Chapter 56: Chapter 53
"What did you all say?" Joy asked them, unable to grasp the situation.
"What? Don't tell me you don't remember you own birthday!" Nick screamed and all his hair seemed to stand up at the clueless expression on Joy's face. Mari from the side opened her flip phone and showed Joy the date that day.
"Oh, it's November 7. Nothing special." Joy told them and smiled. However, some thought hit her hard. She took her own phone from the pocket of her skirt and looked at the home screen with the wallpaper that showed her sleeping at Light's shoulder. Just that photo made her smile." No- Nov-November 7?!"
"Joy, I must be overestimating you. You don't remember you own birthday?" Nathan asked her with a clueless look on his face. Mari noticed that and spanked him on his shoulder.
"Sorry. My plate was full." Joy rubbed her cheek and smiled. "I guess I'm a year older now."
"How passive, irritating and unpleasant! I did not expect that ugly response from you!" Nick said and laughed. However, the bell that rang so loud from their school interrupted their getting together.
"Oh, crap! Let's go!" Nathan, who was extremely grade conscious started running and the others followed him.
"Who thought of that surprise?" Joy asked them as they ran. Nick faced her and smiled.
"Oh, Light. You are being searched for a sloppy surprise!" He said and laughed as Light flinched.
"No..." Joy said and stopped running. As her steps faded, the others stopped as well and looked at her. "Thank you, everyone." she smiled at them.
Nathan blushed so hard and Mari became teary-eyed. However, Light pulled her and started running again.
"We're running late." He told them and the others ran too.
They were nearly marked late by their first subject teacher because of the ruckus they made at the bridge heading to their school when they suddenly remembered that they were scheduled to be having their second quarter exams and binge read their notes. They had been worried about Light's grades but it seemed like he wasn't fazed at all.
"I guess the principal gave you an exception for not appearing for at least a month. How lucky." Their teacher told him as he let their group in. "However, you should probably pray to all your gods because this examination is probably the hardest you will ever get in your life. I hope you reviewed all the lessons we've had about all the works of Shakespeare!"
"Amazing! You brought a Nazarene figurine with you!" Nick screamed with glee as he saw Henry praying to the figurine about the size of a half ruler and a pink rosary hanged on his neck.
"Stop making that face Kogane!" He added as he saw Kogane teary-eyed. However, the sight of the restless Fallon on the side surprised them as black eyebags surrounded her tired eyes.
"Take your seats. Get one and pass."
Everyone looked nervous as they took the test papers but Light seemed to be too chill even if he skipped class for a month.
"Good luck guys." their teacher said and roamed around the classroom to intimidate them
"Why are you covering your answers David?" he asked one of the students who flinched.
"It's to prevent you from seeing how stupid I am sir!" He impulsively screamed and it sent the whole class laughing at how dumb he is.
"You look relaxed, Mr. Elkin." He said as he approached Light who was already on the third out of 4 pages but he just continued to answer.
"Ajan, you seem confident about yourself. You too Nathan. Oh, before I forget, Light, Joy, Nathan, Mari and Fallon you have interviews later because you aced your mock tests. How lucky of you." their teacher said and scowled at them.
"It's not luck sir. It's excellence!" Nick screamed from behind.
The bell finally rang and everyone already passed their test papers. The whole class complained about the test because it was too hard and it compelled them to rely on rote memory, however, the people at the back remained calm.
"How'd you do?" Nick asked Nathan who was leaning on the table.
"I think I've messed up 1 or 2 questions." he answered and Nick smiled wide. "Why?"
"I think, I'll get a perfect score."
"What a perfect birthday!" Joy told herself and noticed that Light was looking at her. "Hey Light. When's your birthday?"
She noticed that Light's eyes widened as she spoke. "I don't know." he said calmly.
"Oh is that so?" Joy replied.
"Don't think about unnecessary stuff. It's your birthday." Light told her and smiled.
"Hey there you two, let's go to the office now! And after that we have math!" Mari told them and walked away.
"Coming!" Joy said and followed.
