Chapter 8: The Unexpected Uncontrollable Flirt

"Why didn't you wake me up if you saw Hunters? What did you do to them? Talk them to death?" I grin at Mom from across the booth in a Diner we come to whenever we're in town. She grinned and shrugged her shoulders limply.
" I ran circles around them and talked into the hollow trees!" We both laugh loudly.
After she went in the back room with Nicky I had moved to the pool table to watch the news when I heard some commotion and yelling. When mom came out I could tell out of the corner of my eye that she was crying. She went outside and I knew that she needed time to herself before we could head out to town.
It wasn't long before Nicky finally came out, her eyes all red and swollen, not to mention she moved like a robot just learning how to walk. I try not to get too involved. I know those two will make up, they always do, but it didn't make it any less painful to watch. I've known for a long time that Nicky liked Mom, and that Mom truly loved Nicky. I just never understood why they were so distant towards each other.
Mom hasn't been with anyone since dad died, that I know of anyway. And Nicky… Well Nicky has never really cared for other people. She told me once that she was married but that it only lasted a few months. I never got a lot of the details as to why but from her scars and stories I kinda just put things together.
Nicky never said a word after she came out even as we were leaving, and the ride here was about the same. Just silence. It wasn't till Mom had to talk to the guy ordering the ice did she start speaking again. So here she is, same old Mom, here at the same old diner we come to every other week.
"There you guys are!!" Mom and I look over to see a tall woman with blonde hair, red lips, and light blue eyes, dressed in a pink 50's waitress get-up with a bright smile on her face.
"Hey Miss Jane!! How have you been!" Mom smiles up at Jane. When Jane sees Mom her smile falters for a split second and she looks at me and I shake my head at her.
"I've been good, but I'm even better now that I get to see you." She winks at Mom. I can't help but laugh.
'Sorry Jane, she's taken and I aim to make it stay that way.'
"Oh hon that sure does MY day a lot better, especially coming from a beautiful woman like you." Mom gives her crooked side smile causing Miss Jane to turn red and my jaw to drop.
'What… the hell just happened?!'
Mom has never, not once flirted with anyone except Nicky before. Something must have really happened. Something bad. Even so, I don't care, my blood began to boil.
"Oh my Miss Wol-" Mom raised her hand to cut Jane off.
"Just call me Grace, and thank you so much for everything Jane. You have no idea how much I've needed to see your face." At this point I was so angry my teeth started to chatter and I tried to take long deep breaths to stay calm. I didn't have to look over at Jane to know she was as red as a tomato at this point.
"Well… G-Grace… I hope your lunch was to your liking… oh and don't worry about the check…. It's on me today." I don't blame Miss Jane, Mom is a charmer, but I've never seen her use it except for on Nicky before and I didn't like how she was using it now.
"Awe thank you Jane. That means so much! Are you sure? I can pay. Here." Mom handed the money to Jane but she declined.
"But…." Jane leaned down and whispered in Mom's ear, and in return Mom had an expression on her face I had never seen before along with that killer smile.
"You bet. M'lady." Mom's expression never changed even as Jane was long gone. By now all I wanted to do was wrap my hands around Mom's neck, which scared me because I've never wanted to hurt her or anyone for that matter in my entire life, but at the moment it doesn't seem like a bad idea.
I waited until we left the Diner to confront Mom. She was staring at the ground somewhere far off in her mind.
"Mom… what was that in there?"
"Hmm?" She didn't take her eyes off the ground.
"With Miss Jane." She didn't react, she just kept staring at the ground as we walked. "Listen okay I don't know what happened between you and Nicky but that's not right what you just did in there." At the mention of Nicky's name her body flinched. Yep something definitely happened. "Mom-"
"Enough Kai. I get that you and Nicky are close. By all means you stay close I don't care. I'm not going to be." I stopped completely shocked by her words. She walked on ahead of me. My blood finally bubbled over.
"STOP!! Just stop!!" But she didn't stop, she wasn't even listening, she's gone too far away in her own head. 'Fuck it!'
"You love her!!" She stopped instantly. "You love her but you won't take any action! You love her but you won't tell her! You're so terrified of something that you won't step up and take the responsibility for letting her fall in love with you!!" She stayed still, her back facing me. " And the moment something goes wrong you run to the next one!! Just stop! It's been over 16 years Mom!! 16 years!! And now you have a shot at happiness again!!! So stop fucking blowing it!! Tell her how you feel! Show her!" I clench my fits tighter, staring at the back of her head. "Stop running away…"
We stand there for a long time, unmoving waiting for something to happen. I couldn't take it anymore. I can't be here with her right now.
"I'm going to the library. Let me know when you're ready to go home." I walked away knowing the weight of my words, and even harder, the last words I said had an unspoken meaning I hoped wouldn't come to pass.
