Chapter 40: The discussion 3

The heated discussion among the leader was continued in the Senate room, with a more proactive response from the other experts that the leaders brought along.

At first, the NASA team thought that their decision on using Pods will be rebuked harshly by the experts from other countries. Surprisingly, once the experts compare their data and plans, they agreed wholeheartedly to transport the people to outer space as soon as possible.

With the agreement from the majority of the experts present, Dubois proceed to explain further on the pods design. They only got 2 months to modify the design, and they have to ensure that all the pods would have a fail-safe device connected to it.

They did not want their painstaking effort to send out the people to space failed miserably. This is the only plan they have, that have more than 50% of success to continue the survival of humanity, even though they have to continue living in space.

There are times when the launching of rockets to space met with disaster, and some of it also killed the astronauts. Those who got killed where highly trained astronauts, whereas this time they can only send out the people who will only have limited knowledge about space.

The people that they are going to deploy need to be chosen as soon as possible so that training could be conducted earlier, and hence making their chance of surviving in space become higher.

--------------

"Alright, we have concluded the criteria of the lucky people that will be chosen to be sent out to space. They are to be around 40 civilians, with 10 people are crews. I know, that we did not have enough Captain and pilot, that are able to bring them safely out of earth's atmosphere.

Therefore, we have decided that each one of experienced captain we have will have to link their coordinate once they are in space, and we will autopilot them from the earth and if anything happens, the captain that has already arrived, will link the pods together once they are in space.

After all of the pods, have safely arrived on the designated orbit, the pods with experienced Captain and crew, will have to link the space pods together, to form a web-like structure... or it could also be seen like a honeycomb structure. If the plan is successful, with the cooperation with all the geniuses around the world, the structure would be impenetrable and foolproof."

As Dubois speaks, his hands keep on tapping on the laptop to change the slides. Pausing his speech to look at the audience, he passed around a piece of paper with the plan of the pods once it is linked.

"We will be transporting the Pods with the facilities and equipment first, then lastly would be the civilians. So far, we have identified several essential facilities the civilians needed to live as comfortable as possible in space.

To reduce the discomfort, each of them will have their own cubicle and space to sleep. The sleeping tube would act as an emergency capsule in case any emergency arises; a breach in the pods due to asteroids, damages caused by the solar storm, or system malfunctioning that is beyond repair and they have to abandon their pods."

Dubois then explained the details of the 2 in 1 tube of every passenger of the pods.

To bring as many people as possible to space, the team has decided to cut down the living space and to stack up the tubes like a cabinet. Each pod will have at least 10 civilians, with 2 crews acting as the warden.

For safety purposes, they are not allowed to wander in space, and their spacesuits will be confiscated once they reside in their tube. Each of the sleeping tubes will be linked with an oxygen tank that can last for a maximum of 24 hours, as an emergency tank.

If any unfortunate event arises, and the pods damaged beyond repairs, the tubes will be ejected out to space, and the GPS will be activated to link the tube to the nearest pods for docking, in case of any emergency.

This way, any issue regarding living quarters will be solved even if their pods were damaged and unusable.

The only downside with this plan is, the oxygen level to the secondary pods will be reduced with the addition of passengers on board.

The only way they can sustain is to ensure the number of pods they have remains the same as the pods were equipped with enough oxygen for years to come.

Loosing one Pod, will reduce 3 months of their oxygen supply.

If more Pods were damaged and the oxygen tanks could not be salvaged, then, their time in space has to be shortened as well.

Once all the oxygen has been used up, they cannot stay in space anymore, and have to travel back to earth to continue living; the only oxygen supply they have...

The audience nodded their head in understanding. If all the experts that they have brought along have no say in the design of the pods, then they as the one who has no knowledge whatsoever in engineering and space travel.

With the plan in hand, the leaders decided to select their people according to the criteria listed by NASA and also add on a criteria of their own...

----------------

Dubois head back to his office with a rekindled spirit.

"Finally we can proceed with the plans, Jeff. But, I have a question. For those who are not qualified to make the space travel, do we just left them here? What will happen to them?
