Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Sufficient Happiness
Their classroom was not as wide as Nathan had expected- however, its just enough for the class population that he supposed to be approximately 45 or more. He looked around the room and saw different circles of friends gathered around in corners. Some smiled at him because they thought that he was a new kid. Nathan couldn't be more delighted because he felt that he was accepted and that he belonged there. He tapped himself in the cheeks while the other 4 was shocked especially Hope.
"This isn't a dream right?" Nathan asked Nick, Mari, Light, and Joy who were shocked to see what he did. "Everything is perfect here. It's like a dreamland."
"Bro. Do you want me to punch you to wake you up?" Nick said and tapped him at his shoulder.
"So what if this is a dream? Should you not be happy of having a nice dream at the end of the day?" Light said. Nathan felt like he was slapped hard in the face and woke up in reality. He felt his hurting cheeks and his swollen arms.
'Good.' he thought. He can feel pain and he knows that he is definitely awake. The chair beside Nick was the only empty seat in the class and he was driven to it by Nick's push. Beside him was another girl who seemed to be insensitive to her surroundings because she was focused on Light on the other side.
"What's his case?" Joy asked Light.
Light finished arranging his things on his desk first before looking at Joy.
"Bullied."
"Huh? He seems outgoing."
"He's an introvert. His cuts on his wrists almost filled his entire arm." Light said and looked at his wrists. The cuts from Corriene were healing rapidly, but it will leave him a scar.
"Uhmm.. Light?" Joy whispered while he looked at Nick and Nathan who were happily talking to each other. Light looked at him. "He.. Will.. Will Nathan forge-"
"Good afternoon class." Joy was interrupted by the arrival of their Humanities teacher who promised to conduct a quiz right after every discussion. "Reporters get ready."
"Light." Nathan called and approached Light who was just getting ready to leave the room. Mari and Nick followed. "May I talk to you in private?"
Light just nodded while Joy shot them with a worried expression as she packed her bag.
"What's with those two?" Mari asked Joy. Nick knew what was going to happen to Nathan- he had already learned that in the past when Mari needed help, and everything that happened at the rooftop became a blurry memory to her. He clicked his tongue because he knew Light knows what he was doing, but he does not want to be forgotten by his friend. He knew that Nathan's eyes were sad and he was like the past Mari so he tried his best to cheer him up.
"You can go without me. Hope? Can you walk Mari home? Her house is near yours." Nick said.
"Fear not, Nickolas. I know. I know." Mari smiled and gave Nick a light pat on the shoulders. "Go on."
Nick held her hand threw her a thankful gaze and went away.
"What were you talking about?" Joy asked. "And he called me Hope just like Light."
"It's a secret!" Mari smiled and left the room.
"Hey! Mari! Wait for me!" Joy laughed and went chasing her in the busy hallway.
Nathan led Light towards the rooftop where they ate a while ago because he felt like something will happen to him. Light looked at his necklace as they climbed the stairs- but 10:00pm was still there, however, he saw a glimpse of joy in Nathan's eyes a while ago and that was sufficient enought to save hin from his misery.
Because of the great sadness he had endured, he was able to appreciate even the tiniest bit of happiness he had felt.
"Light. Can you tell me your mission?" Nathan, who was still in front of Light stopped walking as they reached the rooftop asked. Light closed his necklace.
"My mission... I was appointed to save people and be the comfort of those who are suffering." Light replied.
"A refuge? Tell me. Is this place real?" Nathan asked, but the cheerful tone he had when all of them were together weren't apparent in his tone anymore.
"Yes, a refuge of hope for hearts in deepest despair- that is. And yes, this place is real so is everyone else."
"What are you?" Nathan asked as he faced Light again, but he was surprised to see a cold expression in his eyes.
"I am a chosen."
"Who is Joy?"
"A chosen too."
"So that's why both of you project a kind atmosphere. I suppose that I am your mission." Nathan said.
"Yes, you are one of our missions." Light replied.
"So there had already been others aside from me?" he asked.
" There were 2 before you."
"Why am I your mission?" Nathan asked again, but he knows deep inside him the reason- it was because he had drastic thoughts of ending his life and he had tried to hurt himself a fe days ago.
