"Please run," Lolita screamed, running a step in front of me.
My bare feet pounded the sand as I heard his taunting voice close behind me. I tried picking up speed but I just couldn't. I was exhausted and my legs ached and I didn't even want to think of how much sweat I was secreting!
Lolita had always been the tough one.
While I went to the beauty parlor and shopping with my best friends, she trained on the track; running was the one thing she was the most passionate about.
"I'm trying," I whined as we got closer to an alleyway. I pulled Lolita into it and we crouched down behind a bin, panting and out of breath.
The footsteps I had heard behind us seemed to slow to a stop a couple of steps near the bin.
I strained my ears to hear more but the street was as silent as the grave.
"Your eyes are twinkling" a voice called out as Lolita looked at me in horror.
Unlike Lolita who paired straight blonde hair with deep brown eyes, I got stuck with curly blonde hair and very bright shiny green eyes, taken right from my mother.
"Close your eyes," Lolita snapped furiously at me and I looked in confusion and fear at her as the footsteps got closer and closer to us.
"I don't understand," I whimpered silently, looking at her brown eyes blending into the night.
"Your eyes," she said softly, her voice a silent whisper this time as she ran a palm slowly over my face.
"Close them."
