Chapter 8: The First Threat

We had been traveling for a couple of days now and consisted mostly of Daxton explaining the class system. Basically there were people who were mercenaries, doctors, merchants, knights, musicians, mages, and other things I can't remember.

That's the most similar thing compared to my village. I guess the official name of our village was sapphire forest, but since it was just a small group of us me and my family just called it the village.

And if the cast system wasn't complicated enough they were arranged into other categories: nobles and peasants.

Great. I guess you have to be rich enough to have a last and middle name, but our village already had last names. Our middle names are supposed to come to us in a dream when the ancestors decide what fits us best as a person. But I didn't really trust this guy enough to tell him about our beliefs.

Even though the first two nights I stayed up with him to guard I ended up falling asleep the third day. When I woke up I was panicked but everyone was sleeping but him. He hadn't done anything, so I guess that was one step to know he isn't going to murder us in our sleep.

As for my gift. Gifts, I practiced a little in secret with Em, explaining about the aura and the obvious mind communication thing. What I found out was I could have conversations with a person and the more I practice, the longer distance I can go. What I can't do is read minds. I can basically put words into a person's mind and they can respond back to me.

With the auras I'm thinking different colors mean different emotions. When I was talking to O I experimented a little. When I gave O a little kiss to his forehead his already yellow aura had a white shine to it's edges.

So I guessed yellow was some form of happiness since he seemed to always be happy. And white was love.

I don't know much about love, but I do love my siblings and so asked Ember what she thought about me and she also got a white shine. So I figured it must be love.

Although I figured out yellow means happiness, I couldn't figure out the meaning of the color they all originally had around them.

When I invoke an emotion the color changes, but as soon as they get over that feeling they go back to their original color. I wonder what that represents. Octavius's is yellow so it has to do with his happiness, and Ember's is violet. I haven't figured out any purple colors yet. And Daxton…I have been trying to avoid conversation with him as much as possible but when I do talk to him he's mostly a light green. But sometimes when we're walking I will turn to catch him staring at me. At those times he was a mixture of the light green and orange. Whatever those colors mean.

At the very least I don't need to know everyone's emotions all the time. I have to mentally turn this power on to see them. It would honestly be a lot harder if I hadn't done this so many times already.

"How much longer till we get there?" O asked.

"Not much further we're very close, little bun.One more night."

It was dark out soon after. We set up camp like usual, and Daxton went and caught fish for us to eat. We had to also find vegetables because Ember is vegetarian. Since she is always talking to the animals she's says something about eating them makes her feel sick.

This time Daxton brought carrots he found and some lettuce head he found in a field. Why is he going so far for us?

It kept popping up in my mind more and more and I couldn't understand it. Was he trying to gain my trust? Does he know I have dragon blood and wants to use it for something? It's kinda funny if that's the case considering I know absolutely nothing about my dragon blood.

I haven't had the time to read the book because Daxton is always around. Sometimes it's like his sole purpose is to stop me from reading the book my dad gave me. Today, especially, he seems to have a staring issue.

I got a lot of stares in the village so I'm no stranger to it. At least he doesn't have someone to whisper about me with, which is worse than the stares.

For some reason though him staring at me agitates me more than staring usually does.

"....now that the kids are sleeping why are you constantly staring at me."

"....I'm just trying... to figure you out Luv. No one has ever been so indifferent towards me the way you are and it's nice, but it's also not because apart from that I find myself wanting to get to know you. I can tell your trust in me accumulates to almost nothing. Which I can understand considering I should up just after your village got destroyed, but what else is there about you besides being a sister and having many skills."

What skills does he know I have. What is he talking about?

"I watch you everyday and you know exactly what to do. Although your silent I can tell you have some sort of secret code language with your sister."

He must be talking about my mind conversations with Ember. I turn to look at him,

"Why are you so interested."

"...I don't know I just want you to trust me and open up a little, so what will it take to prove to you I'm not your enemy."

Just then there was ruffling in the bushes right next to our camp set up. Someone else is here.

I quickly got to my feel and turned away from the bushes to grab my bow behind me, but before I could get the arrow set I felt a sharp pain on my neck. Damn it.
