Chapter 35: Revealing the passage

'Where is the gate?' Guy asked. I could feel that his patience was wearing thin.

I saw a huge boulder to my right and thought that I could try to do what the little voice had suggested.

'You need to untie my hands for me to activate it,' I said in a soft voice, trying to appear weak. I even added one more groan and collapsed on the ground. He fell for it and untied me, still under the watchful gaze of Kutz. I could feel the weight of the knife in my pocket and limping towards the boulder, I thought of how to use it. If I activated the locket, Guy and Kutz were so close to me that they would have time to reach out for me and they could also be transported to where I went. I had to put some distance between us first.

'Aim for Guy's eye, this will slow him down. I will take care of Kutz.' I paused at this point, wondering why my little voice would say this. It took me one full second to understand that it was not the little voice who had been guiding me all this while. I had been reading Dave's thoughts. He must be nearby then. I surreptitiously tried to cast a quick glance around me, but couldn't do so without awakening the suspicion of the two werewolves.

'When you reach the boulder, lean against it and wait for Guy to come nearer. When he's close enough, stab him in the head. I'll take care of Kutz.'

I thought of how violent it sounded and felt hesitant, but I knew that I had to do something. Dave's and my life were at stake. So I did what I had been told and leaned on the boulder.

'What is it girl? Why did you stop?' He came closer as Dave had planned and I reached into my pocket, catching the handle firmly. As soon as he was close enough, I pulled it out, turned aroundand stabbed him in the face. The blade narrowly missed his eys, but opened a big gash from his cheekbone to his ears. He cried out in pain and recahed out his hand to cover the open wound. At the same time, Someone jumped from the darkness onto kutz and I heard the snap of bone breaking. Kutz fell lifless in front of me. With happiness surging in me, I leaped forward into the waiting arms of Dave. Apart from a bruise on his cheek he looked to be fine, until I heard him hiss in pain when my arm touched his forearm. I stepped back in horror to discover the bite wound he had on his forearm. Unlike mine which was healing, his was still bleeding.

'Jack bit you,' I whispered looking at his handsome face which was twisting in pain. The toxin must be in his bloodstream, causing the poisoning. I did not know whether my idea was going to work, but we had to try it. Taking the forearm which had been bitten and thrusting it in fron of Dave, I told him, 'Bite me, suck my blood, maybe it can heal you like it healed me.'

'I can't hurt you,' he gasped, before he doubled over with pain.

'You remember you told me that when you decide to bite me I would enjoy it,' I said looking at him earnestly. I pulled the neckline of my shirt away, revealing my neck to him. I reached out my hand and pulled his face to me, 'I don't want to lose you, so do it. Or I'll just slash my arm with the knife I know you have in your pocket and bleed on you.'

Dave exhaled softly, he was too weak to fight against me, I knew. He bent his head and I felt his warm breath fan my neck. He licked my neck with one long swipe of his tongue and it was as if the area was numbed. I felt the slight pressure of his cold fangs on my neck and I shivered at the contrasting temperatures. I closed my eyes in anticipation until I felt his fangs break the skin and penetrate my neck. The pain of the bite was immediately covered by the pleasure of the sucking motion. But soon, it stopped and Dave lifted his head, but not before licking my neck one more time.

He touched his forehead to mine and it was cold and clammy to the touch. A loud groan caught my attention. Guy. I turned to him and he had torn his shirt off and was tying it around his head in order to stop the blood flow. His large furry chest was truly impressive. At that moment, he was glaring at me with shock.

'How did you survive the toxin? Vampires are not immune to it.'

'You seemed to know everything about me, so how come you do not know this?' I asked him, trying not to look at his blood-soaked shirt and trying to forget that I was the cause.

Guy then looked at Dave. ' Your mother foiled my plans once and now it's the son's turn. Brilliant.' He then looked at Dave's hand with the bite mark. 'Jack got you, I see. I trained him well.'

'Well, he's dead now,' Dave stated in a flat tone, checking out my reaction. I put my hand on his shoulders, letting him know, without words, that I understood him now.

Guy was still staring at the wound, until he gasped and shouted, 'No, that's not possible.' I turned to see what got him so riled up and I saw that Dave's wound was healing slowly. It had worked, I thought, touching my neck where he had bitten me.

'You, how did you do this? Who are you?' he asked me.

'You said it yourself, Fira's daughter,' I replied.

'That woman killed my brother,' he spat out in a tone filled with hate. 'My brother Hans.'

For a moment, I felt confusion cloud my judgement. NO, it couldn't be that we were talking about the same Hans, were we? But how many werewolves were there called Hans and who happened to meet my mother?

'Hans Livingston?' I asked with apprehension.

'Yes, but he's dead now,' Guy said and the fight seemed to have gone out of him. If he hadn't tried to kill me, maybe I would have felt sorry for him.

'Hans was my father,' I told him, causing him to look at me in shock.

'No, this can't be. Vampires and werewolves cannot mate, they would die,' he retorted sharply.

'That's why my mother died and dad was so heartbroken that he gave up the will to live,' I said, looking down to hide my bright eyes, this truth still painful to bear. I felt a pressure on my hand and lifted my eyes to see Dave in front of me. He pulled me in a hug and I gratefully allowed myself to be enveloped by his arms.

'No, this can't be,' Guy repeated. 'You can't be my niece.'

'Get used to this idea, I'm not going to change my father's name to suit you,' I answered dryly.

'My, my, my, isn't that sweet? A family reunion. Can we now open the damned gate?' a voice rang out from the darkness. I knew that threatening voice, I had heard it many times before...
