Chapter 58: Flash Marriage?

Lucy sat on the swivel chair feeling dejected. It has been a tiring day for Lucy. Both her mental and physical felt so drained.

Mike has been kind enough to bring her here to his office in the USGS just to distract her from thinking too much about her mother and sisters disappearance.

"Well, probably your mom and sister are out for something important. Don't be too sad..." Mike patted Lucy's head as he consoled her.

He had never saw Lucy this sad before. He would rather see the crying her instead of this emotionless lady. She felt so distant, yet she is here in his temporary office seating in his swivel chair.

Lucy bowed down her head, hiding her tearful eyes. She rotated her leg in circles, creating a circular pattern on the carpet.

"You know, I am 20 this year according to the western calendar. My mom, always told me I am already an adult, 21 years old this year if I were to follow the lunar calendar."

Tilting her head up, she looked at the standing Mike next to her. She smiled coyly at Mike. Mike's hand was still on her head, when she said to him, "I could get married without anyone's approval, you know..."

"Hmm, you are right. You could get married now if you want to." Mike said to Lucy matter of factly.

Jane tried to read Mike's expression closely from her position. She wanted to know if Mike already has someone in his mind or not. From his expression, if he already has someone in his mind, it looks like whoever was in his mind, it was not her.

Mike looks like he did not mind at all if she got married to someone else.

Lucy felt a sudden relief washed over her heart. She always felt some kind of fluttering feeling whenever she is alone with Mike.

She always thought that Mike harbors some feelings for her. Whenever she thinks of the probability of Mike liking her, she felt so weird, and it scares her.

They both have kissed, and he is always nice to her, but he never mentioned anything about their relationship.

Mike's leisurely attitude on answering her query seems to clear off the misunderstandings.

'So he did not have any feelings towards me... Phew...'

Lucy smiled and she started to loosen up around Mike and continued thinking bout her dreams.

"I always imagined myself wearing a beautiful backless white gown, with a veil and a tiara on my head. Holding a fresh bouquet of Lillies, as I walked slowly, holding my dad's hand, down the aisle towards my groom. Suzy would be the ring barrier, as my groom and I stood on the altar reciting our oath as husband and wife." Lucy's eyes stared into nothingness as her face went dreamy.

She leaned her back on the chair and closed her eyes. Her lips curved a bit as she continued speaking. "I guess, that day would never come now. We only got two months to live inside this earth."

"What, feeling regret of not fulfilling your wishes already? It is not too late you know. There is a church less than 5km from the USGS office. We've got two more months, not like two hours... If you want, you still can walk down the aisle with someone you like."

Mike waved his hand to Lucy and he stood up to sit properly on the table. He smiled coyly at her. "There is one guy that is always with you in the bunker. What was his name? Ah, yes, it's Raymond. You guys are together right?"

"Raymond? No, we are not together. You have misunderstood our relationship. We are purely friends." Lucy straightens her back and she looked at Mike in disbelief.

Lucy frowned her face as she thinks.

'Is our relationship seems special to other's eyes? Me and Raymond? pfft.'

Lucy smiled and she shook her head left and right slowly. She relaxed her body and crossed her leg leisurely while she eyed Mike's reaction.

Mike squinted his eyes and he side glanced Lucy. "Really? I always thought you two are together..."

Pursing his lips, he provoked Lucy. "Well, if you want to make your wish came true within these two months, you have to make do with every resource you have."

"Are you suggesting me to get married to Raymond?" Lucy asked Mike with a smile, but her eyes showed the seriousness in her question.

Mike smiled "I suppose you can get married to him if you want to. Or, if you have another person in mind, then I say, go for it. "

'Or you can always choose me...'

Mike quickly brushed his thoughts away as he got down from the table. "I am not forcing you or anything, it's just if you feel that you are missing out by not getting married before the end of the world, I say... just get married then. How hard can it be?"

"..."

Mike turned his head and he faced Lucy. Sitting down on the sofa, Mike waited for Lucy's reply.

Lucy did not answer it. She seems to be stuck, pondering at Mike's words.

'Getting married during these 2 months seems not a bad idea. I get to experience a flash marriage!'

Lucy suddenly laughed at her wild thought.

Feeling like Mike was looking at her, Lucy glanced at him. Their eyes met, and Lucy smiled at him.

Mike quickly shifted his gaze and walked towards the end of the table. Picking up his laptop, he feels like the topic that they are talking about right now seems to affect his mood too.

'Crap, I am not married myself you know? What a bold move. Suggesting a teenager to get married to someone else, instead of getting married to me. I guess it would never happen in this lifetime.'

He sighed as he sat down the sofa with a laptop on his hand. Without thinking much, he quickly got into working mode.

Soon, the room went silent, and the only sound heard was the sound of clicking from Mike's keyboard.

Lucy took out her phone and dialed her father's number again.

The line was still not connected.

Feeling bored, Lucy propped her hand on her chin and she stared at Mike who is working seriously on the sofa.

'Straight Caucasian nose, small thin lips, deep-set of eyes... A sharp jawline, and a sexy pair of clavicle bones...' Lucy gulped her saliva loudly, and she coughed.

"Ehem..."

'Oh my god... since when have I become so perverted?!'

"What's wrong? Do you have a sore throat?" Mike spoke to Lucy without even lifting his face from his laptop.

"You can go and get your drink over there." Mike pointed his finger to the side of his office.

"No, it's okay. I am good... You look busy?"

Mike sighed and he pushed away his laptop from his lap. Pinching the bridge of his nose, Mike replied.

"Yeah, the buoy and the seismograph at most of the volcanic area seems to be malfunctioning. I have been forwarding emails to the contractors to have someone to repair it, but I don't know. No reply. I guess everyone is not in the mood to continue working now. None responded to my mails, and I have been searching for an independent technician to take over the repair job."

"Currently, we have lost contact with almost 300 buoys and there has been no data received from the seismograph for the past 2 days. A lot can happen in two days..."

"Oh. That's bad."

Lucy replied half-heartedly.

"I am worried if the two months' calculation went off somewhere, and I would like to calculate again using the latest data, but now, this issue happens..." Mike's face frowned with frustrations.

Mike slumped himself onto the sofa, hugging a cushion to his chest.

He closed his eyes as he tried to relax. He felt that it is useless to fuss over the issue any more. Without a complete data, he cannot do recalculation.

Closing his eyes, Mike started to drift off to sleep.
