, can I please see all the security camera records that my son is in from the accelerated camp?"

"… Why so? Rochester, you know that this goes against my regulations." There was a bit of alarm shown on Maurul's face.

"If you can not agree to my request, then please inform me of all of those that made the camp a bad experience for my son." Mr. Rochester looked at him straight in the eye. "You should understand what I mean."

Maurul fell deep in thought. Outwardly, he still looked relatively calm, but he was frantic.

Although the two men called each other affectionately and acted very friendly with each other, in truth, they were not that close. Rochester held much more power than he did.

However, he couldn't just agree so easily to the request. There were other concerns. There were other influential personnel that attended his schools; if he were to allow Rochester to see the records or reveal to him selective records, then he would be betraying the trust of those other people.

It was only because of his strict rules and regulations that those people would send their children to his schools. If it became known that he cooperated with Rochester, then others would be rushing to him trying to get the same deal that Rochester got.

It wasn't as if Rochester is particularly influential in society; his name might hold power, but most of his actual power is fake. To many, the man is alike to a god from the legends, worshipped from afar. The only thing is that he is extremely important to the military and government. If I were to get some other powerful people to back me up, offending Rochester should be fine.

Making up his mind, Maurul grinned at the man in the screen. His shoulders relaxed considerably.

However, the next sentence from that man immediately tensed him up even more than before.
