Chapter 48: AN APPEAL TO CONSCIENCE
Phyllis observed Denzel's attitude towards Melanie for a while and noticed some absurdity but she couldn't figure out what was wrong until a while. She also noticed that Melanie felt uncomfortable whenever Denzel was around though she had started dressing seductively by wearing clothes that revealed her breasts and skimpy clothes that also revealed her curves. There were times that she had noticed that she wasn't even wearing underwear because her buttocks shook abnormally when she walked. Though she had taken notice of these attitudes and knew that her marriage was under attack, she decided to act smartly so that she wouldn't be found wanting. She initially thought she should rent an apartment for Melanie since her admission letter was in and she would be starting school soon but she decided to hold on with the renting since that would even give them the opportunity to have an affair without her notice. She then decided to appeal to their conscience since that's the only tangible thing she could do at that moment.
She took them out on one Friday evening to a restaurant where there was a live band performance. She invited Amelia because she wanted to be sure that she wasn't the only one seeing the attraction and the cry for attention between Denzel and Melanie. When they had all relaxed and settled down in the restaurant and waiting for their order, Phyllis asked Melanie to follow her to the washroom since they had an emergency concerning work to be attended to. She took Amelia to a corner of the restaurant so that they could spy on Melanie and Denzel. They saw Melanie touching the back of Denzel's hand which was on the table, while he politely took his hands away from the table. She intentionally dropped the her handkerchief on the floor and bent down to pick. Her buttocks and vagina could be seen when she bent down. Denzel no longer felt comfortable so he switched seats.
"What the hell is that? Is she trying to seduce Denzel? For how long has this been going on? Women and their nonsense. Does she remember who Denzel is and what you as a wife have done for her? Is this how she wants to pay you? Really? Melanie fumed with anger and quickly got up to attack Melanie but Phyllis stopped her and asked her to watch her handle her. Phyllis and Melanie joined them on the table while Phyllis was all smiles pretending she had seen nothing, Amelia had frowned because she just couldn't pretend she hadn't seen what Melanie did. Denzel noticed the change in Amelia's mood and out of concern asked her what was wrong with her. Phyllis quickly replied that, one of the workers had misbehaved and that was making her angry. Amelia smiled sarcastically at Phyllis' response because she had lied.
After some few minutes while they were eating Phyllis started a conversation. "Deee, do you remember Sarpomaa, my cousin?" My uncle just called to tell me that she is suffering from a mental breakdown. She's been admitted at the Komfo Anokye Hospital for treatment but she's been confessing to a lot of bad things she's done
and they think that's the cause of her breakdown. "What do you mean?" Denzel asked. The family suspects she has been cursed by one of the people she's offended or it's karma that's being a bitch to her. Phyllis replied. "What at all did she do for them to reason like that? Isn't it stress or depression rather? Why will they think it is a curse or the evil she did that's haunting her?" Amelia asked.
"According to her, during her national service days, she rented a room from a woman who treated her like a daughter. She fed and clothed her because she liked her. Sarpomaa started an affair with the woman's son and later her husband. She was had an affair with the woman's son and husband at the same time and they were all having sex with her. She started having an affair with one of the tenants who found out she was sleeping with both the son and the husband of the landlady. The guy got angry and reported the incident to the landlady who confronted my cousin about it but she denied it until the woman caught her and collapsed. She suffered stroke and died shortly after that." Phyllis told them. Amelia and Denzel both shouted "what?" "That's sheer wickedness! How could she do that? Denzel asked.
Melanie was quiet and stared at Phyllis for a while and then bowed her head in shame. "Sarpomaa says she also had an affair with one of her mother's cousins, which according to the Akan tradition is an abomination and it's believed to have some spiritual consequences." Phyllis said. " Hmmmm! What at all does she want in this world? These girls with their desire for quick money and luxurious lifestyle, ehn? Now see what's she's going through. Even if those things aren't the cause of her sickness, the thought of them is even worsened it." Amelia said with pity and anger at the same time.
"Why are you angry, Ame? You're yet to even hear the worse. She lied on one of her boyfriends because she wanted the guy to marry her and he asked for time because he was going to the School of Ministry to be trained as a Pastor so she went to his Church leadership to report to them that the guy has been sleeping with her. The church ex communicated the guy from the church so the guy called on my uncle to talk to Sarpomaa to go the church leadership to retract her statement but she refused to so the guy left the church and no one ever heard from him again. "Denzel, with tears in his eyes said " how can someone be this wicked to this extent? So sleeping with a father and son wasn't enough for her so she decided to ruin and disgrace a good soul like this guy? My father always told me to fear women if I wanted to live longer. I have never understood that until now. Wow! Wicked world! Amelia handed the tissue box to him so that he would wipe his tears.
"Now, this should serve as a warning to any young lady who intends to live her life going after men especially people's husbands should be careful. The evil men do really lives after them. And if I were a man, I would stay away from women after hearing this. What a wicked world." Amelia said. Phyllis and Amelia looked at both Melanie and Denzel and noticed that the message was well communicated. Denzel was moody while Melanie sat remorsefully quiet. Denzel request that they go home because he was sad but Phyllis requested for some few minutes to change Beryl's diaper in the washroom and requested Amelia to help her.
They burst into laughter as soon as they entered the washroom. "How did you know that would work? I have known you to be smart but you have exceeded my expectations. Congrats, Sis." Amelia happily told her. They went to the car since Denzel and Melanie were waiting outside. They drove home in silence and Phyllis knew she had solved that problem.
