Chapter 5: Adira, her Gifts, and the Books

When I was in school, at the age of 6 years old my teacher passed out the "Constitute of the Village." It was a 100 page document our teacher told us we had to read by the next day and then recite the page number from what law she would say to us. This is normal for our village, but it doesn't mean it was reasonable. This was the day I obtained my second power.

When I went home that day I never stopped reading that document. I was determined. After about 20 minutes I realized I not only had the whole thing read, but I could tell you down to what word was on what page and line all by memory. Not only that, but at 6 I understand all the laws, what they meant, better than even the elders at the village. More than that, my left forest green eye was glowing.

When I went to school the next day my teacher came to me and I immediately recited the page number. It took most kids at least five minutes, and some started crying because they couldn't get it. So when I answered so quickly she thought I was being a "smartass" in her words, and then started reciting more from the book to me. When I answered her every recital and without hesitation it became clear I had my second gift. When my teacher realized she passed out then and there. That was the last time I got to go to school with kids my age.

After that she refused to teach me, I was known as the demon child. So from them on my father was the one who taught me, since no one else was willing. I haven't used this power much since, especially since it's so noticeable. I don't have to use the gift to remember any of the stuff but I do need it to be able to read 50 times faster and understand what I'm reading. So during this time my eye is glowing. Even though one eye holds that power I still use both eyes to read.

So where am I going to start? Which shelf and which topics. Since I knew I would never see these books again, I decided that I would stay here the whole night and wouldn't stop reading.

I moved the bigger table in front of the big chair in the middle and then got to work going to each shelf and then piling books on the desk. I tried to chose the ones I was most interested in but my goal was to read all, if not close to all, these books.

I chose topics over surgery, medical herb identification, medicine ingredients and brewing , bandaging, acupuncture, rare position mixtures and cures, and at least close to 500 more from the medical shelf. I then sat down and started reading.

It was a weird but yet filling feeling to have my eye glowing again. I never particularly liked it since I was isolated because of it but, I can't say it doesn't make me feel more…me.

About an hour later I had them all read. It felt amazing. I felt like I could not only fight with medical knowledge now but heal my siblings whenever they needed it. I could also heal animals and other people, which made me get a tingling feeling inside. More. I need to read more.

I took the same amount from the war, school, and magic wall. Reading topics from biology, human anatomy, calculus, gardening, playing all sorts of instruments, kun fu, karate, tae Keon do, judo, how to feed magical pets, how to cast spells, and teleport— if I ever get that ability. I even read the singing book even though I already knew how to.

Singing was one of the things mother did for all three of us that calmed us down. After a while I tried it myself and found my siblings like it just as much, if not more. At least I have that to offer them.

After a total of 10 hours went by, I read the whole room. My Brian felt as if it was going to explode. At this moment I feel like I am the smartest person in the world.

After taking a few minutes I remembered Em and O still in the tree. They must be wondering if something happened to me. I better get back.

Right when I was about to exit I heard a shuffle type sound, and immediately got into a stance for taekwondo, the best defense martial arts for this situation. Well before I looked up and saw a tiger striped cat, with green eyes the same am my eye was. It calmly walked over to me and started to rub on me. Oh. I'm in trouble. Em may be able to talk to animals, but it doesn't make MY love for animals any less. I often played with strays since I had no one willing to hand out with me. But this time I felt a bond with this cat, and I think he felt the same , since he let me pick him up and put him in my bag as well.

"Just for a little while I promise, okay?" He meowed at me. I'm just going to assume that means okay.

I hurriedly rushed out the tiny door way saying my goodbyes to the beautiful knowledge that might never be seen again. I was sure to close that passage on my way out as I made my way in the direction of the tree. Just then I suddenly felt a presence from behind me and moved just in time to not be sliced in half by a battle axe. I looked up to see who was attacking me and found it was a creature called an ogre. Something I learned from the magic wall. It was big, ugly, green, and had warts all over itself. I soon realized I was going to have to have my first fight. I knew this would happen eventually, so even though I don't have a weapon, I have my knowledge of martial arts.

"What are you waiting for? Come and challenge me if you can."
