"It's a girl," the doctor said, walking up to Jeremy.
He raised his head and looked at the doctor that had spent the last six hours in the delivery room with his wife.
He got up with a jerk and couldn't suppress the huge burst of relief that ran through him at that moment.
He raced past the doctor, down the hallway, and into the maternity unit. Standing outside of the delivery room, he took in deep breaths to compose himself before pushing open the door slowly.
Amy sat up on the bed against the pillows, her eyes drooping and her smile bursting with happiness.
She glanced up when her husband entered the room before looking over as a nurse walked over to Jeremy, the little bundle in her arms.
"This one's a fighter," the nurse said with a smile on her face as she handed Jeremy the tiny pink baby girl.
"She didn't cry once. Not even a splutter."
Jeremy cradled the baby, too overwhelmed with joy to even look inside the blanket. He walked over to the bed and picked up his wife's hand, before gently sitting next to her on the bed.
"It's a girl" Amy muttered as the nurse left the room to give the happy couple some privacy.
Only then did Jeremy slowly look into the blanket and the little one looked right back at him, blinking a couple of times.
"She has your eyes," Jeremy muttered as Amy peered into the blanket as well to look at her baby for the first time.
Having both her mother and father stare at her, all the newborn child could do was stare back, her green eyes shining with no trace of tears.
Like other babies, she was supposed to be crying to be fed or at least fast asleep, but this baby gazed right back at them. This caused Amy to laugh, tears running down her face as she touched the baby's fingers
It seemed like forever as Jeremy stared at the child and the child stared back.
After a while, the infant lifted her left hand and slowly reached for her father's finger. She frowned when she could not find it and transferred her gaze to her mother.
Jeremy was bursting with joy at the little child in his arms. He placed his finger in the infant's palm and the infant turned her gaze from Amy to look at him.
It was at that moment that he understood a father's instinct to protect his daughter. Never would he let anything or anyone harm his little princess.
Satisfied, the baby closed her eyes and fell into a peaceful sleep.
The rain outside wasn't just as drizzle anymore.
The clouds had turned grey and a strong wind accompanied the rain as it tapped against the windows and roof of the hospital.
"Shay," Amy muttered as she kissed the baby's hand and looked into her husband's eyes "Shay Hunter".
"I love it," he said as a tear slowly ran down his face. He kissed his wife's forehead after gently handing her the little pink baby "It's perfect."
The rain fell heavily now, knocking violently on the windows as Jeremy stood. He slowly walked towards the window and looked out into the night.
"Perfect," he muttered silently to himself.
