Chapter 44: Emergency
Mike was still rummaging the documents on the dining table, trying hard to remember what was his purpose for coming back to his room.
"Urgh, am I that old already? I can't even remember what I came back for... Damn, and they said men's life starts at 40? Pfft. At 41 years old, I already started to forget things." Shaking his head in disbelief, Mike stops his aimless searching and decided to relax for a bit.
Taking out a bottle of chilled mineral water, Mike gulped down the water in less than a minute like he has been thirsty his whole life.
After downing the whole bottle of mineral water, Mike was feeling relief and refreshed. Feeling that his condition is getting better, Mike tries to recall his purpose of coming to his suite again, but to no avail.
Feeling angry and disappointed at himself for forgetting things, Mike sighed and slumped his body on the comfortable and huge sofa. He closed his eyes and drew a long breath.
'Probably I am too tired these days and lack of sleep can cause my mental health, and memory to decline too. Yeah, I need sleep.'
Mike tried not to think of the recent events that have been bugging his consciousness lately and try to relax his mind so that he can fall asleep.
Not even 5 minutes after he dozed off, the bell to his suite started to ring incessantly.
Frowning at the sudden sound of interruption, Mike blinked his eyes open and dash towards the door.
'Damn, I have just asleep!'
"Coming, coming! Stop ringing the bells please!" Mike shouted from inside the house, while his hand stretched out to open the door. He had forgotten to check on the intercom camera before opening up the door.
If he takes his time to check who has been ringing his bell before, he wouldn't dare to open his door abruptly like this.
"It's you! Why are you here again, young lady?" Mike barked at Lucy.
"What young lady? I have a name, and it is Lucy for your information. We are not someone from some medieval era, okay?" Crossing her hands together, seemingly annoyed at Mike, to keep calling her young lady, Lucy stood straight in front of Mike's door, showing her arrogance.
Rubbing his temple while gritting his teeth, Mike asked Lucy in an annoyed tone. "Right, right... So, Lucy, what are you doing coming back here again? Don't you have anything better to do, other than bugging my peace?"
With the same protective posture of crossing her hand together, Lucy blinked her eyes a few times, thinking.
"Right, good question. I forgot to ask you the main important question. About the volcanoes in Alaska, you said that is going to erupt soon, but, how soon, is your soon?" Lucy uncrossed her hands and stares at Mike.
Feeling his chest getting tighter at the sudden anger, Mike languidly answered Lucy's question, "I don't know. "
"Hey, come on... be serious. I am asking one serious question now. " Lucy's voice tuned an octave higher than usual when she heard Mike's simple and stupid answer.
Leaning his body on the door frame, Mike did not even bother to even look at Lucy, before he answered, <span style="font-size: 1.0625rem; letter-spacing: 0px;">"I am serious. Do I look like I am lying to you?" </span>

"..." <span style="font-size: 1.0625rem; letter-spacing: 0px;">Lucy was speechless. Lifting her finger, and pointing it at Mike rudely, Lucy started to lose her cool. </span>

<span style="font-size: 1.0625rem; letter-spacing: 0px;">Before she could even utter a word to Mike, Mike cut off her words with his question.</span>
"Did you know how many hours I have spent on doing calculations to predict the exact time and date for the volcanoes to erupt? Or, did you know how many hours I have slept this past few days?" Feeling annoyed, Mike opened up his eyes, and he gritted his teeth, showing up his prominent jaw clearly to Lucy.
"Although, I have almost 2 hours of sleep, every day for the past 5 days, but still I cannot identify the exact time and date, on when will the disasters strike. Now, would you excuse me? You have taken up quite a few minutes of my sleeping time."
Mike has just finished up speaking to Lucy when suddenly an alarm was blaring throughout the bunker.
The corridor light was blinking in red color and the ground started to feel shaky. Then an announcement was heard.
"Emergency, emergency, emergency! Every patrons, please, take your seat in the emergency pod! An earthquake, of magnitude 8.7, has been detected. Emergency, emergency, emergency!" The announcement was repeated a few times before the startled Mike and Lucy looks at each other.
Dragging Lucy's hand forcefully inside his suite, He closed the door and proceed to the emergency pod without any other words.
Lucy quickly follows suit and enters the other emergency pod next to Mike.
The pods suddenly turned alive and the machine starts.
They both stayed inside the pod until all the shaking subsided, but the pod did not eject themselves out like they thought it would!
'What is happening, is the pod malfunctioning?'
Lucy gulped her saliva in nervousness, and she gazed at the emotionless Mike next to her.
"Aren't you nervous at all? We are inside the pod, but it did not eject us out as planned." Lucy asked the question quickly.
"Hah, now you sounded like a 20-year-old lady." Smirking at her, Mike closed his eyes again.
It is not that he did it because he wanted to irritate her, but he simply felt tired, coupling with his pounding head, he only felt worse. Sitting still like this is simply too relaxing for him not to fall asleep.
"You are sleeping?! God, how could you sleep at a time like this...Urgh!!"
"..." Mike did not even show even a slight annoyance when Lucy criticize him.
Looking at the unmoving man next to her, Lucy yelled, "FINE!!"
Lucy is pissed. So pissed that she was thinking to dash out of her pod, and pounce on the sleeping man next to her.
She is scared, she is alone with a man that she has her prejudice on, and during this disaster, they are stuck together, but the man simply ignored her!
'Despicable!'
'Heartless!'
'Inhuman...'
Lucy cursed Mike in her heart with every thought that she could think, but Mike still sleeping soundlessly<span style="font-size: 1.0625rem; letter-spacing: 0px;">. </span>

"Mike... are you going to keep sleeping and ignores me? I am scared... " Lucy whined, trying to gain pity from Mike.
