Chapter 13: ANTON, THE NEW AUTOPSY ASSISTANT
Its been a year already since Mikael and Santina had first started their investigation on the mysterious murders taking place at District 12
And over the span of these past few months that they had been working together, the two had become a lot closer than how they already were.
Especially so since their individual work had now both taken a turn into the study of violent crime. Which was quite nostalgic for both of them because it somehow reminded them of their past, way back when Sebastian was still alive and with them.
'TICK TOCK!.... TICK TOCK!'
It was the sound of the rain rattling on the roof as though stones pattering on a gazebo.
"See? I told you to bring an umbrella with you if you wanted to go out for the night."
Despite the heavy beating of the rain on the roof as well as the steady thumping of the music blaring from her loud surround stereo system, Santina was still able to hear the sound that Mikael made as he slowly opened the door and came into the room.
Mikael was not sure how she did that, but he still replied to her.
"Indeed, the weather outside is foul."
He agreed to her while removing his jacket that had been drenched by the rain as well as his sneakers that had been soak from the knee-deep flood outside.
"Have you met Anton on your way here?"
Mikael could hardly understand Santina's muffled voice and he could only make out a few words from what she asked him.
"Anton who???"
He asked back.
"Geez! The one I told you before? The handsome young man who found our next body at the dumpsite?"
Santina replied, but she soon realized that the surgical mask she wore over her nose and mouth was muffling her warm and comforting voice so she decided to remove it in the meantime
"Ohhh... I see. Is it the same guy we met last day? The one you introduced to be your former student at med school who decided to drop out in his second year?"
"Affirmative. It is him."
"What did you say the reason why he dropped out again???"
"Well, apparently, I found out that Anton was just being pressured by his family to finish a medical course and become a doctor. Although in reality, all that he ever wanted to do was to become a musician. But as of the moment, he still had not quite figured out what kind of music he wanted to play. Since he ran away from home and have no place to go, he decided to do volunteer work on an orphanage in exchange for free lodging, and during his free time, he used to conduct free music lessons with the kids at the dumpsite. That was how he found our victim."
Santina was patient enough to tell Mikael all about it for the second time around although it was just two days ago since when she told him the same thing and the other party just probably forgot about it.
"He was the same student that gave me headaches before because his mom kept on calling me day after day ever since he ran away from home and dropped his schooling. Remember Mrs. Perez? The one I am talking with over the phone the same day that you came to my office to ask for my help? It was his mom."
She added afterward hoping that by giving him more hints, Mikael would be able to connect more dots so he would be able to recognized Anton faster next time.
"Hmm... I see. And by the way, I must say, it was truly so nice of Anton to think about conducting free lessons with those kids at the dumpsite since most of the families there normally could not exactly afford to send their child to formal schools. To be honest, that young lad indeed has the face of an idol. So I was surprised that he used to be a med student. He does not look like one."
Mikael nodded his head afterward and offered his commendation towards the other party after a while.
"Well, he was not exactly into it either. As I have told you, he had only gone to med school because his family left him with no choice."
"And would you care to explain why exactly we are talking about this guy right now???"
"Haven't I told you about it already?? He will be my autopsy assistant from now on."
