Chapter 48: Breaking the news
Jane felt strange. Lucy just now asked her, what would she do if the world is going to an end in 2 months, and now there is some kind of announcement of selection?
'This could not be any more coincidence.'
'Lucy must have known something.'
Jane turned and looked at Lucy.
"Lucy, you tell me. Are all the things your sister told me just now... is all true? The world is ending soon?"
Lucy's face turned somber, and she nodded slowly at her mom.
"It is all true. What I just about to tell you just now... was about this. I, I just happened to overheard Mike's conversation with his colleague a few days ago." Lucy could feel that her mother was looking at her as if she has been betrayed, so she quickly adds on her speech.
"I didn't mean to keep it a secret from you... it is just that, I did not have any proof and, and I am afraid that you would not believe me, even if I told you the news. Mike has given me an interview, and I was processing it till late at night, so I was planning to tell you and dad this morning. But who knew the government would let out the news today. The selection, and all, is necessary for us to be sent out to space. Mike told me that this move is crucial, as then we are not going to survive in this world if all the volcanoes in the world erupted at once... It's true. that is all I know..." Lucy was talking ten to the dozen, as she was trying to prove herself that she is not hiding anything even from her family.
Jane sighed, and she slumped on the floor weakly. The news hits her hard.
'Why is it Seth is not here when I needed him the most?'
Suzy on her side did not move. She thought that the news she heard just now was detailed enough, but what Lucy told her is much more detailed than that.
"So.., if we all want to stay here on earth, then we are all going to die when all the volcanoes erupted? ...is it just the volcanoes?" feeling like volcano eruption as nothing, Suzy asked her sister.
Lucy shakes her head vigorously. "No, you don't understand. I have made some research on my own before this. If all the volcanoes going to erupt at once, then the whole world will experience some major earthquakes... we, we, might not even going to live to see the volcanic eruptions as we all might die during the massive earthquake. Even if we could live past the earthquakes and volcanoes, we could have died soon after that. There are more after-effects of volcanic eruptions. One of them is a tsunami. We will not have any idea on how big the tsunami might be, as most of the volcanoes in the world was a subsea volcanoes, known as submarine volcanoes. Once they have erupted, they will release tons and tons of ashes into the air. The air would be so polluted with ash and toxic gases... and all the crops and living things will die soon afterward, due to the lack of oxygen and sunlight. So, whatever we do on earth, we won't be able to stop it. The only way is to go to space. If we did not go to outer space, we will all die." Lucy explained to her sister slowly and carefully, so that they can get the bigger picture of this situation.
"What about if we stay underground? This bunker. Yeah, this bunker is tough enough right?" Jane asked Lucy.
Lucy pursed her lips, and shakes her head again. "Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that this bunker could withstand the earthquake. If, if the earthquake was super strong, the tectonic plate might have crushed us from within. Or, or... we might sink further inside the earth middle layer, if the soil turns to fluid-like consistency. How deep will we get buried, we will never know. When it happens, we will not have our way out. It will be similar to be buried alive." Lucy crouched down on the floor and hold up Jane's hand.
"So, mom, whatever we do next, just make sure we could be selected to go to outer space. If we did not get to be selected... we all might just perish altogether." Lucy tries to emphasize the importance of going to space with her family. She knew, that they are reluctant to leave earth and venture to the foreign place to the outer space.
Jane looked up to her daughters and smiled weakly. She then pats Lucy's head dotingly.
"Lucy, I might not be able to be selected to go to outer space with you. I am old, and I am not fit enough to make the travel. Traveling to outer space is not that easy. We are not just going to travel by it, but we need to live there as well. You and Suzy could make..."
Lucy slapped away her mother's hand and shouted, "NO! We are going together. I am not leaving without you! It is either we live, or die together! I don't want to have this talk anymore. You are going with me. WE all going to leave together..." Lucy stood up, and she walked out of her mother's room in haste.
Lucy was crying as she walks out of the door. She walks hastily into her room.
"Bamm!"
Lucy closed the door with a thud. She crouched on the door and cried.
She did not want her family to see her crying. She did not want to look weak in front of them. She wants to be the pillar of strength to her family, now that Mia is gone, she is the eldest daughter in the family now.
'Mia, if we all gone to space, you will follow us there don't you?'
Lucy sobbed for the longest time today. All the pent up frustration, the anguish, the worries, was all released today. She finally let it all out...
"Ding dong..."
Lucy was startled to hear the doorbell ringing. She tried to stand up, but she has been crouching for too long, and her legs gave way when she stands.
'Crashed!!'
"Awww!"
Lucy cried miserably. She has fallen, toppling down the shoe rack together with her.
The sound was lo<span style="font-size: 1.0625rem; letter-spacing: 0px;">ud enough to make the people outside to be worried.</span>
"Lucy, are you okay?"
'Bang, bang, bang!'
Someone was so worried that he banged on the door loudly.
