Chapter 5: THE BROKEN TRUST
Phyllis and Dennis started struggling with their relationship after he mentioned Felicia, his ex girlfriend to her. Phyllis asked him the reason he broke up with her and he narrated to her, saying " I loved Felicia and our relationship was blooming until i realized Felicia was lazy and demanding. She leaves her dirty plates in my room whenever she eats in my absence. She was also demanding lots of money from me including her tuition fees and pocket money since she was in college and it had become unbearable for me so i decided to break up with her when i found out she was cheating on me with a guy in college. She thought i wasn't serious about the breakup since that wasn't their first but she took it serious when she realized you and I are together."
Phyllis didn't believe Dennis had completely broken things off with Felicia because she had encountered a similar situation before. She used to date Sam who was also a Director in one of their branches. Sam changed towards her few months into the relationship. He avoided her until, she called him one evening with her father's phone number which was unknown to him. She provoked him to tell her what was going on with their relationship only for him to tell her that, his ex girlfriend is pregnant for him and his father insists he marry her and he's confused as the pressure being mounted on him was high. She hanged up and never spoke to him again.
As she was going through this difficult situation, one of her friends introduced her to Richmond, a gentleman who worked in their office complex. He would call her early morning to check up on her and then send her food during their lunch breaks. They sometimes even ate together and would walk her home and call her every night to talk her to sleep. As time went by, he asked her to be his girlfriend and she accepted because she had become attached to him.
When the people in their office complex saw they were dating, most of them warned Phyllis to stay away from Richmond since he was a chronic womanizer and an opportunist but she didn't listen until Richmond started stealing and taking loans from her without paying. He also started to abuse her verbally and emotionally but always had a way of making her forgive him. She didn't want to leave because of her failed relationships and also because she didn't listen to the warnings of the people around.
After two years of being with Richmond, she had the shock of her life, she found out that Richmond had impregnated a lady in their office complex and has had two kids with two different women in the course of their relationship. She was heartbroken and had to go on leave for a whole month just to heal. Though he went to her house to apologise to her, she didn't take him back because she saw her to be as dangerous as a psychopath is, if he could do all those deeds while they were together and working in the same complex without her ever knowing then she doesn't know what more was hidden and what worse thing he could do again if she accepted him so she ended things with him.
She swore to not get into any serious relationship after breaking up with Richmond since she wasn't lucky with men. She concentrated on recovering from her heart break and career without paying attention to any man until she saw Dennis. Phyllis couldn't trust Dennis anymore because of her past experiences and therefore began to doubt him and pick fights with him over every thing she couldn't understand.
They could now go days without talking to each other until one of them apologised and it was mostly Dennis doing the apologies. On one late evening, Dennis called Phyllis after being silent to each other for over a period of two weeks. She didn't want to pick at first but she picked after the phone rang for sometime. He told her, he had been attacked by armed robbers and had been robbed of a huge amount of money he went to withdraw from the bank for his boss and didn't know what to do. She told him to report to the police even though it was raining. She insisted to get a cab to see him but he refused saying it was too late in the evening and dangerous for her as a young woman to come out alone. He called her when he got home after making a report with the Police.
Early in the morning, Abraham called Phyllis to inform her that , the board of directors have decided that Dennis paid the lost money since he was attacked after office hours and he wasn't supposed to be with the money in town at that time. Phyllis called Dennis to inform him about the decision the board had taken and she promised to take a loan to pay for it for him. Phyllis took a loan for him and asked him to pay into his company's account so that he would give a copy of the deposit slip to Abraham. Phyllis then called Abraham to inform him about Dennis' decision to refund the lost money but when Dennis found out she's informed Abraham, he got angry and fought with Phyllis about it. He stopped calling her and picking her calls until two weeks to Christmas.
Dennis called Phyllis to come to his house. He handed a gift bag to her when she went and it contained a beautiful white dress, a pair of shoes and a pair of block heels plus three sets of dressing bags to match as her Christmas gift. She was so grateful and decided to spend the night with him since she had missed him and they hadn't been together in a long while but he refused and packed all her bowls for her to go home with since he had finished eating all the food she stored in them for him. He told her to not cook for him again until he requested her to and all she could do was to nod her head without any words but with her eyes full of tears.
She sadly took the things and walked out of his house with tears in her eyes. She was sad because she realized Dennis didn't want her to stay over or keep the bowls there for pick up on another day because of Felicia. College was on Christmas break and she felt the lady would be home any moment from then. She sobbed bitterly as she sat in a cab home and cried till she fell asleep when she got home.
She called him to thank him for the gifts but he didn't pick the call and never returned the call. They both stopped talking and it seriously affected Phyllis. She was deeply troubled and depressed as she couldn't talk to anyone about it because they had kept their relationship a secret.
She called Sam, her ex boyfriend to talk to him since he was the only one he could trust. Sam told her to go to Dennis' house to talk to him and if she happens to meet Felicia there, then her suspicions would have been cleared but she was too scared of the what would happen to her if she met Felicia there so she didn't go.
Phyllis went to Anarisa's house to give Dennis' Christmas presents to her for them to be delivered to him since he didn't want to see her. When Anarisa took the presents to him, she met Felicia in Dennis' room and left as soon as he gave the presents to her. She later called Phyllis to inform her about the delivery and Felicia. She didn't know Dennis and Phyllis were in a relationship that's why she informed her about Felicia's presence because she's always been aware of their relationship and thought Phyllis and Dennis were just close friends.
With her heart broken, she deleted his number from his phone book. She also deleted all their text and voice messages from her phone because she didn't want to be tempted to call or send him any messages. She was protecting her pride and heart from possible heartbreaks again.
Anarisa organised a Christmas dinner and invited Phyllis. She also invited Dennis as well since they were all friends. Dennis called Phyllis to talk to her to stop her from going to the party with the excuse that it would start late and it's dangerous for her to go out of her house that late but Phyllis knew he was preventing her from clashing with Felicia at the dinner.
She didn't go because she didn't want to be humiliated by an uncouth woman who has got nothing to lose. She missed the dinner just to protect her honour. Anarisa called her in the morning and she was angry with her but she managed to calm her down with an excuse of her allergic rhinitis which is severe during the cold season. When Anarisa, calmed down, she complained about how Felicia almost ruined her dinner because she got into a serious brawl with Dennis and it took the intervention of Abraham to stop Felicia from creating worse scenes since they had caught everyone's attention but nobody also seemed to know what triggered their brawl so Dennis had to leave the dinner. Phyllis cried her heart out on the phone and told Anarisa about her relationship with Dennis. She was quiet for sometime and comforted her. When Phyllis had calmed down, Anarisa advised her and told her to stay away from Dennis since he wasn't faithful in his relationships. She asked Phyllis to spend the rest of the holidays with her so that she and her children would keep her company till she resumes work.
That was a vacation to help her get over Dennis. She agreed and moved to Anarisa's house for a while till she resumed work. Anarisa's children were helpful to her recovery since they were always playing with her. She resumed work from the Christmas holidays refreshed though she was still in love with Dennis.
