"What do you mean he didn't die?" The man spat out, throwing a glass at his guest.
"I left him there to bleed to death, but in the morning he was gone. I..." the man stammered.
"I made a mistake me lord...."
"Yes I can see." The man paced the room and trying to think of a recourse.
"There is...There is something else."
"And what would that be?" The somber tone of his master gave him chills so he spilled everything out.
"I killed someone else."
"You what?" The master bellowed.
"I... He had a birth mark on his cheek and I mistook it for..."
He felt the blow to his bones and he was thrown three meters back.
"You good for nothing. I told you that boy has to die! If you can't do it properly then you aren't of any use to me!"
The master removed a dagger from his cloak and stabbed the man.
"Bernard." He yelled a second later.
"Yes my lord."
"Get rid of this" he pointed to the dead body.
"Yes my lord."
"One more thing Bernard."
The servant stopped midway.
"This dolt could not complete his task. I trust you will not be as disappointing.... The boy has to die!"
"Sure thing my lord"
The master was left alone and he turned his attention towards the bottle of whiskey. He poured himself a glass and stared out the window.
The boy would die and there would be no more witnesses. Nothing to incriminate him. He laughed as he thought about it. In the glass in front of him, pale green eyes stared back. Yes, he would win.
Christian felt uncomfortable on the way to London. The boy was with them and he did not even spare a glance to him, monopolizing Eva .
He felt somehow left out but he tried to hide his hurt feelings.
"We're here" he said tersely and got out. He helped a Eva out as well and he noticed that the boy was sleeping so she carried him in her arms.
"He'll need a tutor." He told her as they entered the town house.
"Thank you. "
The servants greeted them and one of the maids led Eva to a small chamber fit for the boy.
"Sweet dreams my little boy" she whispered in his hair and let him on the bed.
When she exited the room she was surprised to find her husband waiting for her.
"I have already sent word for my personal physician to come and take a look at his scar..."
"I don't think I could ever repay you for everything you've done for us. Thank you again."
"Don't thank me madame." He interrupted her.
"You will be able to repay me soon enough." With that he turned his back and left.
Eva was too grateful for everything he had done for them to think about her promise. She was going to do everything in her power to ensure that Gabriel was happy and safe. She had had an unhappy childhood herself and she had been disappointed enough by those who were supposed to protect her. She vowed that he would never know such treatment.
The following day the physician arrived and took a look at Gabriels wounds and scar.
"How is it, Mr. Fitz?" Christian asked.
The man shook his head as he closed the door.
"The wounds are healing nicely. He is out of the danger zone in that regard but... his scar. It's quite nasty. I wager it's not very old, maybe a few months at best."
"Is there something we could do... "
"I shall prescribe some aloe ointment, it's good for the healing but... I fear it's too late. We shall have to see how it reacts with the treatment."
"I see, thank you."
Mr. Fitz was preparing to leave when Eva came quickly after him.
"Mr Fitz" she called for him.
"Oh, good day my lady" Mr Fitz bowed and asked if she required something.
"Is there really no way for his scar to heal? Anything at all?"
"I fear not, my lady. As I have told your husband, it has been quite some time. I doubt that even the treatment I prescribed would have effect.
"Oh, I see..."
"If that is all I shall take my leave."
"Yes of course. Thank you very much."
She was full of disbelief... She had hoped he would not have to endure the stigma of his scar but...
"I'm sorry" she heard her husband from behind. He put his hand on her shoulder in a comforting manner.
"No..." she declared, her whole body shaking.
"He will be fine, I vow it."
"Eva, don't torment yourself any longer. ... There is nothing you can do, absolutely nothing."
"No..." she whispered still.
She straightened her back and left him standing there.
Christian did not know what to say to his wife. She was clearly very much affected by this news. Just as he was thinking of ways to comfort her, his servant announced a new visitor.
"My lord, the investigator is here"
"Show him to my office, please."
"Good day my lord" The man entered and bowed.
"Good day Mr Jenkins . I have briefed you on the matter in my letter but my wife has told me some new things that may be important to the case. Please sit." He motioned to the chair and Mr Jenkins took a seat.
"My wife says that she had heard the murderer threaten... my son."
"This changes things." The man said pensively.
"We could always have the suspects in the same room and have your wife recognize the voice."
"Yes, that's what I thought. That is, if we can find some suspects."
"I shall head over to the village and question the parents of the victim and possible witnesses."
"Thank you Mr Jenkins."
"I will keep you posted, my lord" The investigator rose and took his leave.
Christian had a look of consternation on his face. Ever since his marriage, problems seemed to abound... but in spite of everything he could not bring himself to regret it.