"Don't ask me why. Ask yourself. You're the only one who could answer that." Nathan charged at Light. He didn't want to do that, but he wanted to bring it out to someone because he hated his silence.
"Can you blame me for what my mind tells me? All my life, I was told how ugly I am- and they didn't need to tell me that because I already know it- but damn it- it was like they needed to slap it on my face so I will remember it for the rest of my life!
"I never had a friend to console me or to run to because they all went away because of the fear of having the same fate as the one I am facing! The saddest part is that I can't blame them because if they were me, I'd do the same thing!
"All I wanted was to be accepted, and all of you gave that acceptance to me, but why do I still feel empty inside? I know it Light. You told me your mission and who you are because you know that I will forget everything that happened today! Please. I am begging you Light. I can live my life with this happiness I am feeling right now, please don't take it all away from me. I don't want to forget all of you! I don't want to forget this day!"
Nathan was shaking Light so hard as he cried, but Light did not fight him back because he understood him.
"I will study here to be with all of you… so please… just take my sadness away from me- not this moment and the moments before… Light. I am begging you. Please!"
"You'll just be running away from your problems if you go here."
Nathan looked at the door and his eyes widened as he saw Nick leaning against it. He let go of Light as he saw him and tears started running down his cheeks.
"I want to be with you guys. You are the only friends I have." Nathan cried.
"Why? Do you think that your being away would stop us from being friends?" Nick said with a tone of a lecturer. Nathan looked at him.
"Friendship doesn't end there."
"But Light will erase my memories today right?" Nathan asked.
"That I cannot deny." Nick said and Nathan cried more. "But I will be with you until you wake up. But you need to want to live so you can be with us again. Once you become a part of our circle, only death can stop us from being friends. Do you get that?"
"I get it." Nathan said and wiped away his tears.
"Say it." Light from behind said.
"Say what?" Nathan asked.
"That you want to live."
"I- what?"
"That you want to live."
"uhm, okay? I-I want to live?"
Light smirked and approached him. He placed his hand on his chest and spoke.
"I am Light, the chosen one,
By right of blood that channels through me,
I proclaim myself to thee.
Your pain and worry I vanish from thee.
From now on your heart will be at ease
And the burden you carry
Give them all to me
So your heart can finally feel the peace"
Nick was frozen from where he stood because the blinding light that Light's necklace emitted sent shivers on his spine. He tried to approach the two but he cannot see anything because his eyes had a shock because of the light. He was pushed back because of the unusual strong breeze that had surrounded the two of them. Nick was worried because he treated those two as his best friends but he knew that all Light does are for the best and he wouldn't mess up.
It has been a while after the light faded out and cleared the way. Nick's eyes had recovered from the trauma and he saw Light and Nathan unconscious on the floor. He ran towards them.
"Light. Wake up. Light." He patted Light on his face but there was no response. He saw Light's wrist and Nathan's - Light had the same cuts as Nathan's. His eyes widened at the sight- because it means that Joy also had the cuts of Mari.
"Nathan, wake up." he tapped hin but he did not responded. Light from the back was conscious again and he tried to stood up while Nick hurried to take him.
"Let's go to my house. He can rest there." Light said.
"He'll freak out once he wakes up." Nick said and looked at Nathan who was lying unconsciously on the ground.
"Not if he sees you. He did not give me time to explain. I will be blurry in his memories because it was to keep him from searching for me but he will remember everything that happened this day and will mistake it as a dream. He will realize that it's not a dream once he sees you. " Light explained and gave a headstart in carrying him.
" Don't push yourself. " Nick said and helped Light and Nick on his back.
Nathan opened his eyes and was forced to get up from the sofa where he used to lay down. He saw Nick and a familiar silver hair at the kitchen. He thought he knew him but he doesn't recognize him.
" I thought it was a dream. Where am I?" Nathan approached them and asked.
"We're at Light's house." Nick smiled and flipped the meat he was frying while Light checked the rice.
"Hi. I am Light." he said and offered him his hand.
"I am Nathan" He said and took the hands of Light.
"Light? Light!" Nick flinched as he heard Nathan shout. "I did not forget anything afterall!"
