Chapter 4: Mr. Brummer

My new Latin teacher, Mr. Brummer, was the coolest teacher I have ever had. Even with my dyslexia and ADHD, I did not have much trouble listening in. It was difficult compare to the other students, but for me it was so much easier than other classes I have been in. He must one of the best teachers to make a boring subject tolerable. Anyways, he would always call on me in class to answer questions about mythology, almost as if he had taken a specific interest in me over any other student. Maybe it is because I was labeled as a problem child and he wants to try and "fix" me or "set my life on track". One day he asks me why we were learning about the Greek Pantheon. I said "To get a good grade in the class." Some of the people in the class laugh.

"While that is correct, it is not the answer I was looking for. You see, we are learning about this so that we can understand the past and where we come from. If we can understand our past, we can understand where everything in our culture comes from. In reality, the ancient Greeks have had more of an impact on modern society than many of the people who live during the modern era."

Mr. Brummer would always try to make points like this during his classes. It was never just the cold hard fact that came form the history and the mythology. It also had lessons and morals or insights to the stories that made them more interesting.

My favorite days in Mr. Brummer's class was the days where he will bring out real Greek and Roman weapons and armor. These days were really fun because he would act out the stories we were learning. One minute he would be Hercules fighting the Nemean lion. Or Achilles fighting side by side with Athena to defeat Hector during the Trojan war. Or Odysseus trying to sail home back to his wife and throne in Ithaca.

One day, I was out past the curfew the school set for all students. I walked past Mr. Brummer's classroom and saw him talking to Grover. Mr. Brummer said to Grover, "Do you know who his godly parent is, Grover?"

"No, I am not sure, but I do know that his godly parent is his father. He has a powerful scent. It may be possible that he is a child of one of the of three." Grover replied.

"That can't be possible. After all, both Thalia and Percy were born in this generation. How could there possibly be a third? It doesn't make sense. He is younger than Percy so the odds are that the prophecy is not about him, so why would his godly parent not identify him?" said Mr. Brummer.

"I couldn't begin to answer those questions. It is impossible to know the motives of the big three. What I do know is that Archy is powerful and will draw monsters to him unlike most demigods will ever see."-Grover

Hearing them say my name scares me a little. I mean, i know that I was purposefully going near Grover so he could identify me as a demigod to take me to camp, but it still came up unexpected that Mr. Brummer would be involved in this. That is what scared me. Having someone infiltrate the school just to spy on you is both creepy and scary if you were to think about it.

When I think about his lessons, they start to make sense. If he knew that the Greek Gods were very much real, then he would be very adamant about me learning all I could about the mythology of the Ancient Greeks.

I start to back away from the doorway as slowly as possible. I try to stay quiet but I worry that my breathing is too loud. As soon as I am far enough away, I run to my dorm room. By the time I reach my room, I am breathing heavily as I had sprinted as fast as I could to my room. I was scared and exhausted and I did not know what to do. I tried to calm myself down. After about ten minutes of improvised breathing techniques, I was finally able to become calm. Once I was able to accomplish this, I went to my bed and fell asleep.
