Chapter 2: Kneebuster
Staring at the gruesome scene he couldn't help but shiver. No matter what way you looked at it this was not normal, some might say it was a domestic dispute but when you could see the intestines hanging out of the woman's mouth as she ate into someone's stomach you could safely say that it has gone past the boundaries of a normal domestic dispute.
This was supposed to be Cei's first interview after graduating from university. But the scene he was witnessing outside of the interview location had cast some serious doubt on future work life. He wanted to refuse to believe this was some kind of man-eating zombie, and that maybe women just snapped and decided to eat this person… But the more he thought about it the more likely it seemed that she was a zombie. It was hard to deduce anything else as she just looked so feral looking as she just tore into the man, and no less in the middle of the street.
However, just as he was pondering the potential reasons behind this somewhat animalistic scene before him, he heard a guttural roar as the woman who was just moments before feasting on some poor soul's body, burst into a sprint as she latched onto a new victim who was just meters away. When he heard the roar he was surprised, to say the least, he wasn't even sure a woman's voice went that deep. But seeing the woman who was previously feasting on some guy on the floor suddenly break into a sprint and chase a nearby pedestrian like a dog chasing a bone gave him all the clarity he needed. Because maybe he could believe she was just batshit crazy if it was just one person but two. He was more inclined to believing his 'wild' theory that she was a zombie.
But it didn't matter how much he pondered about what exactly was wrong with this feral woman. But he sure as hell was about to find out, because if Cei Briar was anything he was a man of action. Because nothing in this world could be proven without a little. Experimentation.
So he began to look around for anything to arm himself with and noticed a small protruding pipe in an alleyway to his left. Although it was slightly smaller in length than a baseball bat it was just perfect for what he was about to do. So he got to work and quietly sneaked away from his potential zombie suspect and went into the small alleyway. Before he proceeded to walk up to the small pipe and slam his foot down, dislodging the pipe from its components and although it took a little bit effort he was still in good condition. Before finally walking out of the alleyway and walking slowly back towards the messy scene on the street.
There he saw the women had successfully taken down victim number two and was enjoying a somewhat gruesome snack. But if he was gonna test his theory he had to get a bit more up close and personal. So he took a deep breath, slightly adjusted his footing and slowly tightened his grip on the freshly dislodged pipe before he finally let loose a somewhat quiet whistle. But on this street, it seemed to ring out clearly and the woman who was just moments ago eating fervorously, suddenly snapped her head up from her food as she slowly turned towards his direction. And when she was fully turned in his direction he could fully appreciate this 'women' in all her glory. Her mouth was hung slightly open and slight chunks of pink could be seen between her teeth which were dyed red by her eating habits. Her face was painted blood red like a badge of pride showing her past glory and spread messily like a badly applied makeup however it was almost impossible to laugh at her appearance. She was just plain terrifying as her face was contorted in an expression of permanent fury as if she had just met her arch-nemesis, but what was most scary about her harrowing expression was that her eyes were glazed over with a slight red tint as she stared at him, like a demon about to drag its victim to hell.
But still, despite her appearance, Cei kept his composure as he looked at the deranged appearance of the women and asked in a concerned voice
"Babe, you're looking a bit rough. Do you want me to call someone."
And just as he had finished speaking She had broken into another roar as she ran towards him like some kind of set 8 kid. It was meant to be some kind of intimidating scene. But he couldn't help but laugh when she ran like that. However, when she was about 5 meters away from him his face changed as he breathed out deeply as she continued to crawl closer to his location with her mouth open and primed to devour him. But just as she was at arm's length of him he dodged slightly to the left and released his taut muscles as he swung his pipe towards her kneecap as she glided past him. A huge cracking sounded out as the 'women' who had missed her target lost her balance and flew into a wall. And as he looked at the scene that followed he was sure that this 'woman' was indeed some kind of zombie. It didn't scream in pain neither did it run away in fear, instead, it continued to crawl towards him with an insatiable hunger plastered all over its face. As it continued to growl and roar in his direction in some kind of pitiful show of power.
Cei was satisfied with his discoveries, as he looked over the zombie with a slight look of disdain, and pulled out his phone as he dialed the emergency services. And when he finally managed to connect to the police service, he informed the police of the situation. And after he had informed the police he grabbed his phone and removed his sim before he smashed his phone and chucking it inside a nearby bin.
He wasn't stupid he knew something was up with the situation. If someone told him that this was the first appearance of man-eating zombies he would call bullshit. There is obviously more to this situation, there had to have been more cases, he refused to believe that this city was the epicentre. The governments around the world must have some kind of knowledge about this… He wasn't exactly sure what it was, but he was sure he was not the first to know of it so he only informed the police of a slightly censored version of events and destroyed his phone as he didn't want to be caught up in some kind of government cover-up conspiracy.
But still, he wasn't sure what to do from here, he didn't wanna act like some schmuck and tell the world about some impending zombie apocalypse and get tracked down the feds. And neither did he want to go home and prepare like some kind of doomsday prepper, he wasn't even sure if this would turn into a big issue. For all he knew this could just blow over and he would just look the fool for doing all that preparation for nothing, that would suck.
But he wasn't going to just put his head in the sand and pretend this event never occurred, because it did and at least two people were dead on the street next to him and one was roaring like a retard while crawling towards him right now. Anyway, he still had some things to test before the police came and he had to do it as quickly as possible.
So he quickly obscured his face with a hat he had in his bag and walked over to one of the mauled bodies on the pavement as he placed his fingers on their neck and listened for any breathing. And the result as expected was that the person was indeed dead now all he had to do was move somewhere in eyeline and watch if there were any changes before the police came.
And so he walked off towards a nearby apartment complex before climbing the stairs to the roof and just lay there as he watched how the scene would develop from here.
