Chapter 4: Warmer Than The Past

GRACE

The morning air bit my nose as Kai and I threw extra hay in the horse stables and cattle troughs. It will take the rest of the day for us to get the ice, load it, and take it to town.

It's spring, but up on the mountain snow still clings to the ground and the air is still nippy. Flowers bloom in the meadow behind King's second cabin, up the trail aways from Kai and I's small hut of a cabin. We only go to King's cabin when it's really cold or if Kai wants to study his workbooks because it has power and electricity, other than that we avoid it as much as possible, well I do. Kai is welcome to go anytime he wants, I can't afford to be plugged anymore by the memories that still haunt me about my past.

King is Kai's father, his real name was Edmen Locus Wolf, he was a sweet and kind soul, with jet black hair, piercing green eyes and skin kissed so much by the sun he could melt snow. He and Kai look so much alike that it's hard to tell he's actually my son, the only features he got from me is his nose and the yellow in his eyes. King died just before Kai was born though so he doesn't really know how much he looks like his father. It's been sixteen years now since King's death and when he did I was left young, scared, and alone with a baby on the way. I was only fourteen, too young for anything. I couldn't work, I only had 200 dollars to my name, and refused to use King's money. If I was alone then I would do this on my own. I got myself into it, so I had  the capability to do it on my own.

"Ready mom?" I looked at Kai and smiled nodding.

"Let's go!" I reply with more enthusiasm than I actually have, with each passing day I have less and less energy, but try to stay moving so Kai won't notice. I was exhausted and haven't fully slept in days, maybe years, but I refuse to let my son see it. Honestly I had no idea how I was able to fight off those hunters this morning, but because of that I was even more tired than before. Usually Kai is there to do the more scary side of things as well as the chasing, I'm just the voice of reason to keep his more darker side at Bay, which is another more unfortunate feature he got from yours truly. That side of me is one Kai has never seen before and I'd like to keep it that way, for that reason only is why I'm reluctant to tell him about this morning. I look to the sky trying to keep my thoughts from consuming me when I notice Kai staring at me with those sad puppy dog eyes. I glare at him. "What is it?" He shakes his head with a smile and marches on toward the trail that leads to the icy cap of the mountain.

It takes a few hours to walk to the top, but we get there with our tools at the ready once we finally reach the ice capped peak. We force our cold bodies and frozen hands to chisel and cut through the ice. 'damn it's cold!' I blow into my hands then force them to make the final cut through the ice.

"It's easier today." Kai states as we finish.

"That's because it's warmer today than in the past." I say in the same tone. He stops and looks at me wide eyed.

"Won't it melt faster?" I grin.

"Not if we're quick." he groans and I laugh out loudly.

"Come on you silly-willy." I jump down off the ice, after tying our ropes around it, and flip it over slowly. We carefully lift the massive hunk of winter onto our backs, strap it, and carry it down the mountain.