Another week passed but Mr Jenkins did not seem to find anything. Eva barely talked to Christian, spending all of her time with Gabriel. But the month was soon to be over and she had a promise to fulfill.
Eva should have been worried about the fact that there were only ten days left until the month was over, but all she could muster was resignation. She could not forget about Gabriel, her new son. She had to find something for his scar... The ointment that the physician had given him had removed some of the redness but the wound was still pretty horrible to look at. She suddenly thought about something that she had heard when she was younger. The maids had spoken of a woman who could do...magic. Unorthodox things. She was rumored to be a witch. Maybe for the right price she would be willing... bu how could she get in contact with the woman?
"Mary, could I ask you something that will not leave these walls?" She asked her lady's maid who was now doing her hair.
"Yes my lady, of course."
"Fo you know of a woman who...dabbles in the arts?"
"The arts, my lady?"
"Unnatural things? Eva added and Mary pursed her lips. She seemed reluctant to share that piece of information.
"Well?" Eva probed again.
"There is a woman... She lives on the outskirts..." the maid did not get to finish the sentence when Eva jumped out of her seat and told her effusively to take her to that woman.
She pocketed some pearls and told the footman she was going shopping.
They hired a carriage and her maid gave the instructions for the location. As they neared the outskirts, Eva was horrified by the dirt that enveloped the area.
They eventually reached their destination and her maid led her to a shabby house. Eva was quite afraid but she held her head high and tried to mask her fear. Mary knocked twice on the door and it opened on its own volition. This is more than creepy, Eva thought. They entered a long and dusty corridor until they arrived in front of a door.
"You shall have to go alone. I cannot help you anymore." Mary said and retreated.
Eva was frozen on the spot, looking at the door petrified.
"Come in!" A serene voice said.
She entered as if possessed by some force and came face to face with the most beautiful creature she had ever seen. She was small, even smaller than her, with fiery red hair and silvery eyes. She looked like a fae. She did not know what she had been expecting, maybe an old hag with a myriad of potions.
The little fae smiled at her and stepped forward, taking her hands. She was dressed in an emerald green gown that made her look even more ethereal. Her hands were cold to touch but their texture was the finest she had ever felt.
"Do not be afraid" the fae said, a twinkle of mischief in her eyes.
She led Eva to the table that stood in the middle of the room.
"Sit" she said and Eva obeyed.
The fae circled the table and sat on the other end of it.
"What brings you here?"
"I... I have heard about you." Eva said, mesmerised by the fae's eyes.
"Really?"
"There were whispers that you could do things... humanly impossible things."
"Those whispers may have been right."
The fae took her hands and turned them palms up. She was tracing the contours of her hand and every now and then she would frown.
"You've been dealt a bad hand." She whispered absently.
"People have harmed you. People you loved and trusted...."
"I see...an accident." She suddenly looked up and squinted on her.
"No... It hasn't happened." She said frowning.
"I see your soulmate" she smiled now. "You've met him, although.... you do not get along very well."
Eva nodded, thinking of Christian.
"Your ordeals are not over my dear, no, they are far from over..."
"Do you see a small boy?" Eva asked, thinking of Gabriel.
"Oh, I see more than one. Your marriage is sure to be productive" the fae chuckled.
"But that boy, the one you are interested in. Gabriel is his name isn't it?" She asked and Eva gasped.
If she had any doubts before they were no dispelled.
"Yes, yes, that is right."
"He's been through a lot, and danger awaits him. His father..." she traced a certain line. "Someone wants him dead." She said and Eva could see tears in the fae's eyes.
"I could never understand human cruelty" she whispered.
"He is a great boy, take care of him. His future is going to be a glorious one."
"Do you... do you think you could help him with his wound?"
The fae raised her eyes stared blankly for a moment.
"I cannot do much, I am sorry. I could heal his wound without a second thought but....His scar is part of his fate."
Eva sighed and took her hand.
"Surely you can't do anything?"
"I could, but it wouldn't be right. I am going to give you something to help it scar nicely but, I told you. It's his fate. He is going to go through a lot because of it, I won't sugar coat it for you, but it will lead him to become his destined self."
The fae disappeared in front of her, shocking Eva. The next second she was back.
"Here." She put into Eva's hand a little vial.
"Apply it on his wound twice a day for a week. It should help a bit"
"Thank you..."
"Scarlet." The fae smiled.
Eva liked the woman and hoped she would get to see her again.
"You will." She said knowingly.
"This isn't the last you will see of me, be sure"
"Oh, here." Eva was about to give her the pearls when Scarlet stopped her hand.
"It comes from the heart. It's fine" she smiled and Eva was instantly put at ease.
