Chapter 9: Chapter VIII

The following morning, Christian received a missive, requesting his immediate presence to one of his estates in Kent. It seemed that there had been disturbances of late and his people were growing restless. His estate in Kent was the only one that was in proper condition. When he had inherited the title, it already had a big debt attached to its name. Since Kent had been his childhood home and the home in which his parents had resided, most of the time, it had been the only one to be kept in a somehow acceptable state. He had already started the procedures to invest his wife's money and to start renovating his other estates. He wondered what his wife would think of his childhood home... He remembered the time when he had loved his parents, when he had been carefree as a second son, knowing that he would never have to take on the burden of a title. He remembered his mother... but the memory was a bitter one. She had played with his affection, never really caring for him. Hi Brother Arthur had been his father's favorite but he, he had delighted in being the only one with their mothers love and attention. He would always do whatever she asked, sometimes even making it possible to correspond with her lovers. He raked a hand through his hair and sat down on the chair in his office. He had been a fool and his actions had led to the deaths of four people. Two of them did not really matter since they had also been a catalyst.... but his brother and father? They had paid for his naivete.

"Hutchins"

"You've called, my lord?"

"Please notify my lady wife that we are to depart for Kent in the morning. I do not know how much time we shall stay there but have her prepare her trunks for a longer period of time."

"Yes, sir"

Eva was trying to read a book in the intimacy of her chambers. But the key word was tried. She could not make it past the first page no matter how much she tried. Her thoughts strayed to her husband and the kindness he had showed her. Granted they had started on the wrong foot but she had had no idea it would be such a nightmarish task for her to perform her widely duties. But she thought she was making progress. He had kissed her the other night and she had derived great pleasure prom it. She had felt giddy and carefree. The thought of that other man had been completely erased from her mind. Yes, she determined, she was making progress. A smile tugged at her lips as she remembered how he had listened to her... It was nice to have companionship.

"Christian" she tried his name on her lips, smiling.

"Christian" she tried again and she heard a knock at the door.

"Yes?" she hoped that...maybe it was her husband.

But unfortunately it was Hutchins, who entered and informed her of her husband's sudden decision to depart for the countryside. It was indeed a rushed decision and she could not think of a reason...but she was glad. She did not want to face the probing eyes of the Ton even after Christian's rebuke. It was altogether an ordeal and she already felt embarrassed as it was not to mention having to bear their presence and accusatory glances. She quickly notified her maid to pack her trunks while she started fussing around and making sure nothing was forgotten.

When she was pleased both with the luggage and with her overall appearance, she headed down for lunch.

Christian was waiting for her and as he took in the sight of her a smile tugged at his lips. She was like a ray of sunshine. He stood up and slightly bowed and she blushed. Two pink dots stained his wife's cheek as she took her seat, which he found very endearing.

"Have you readied your things" he asked, trying to break the ice as it looked she could not bring herself to speak.

"Yes...my lord. Yes I have" she said meekly. Was there something wrong, he wondered? He hadn't done anything wrong, had he? He might have been a bit cruel... or more than cruel in the beginning. Oh, fine, he had been cruel. He had judged her based on rumors only and he had sought relief in the arms of a doxy. But he had redeemed himself, if only a little bit the previous night. A frown marred his usual spectacular appearance as he pondered what the matter with his wife was. When he found no explanation, at least not a plausible one he decided to ask her directly.

"Eva," he called her and he realized this was the first time he had used her name.

"Yes. ..?" She asked, startled, and looked into his eyes.

"Have I done something to offend you?"

"No... It's nothing like that."

"Then why are you so...flushed?"

Unwittingly she raised her hands to her face and she reddened even more.

"Flushed? No, my lord... I do not think so"

"Christian"

"Eh?"

"Call me Christian"

"Oh... I am fine, Christian" she said once more as if trying to convince herself of that fact as well.

"Eva looks into my eyes." he demanded and she obeyed.

"Yes?"

"What is the matter?"

Eva had been having a hard time keeping a straight face ever since she had entered the room. The mere sight of her husband, not to mention his presence made her think of...of things. Unorthodox things. Things that she found disturbing and appealing at the same time. She felt hot and...frustrated. She did not know why... Well she knew why but she did not want to admit it to herself. Not yet at least. She wanted to know her husband better. To know his secrets, his longings, what he loved and what he hated, she wanted to know him all before she allowed herself to be...free.

But when he asked her what was wrong, she felt the need to lie, stunned that her inner turmoil could be so visible on her face.

"What is the matter?" It was the second time already. He did not believe her when she said she was perfectly fine. When she dared to look into his midnight blue eyes she found herself saying the truth.

"You."

"Me?" he asked incredulously

She made the mistake of looking at his lips and she licked her own in response.

"You bother me."

"Why"

"Because you make me hot…" she complained and for a second Christian just looked at her wide eyed. Then he started laughing.

Eva frowned and did not realize what was amusing about her statement. She had told him the truth...

"I make you hot?" he asked her again and she just nodded.

"Don't worry sweet the feeling is mutual" he gave her a loop sided grin and she did not feel hot anymore. She felt as though she was melting.

Eva was not comfortable with the direction this conversation was going so she quickly changed the subject.

"Why are we going to the countryside so fast?"

"I have received word that there have been some disturbances and the staffs as well as the renters are asking me to look into it."

"Disturbances? What do you mean by disturbances?"

"The letter did not get into much detail, but strange sounds have been heard at night and someone may be causing trouble."

"Good God, a thief?" She asked full of disbelief.

"I am afraid so... I need to look into the matter and give my people their comfort back."

"But I hope you won't be too sad that we will have to cut our stay in Town short"

"No, no, I have always loved the country side more than the town. And I can't wait to see your estate there" she said enthusiastically.

"Very well then, we shall depart at dawn"
