Chapter 46: JUSTICE SERVED, PEACE RESTORED
Denzel left earlier than usual to his office so that he would make arrangements for the trial so Phyllis packed his breakfast into a lunchbox for him. The three women also prepared to leave earlier than the scheduled time so that they would not be late. Amelia did their make ups and made sure Melanie dressed elegantly for the trial. Melanie wore a black fitting floral lace dress which was beneath her knee with red pencil heels, red big stud pearl earrings, cuff bracelets, a black Rolex dress watch and a red purse to match. When Melanie stood in front of the mirror to check how she looked, she smiled and said to herself, "poverty is an evil bitch. Just look at how beautiful I am. These things especially the makeup and hair has totally transformed me." Amelia burst into laughter when she heard her.
Phyllis and Amelia encouraged her in the car until they got to the courthouse. Melanie decided to say hello to her husband when they got to the courthouse but as she walked towards his direction, he began to shiver because he thought she was one of those child protection advocates. Melanie took her glasses off and smiled at him to shake his hands but he stood still still shivering until she tapped him on his shoulders and said, "Bright, it's me,Melanie". He lifted his eyes to look at her to see if it was true and to his surprise, the elegant lady standing in front of him was his wife. His family especially his mother couldn't believe her eyes because Melanie was totally transformed. She sacked Melanie from there and told her never to come close to her family especially Bright again so Melanie left since Bright didn't defend her. Bright's mother shouted "Ashawo" (which means prostitute) after her but she pretended she didn't hear her.
Denzel came to call them to the court room since it was almost time for the trial to begin. The bailiff shouted "all rise" as soon as the judge entered the court room and everyone rose to his or her feet. They all got seated when the judge took her seat behind the bench. When the case began, the bench clerk read out the charges and informant charged the accused with rape and presented her findings to the judge. The proceedings began and upon interrogations and questioning of both the accused and Melanie and their witnesses it was establish that Koomson, Bright's brother was guilty of the charges against him and the judge sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The judge didn't want to drag the case because the evidence against the accuse was strong and besides he had pleaded guilty. Bright's mother threw herself on the floor and began to weep but Bright was not bothered because he thought they were all paying for wrongly raising his brother. Besides his daughter whom he suffered to get is now dead and he cared less about his brother or
mother at that time. Melanie requested to have a talk with him and they scheduled for the next day.
Melanie couldn't stop crying when they got home because she thought she would be at peace after the trial but she didn't feel peaceful enough to stop worrying about the loss of her daughter and what Bright's mother was also going through. She also felt that her husband's family had been torn apart because of the incident and the court case. She cried herself to bed that day without eating because she had lost her appetite. Denzel, Phyllis and Amelia discussed the proceedings at the court and they were amazed at how the judge and prosecutor were. The ladies also congratulated Denzel for a good work done and winning the case. They watched an episode of how law and order before they went to bed.
When the woke up the next morning, the house was cleaned and organized with breakfast and a note on the table. Phyllis read it out loud and it was Melanie informing them of her visit to her husband's house for a discussion. They were all worried about her and what her motive was so they called her phone severally but it was switched off. Amelia and Denzel left for their various offices while Phyllis stayed back with Beryl.
Melanie's mother in law tried to sack her from the house but Bright came to her defense and asked his mother to go out if she was uncomfortable with her presence since he was the one who paid their rent. He took Melanie to their bedroom and served her water and a juice but she politely declined them. She asked him how he's been feeling and how he was coping with the loss of their daughter. He broke down into tears and couldn't talk for a while so she embraced him and before she realized they were in deep kisses and had both lost control of themselves.

" Honestly, I'm not sure of my feelings for you anymore. Besides we are still going to go through all that we went through repeatedly because your family is still living with us. I told you to get us a new place while they stayed here but you refused, saying I wanted to break your family. How do I continue to stay with people who don't respect me or treat me like their in law? How do I go to the living room where I will be constantly reminded of my late daughter and her pains? How would I develop here? You don't want me to go back to school because you say someone might snatch me from you or I will divorce you when I complete school and find a job. Honestly tell me you would stay in this kind of marriage if you were me. I know you've learnt your lesson and would make corrections when you find another woman but for now, let me go."

He broke into tears which got her mother running to their bedroom but he shouted at her and sacked her from the room telling her that she was part of his problem with Melanie. Melanie packed all her things and left her ring on the table and left. Her mother in law was happy she was leaving. She took a lid and began to hit it and shouted Ashawo while following her. She got a cab and went to a friend's house to leave her things with her and promised to come back for them after she had settled.
She went back to the Mansfords residence and when she got there Phyllis was relieved but angry with her especially for switching her phone off. She apologised to her for making her worried. Just as she was about to narrate what happened, Amelia walked in annoyed because she was also worried and couldn't concentrate on anything so she had rescheduled all her appointments for the day. Melanie apologised to them and told them what had happened including the sex. They burst into laughter and called her wicked for doing that. She told them, that she felt peaceful now that she had divorced him. They went to the Jivendi Restaurant in the Kumasi City Mall to eat and celebrate her strength as a woman who had endured all that pain and cheered her unto a new beginning. Amelia asked her to start work in the coming week in her office. Phyllis and Melanie thanked her for the offer. They went shopping and rushed home because Phyllis had to prepare food for her hubby's supper. Denzel preferred home made food to outside made especially restaurants because he claimed they were too spicy. They bought few items to continue their celebrations at home.
