Chapter 45: A false alarm?

Lucy stared nervously at the sleeping Mike next to her. Her heart was thumping loudly in nervousness. She is not asking for much, just for someone to accompany her during this nerve-wracking moments.

The still glaring red lighting and the constant ringing of the alarm only amplify the nervousness in her.

'This is not helping ok! I have to talk to the people who managed this bunker to stop the red light from flashing. It just makes me more panic, and out of control!'

Lucy pressed up the call button again to speak to Mike. "Mike, please wake up! I promise I won't act bratty in front of you again... just, please, talk to me. I feel so alone..." Lucy's eyes, started to redden, and without her knowing, a teardrop fall silently down to her cheek.

Lucy has her head bowed down all this while when she was deeply engrossed in her thoughts. Her pitiful sobs were heard throughout the room.

She is really scared. what if the pod has failed, and they will be buried alive inside the bunker? And that also she is going to buried alive with someone who she dislikes?

Lucy has been overwhelmed with her wild thoughts, and she has been picturing all sorts of worst-case scenarios in her mind that she failed to notice one major flaw.

She has failed to realize that the ringing from the alarm was gone, and the red light has changed to the usual white light color.

Both the emergency alarm and there is no more red warning flashing light!

"Really? Will you stop being bratty from now on?"

Lucy answered the question without thinking. "Yes, I will! As long as you keep awake and be with me together... I pro..." Lucy was stunned. She quickly lifted her head, and she saw Mike has been looking at her from the outside of his pod. He is grinning evilly at her.

"You, you... How did you get out??" With an obvious tear-streaked face, Lucy questioned Mike. Her face was flushed red up to her ears.

"..." Mike did not answer her, but his grin turned to laughter.

Ignoring the man in front of her, Lucy wiped her face and lifted her head high.

'Evil! He laughed at me?! Huh, what's wrong with this pod? I am sure I have tried the eject button many times before, but the door did not open up at all! How did the devil get out so easily? Oh, wait, when did the alarm has stopped??'

Feeling like a fool, Lucy snapped from her monologue and pressed the eject button once again.

"Pursss.."

The hydraulic door of the Pod gives out a hissing sound before it opened up. Lucy walked out of the Pod with her shaking legs. She felt her legs have turned jelly and weak, and she did not have control over her own feet. She stumbled at her own feet as she walks out of the pod.

Looking at how pitiful Lucy looks, Mike extends out his hands and holds Lucy up before she makes a fool of herself more.

"..."

Lucy was stunned for a moment when Mike suddenly turned into such a gentleman for her.

The indifferent Mike that she always knew has extended his hand out to avoid her from falling!

He was about to ask her if she is alright, but feeling like he can't hold it in anymore, Mike let out a slight laughter, showing his white teeth out when he looks up at Lucy's face again.

"Look at you... How hard have you been crying huh? You, you better take a look at the mirror." Mike turned his body around and laughed silently again.

Lucy wiped her face harder this time, hoping to clear up the traces of tears. She completely forgot that she wore non-waterproof mascara and foundation.

Running out to the bathroom, Lucy saw her reflection in the mirror.

Her eyes opened up unbelievably wide, shocked at her reflection.

"Ahhh!!"

Running with both of her palm covering her face, Lucy quickly enter the bathroom door.

"Bamm!"

Lucy closed the door with a loud thud.

"HAHAHAHA! Oh my god. Silly girl... " Mike laughed out loudly not restraining himself anymore once he heard Lucy slammed the door.

Mike shakes his head left and right after he has calmed down.

"Right, Albert should know what has happened just now..." Taking out his cellphone, Mike called Albert to find out the situation.

Albert told him that it is normal for the emergency alarm to be activated when the bunker experienced an earthquake that is more than magnitude 8, but it would not eject the people out unless the bunker structure started to show any signs of damage.

"I see... so, just now it was more or less like a drill for us? Well, glad that it was only a false alarm. If it is real, we are not prepared for it." Mike sighed and felt relief washed over him. He is glad that nothing happened.

Hanging up the phone, Mike leaned on the sofa and closed his tired eyes.

"I feel like I am forgetting something again..." Mike rubbed his temple with his thumb and index finger and gave his best to remember again.

Mike stopped his movement and sits up straight.

"Right, that silly girl is still in the bathroom." Mike quickly got up and walked to the bathroom.

"Lucy, are you okay? You have been inside for more than 30 minutes now..." Mike asked worriedly, he has forgotten totally, about the incidence of him laughing loudly at the poor girl pitiful state just now.

"...I am fine." Lucy's voice was so low, that Mike had to lean on the door to hear her words.

"Are you sure? If you are okay, can you come out now?" Lucy's faint voice raised the alarm in Mike.

Lucy has never talked down to him before. This is the first!

After a minute of silence, the door to the bathroom opened slightly.

Lucy walked out of the bathroom with a bare face, free from makeup.

Mike was stunned looking at the pale yellowish face of Lucy. He knew that Lucy is mixed blood, but she never showed her bare face before. She always wore makeup, trying to look older than her looks. Lucy right now, however, looks quite adorable with a slight childish face, but yet still looks mature enough.

Mike smiled at Lucy. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," Lucy said it slowly and sits down on the sofa.

The atmosphere in the room suddenly went solemn with both of them not speaking.

Feeling like the room is too quiet, Mike decided to speak first. "So, I have called Albert, and he said just now it is nothing to worry about. The emergency alarm will trigger once it sensed a magnitude 8 and above of quakes, and it will not eject the people out unless the bunker is going to crumble." Glancing at Lucy next to him, whos face remains unchanged, Mike continued his speech again.

"So the pod has not malfunctioned, nor are we going to die here. " Mike spoke the words softly at Lucy. He knew that Lucy was afraid just now, and probably still shaken up from the incident.

Moving his body closer to Lucy in hesitation. He extended his hands out and patted Lucy's shoulder.

"With me around, nothing will happen to us..."
