Chapter 23: THE MOTIVE
Anyone who ever knew Mr. Richards' relationship with Denzel was surprised at the father-son bond between them. They loved each other dearly and sometimes even his daughter and wife tend to be jealous at the beauty of their relationship. Some people especially Mrs. Richards suspected Denzel to be Mr. Richards son because she saw her husband in Denzel and for her that was too much of a coincidence.
But truth be told, Denzel was truly Mr. Richards son born out of wedlock. Nobody knew this apart from Denzel's biological mother, Mr. Richards and Mrs. Jones, the woman that raised Denzel. Mrs Jones' husband didn't even know about this because she had him before Mr. Jones married her. Denzel grew up believing that Mrs. Jones was his biological mother and Mr. Jones his stepfather because his father was said to have died even before he was born. Mr. and Mrs Jones treated and cared so well for him that, he never for once doubted that Mrs. Jones wasn't his mother.
Mr. Jones gave Denzel to Mrs. Jones to raise because Felicity, Denzel's mother suffered a mental illness when Mr. Richards family forced him to marry Mrs. Richards because they were family friends and had been betrothed to each other even before they grew up. Both Mr. and Mrs Richards parents were wealthy and influential business moguls who were friends for so many years and decided to get their children married to sustain their friendship but Denzel fell in love with Felicity and was ready to marry her but his family threatened to disown him if he married Felicity and he broke up with her.
Felicity went into labour few days after Mr. Richards got married to Bridget, Amelia's mother but she didn't come out of delivery due to some complications during her delivery. The hospital called Mr. Richards when she died because she used him as her emergency contact. Fear of his family and his wife drove him to give Mrs. Jones the baby. He bought a house and a car for her and also gave her money whenever she needed it especially for the baby. Mr. Richards paid huge amount of money as salary to Mrs. Jones for a long period of time until she decided to not take money for catering for Denzel because she had grown to love him. They both agreed to never disclose that to anyone just to protect Denzel. This is a secret they both had protected with their lives and are willing to do anything to continue protecting it.
Mr. Richards therefore was bent on finding the motive of his Accountant's actions towards Denzel and Phyllis because he thought there was someone behind what his Accountant was doing. He therefore was very keen on getting information on his Accountant but no one had anything on him since he was a very secretive and guarded person. A day to the trial, he got a call from the police requesting to see him at the hospital. When he went he was told that his Accountant requested to see him because he was in a critical condition due to the beatings he received from some inmates.
The Accountant started crying when he saw Mr. Richards because he was remorseful for what he had been doing against him. Mr. Richards sat next to him on his bed but couldn't look him in the eye or touch him because he was hurt and angry. The Accountant apologised to him for all that he had done against him because he had been good to him. Mr. Richards didn't only give him a house and a car, he also pays the school fees and medical bills of his children as well. He again paid for all his ACCA tuition fees and paid for every resource including books he needed to learn, write and pass his ACCA exams to be awarded the certificate of a chartered Accountant. So the Accountant owed him a lot especially loyalty and gratitude but human as he was he betrayed Mr. Richards out of selfishness.
The Accountant requested him to allow the police to excuse them so that they could talk. When the police left, he apologised to Mr. Richards for all the wrong he had done to him and his family. He told Mr. Richards that, he had been having an affair with his wife for past three years. It started when Mrs. Richards invited him to the house when he and Amelia went on a business trip to China. When he got to their house, the maid showed him to Mrs. Richards study and he knocked at her door. Mrs Richards asked him to come inside but when he went inside, he wanted to come out but she quickly closed the door and asked him to come closer to her. He didn't refuse because he was afraid she would cry rape if he did so he played along with her until he losr control and fucked her.
Few months later, she visited him at home and they had sex again. It became frequent and has been continuously been going on all this while since he was divorced and his children are schooling outside their state. Mrs Richards taught him to steal from Richards International and shared the money equally among themselves. They also smuggled cocaine and other drugs into their state via Richards International's cargo lines. Your wife told me he suspected Denzel was your son but wasn't sure until she overheard you in a heated arguement on phone with Mrs. Jones over telling Denzel the truth but you denied because you still felt it was too early for him or everyone else to know. She never discussed what she heard with you because she was afraid of the outcome but three days after the call, your personal lawyer who happened to be her cousin informed her that you have shared your property among him and Amelia and you have even appointed him the overall boss in your absence so she decided to steal from you before you die since you had been sick for a while.
Phyllis checked the Accounts books and cross checked with the bank statement and realised things weren't reconciling so he started investigating me and was able to gather strong information about me, that's why I tempered with her car brakes when she visited my office. I did it when I asked her to excuse me take my car to the mechanic because I needed much time for that. We decided to contract someone to kill her when she was discharged but unfortunately we mistook Denzel for her when he drove them to the Airport because she was driving Phyllis' car but their gun missed him. We decided to stop seeking for his life until we hear he was also conducting investigations into me after he realised that Phyllis had gathered good information on me.
He also got tangible evidence of my illegal activities so he had to be killed to protect my secrets. Your wife didn't want me to attack Denzel but I had to do that for us. He cried for sometime before the doctors asked Mr. Richards to leave the patient to rest while the police continued to guard him. Mr. Richards couldn't go home that day, he slept in a hotel and called his security men to guard and protect both Phyllis and Denzel well. He instructed the doctors attending to them at home to cry fowl so that they would admit both Phyllis and Denzel at the hospital for their own safety. He intended to find a secured place for them when tre doctors take them out of his house. He asked the doctors to get them out of his house so that he wouldn't raise his wife's suspicions.
